  • Direct irradiation of 1Z,3E-1-cyano-1,4-diphenylbutadiene (2) and 1Z,3E-1-cyano-3-methyl-1,4-diphenylbutadiene (3) in organic solvents viz. n-hexane, methanol and acetonitrile results in preferential isomerization of the double bond substituted with cyano group via one-photon-one-bond isomerization process. The quantum efficiency of the isomerization of 3 is more than 2 in all the three solvents. Photoproducts of 2 and 3 (viz. 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b) also exhibited similar photoisomerization trends. The results are discussed in terms of the effects of substituents on the potential energy surface of the excited singlet states of $\alpha$,$\omega$-diphenylpolyenes, and the role of zwitterionic dipolar species in the photoisomerization process of linearly conjugated C=C polyenes is highlighted.

  • Ion-conducting polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) have recently used in developing fuel cell or solar cell for portable, mobile and residential applications [1]. Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC), alkaline electrolyte fuel cell (AFC) and dye-sensitized solar cell have been employing the ion-conducting PEMs to complete their electrical circuits to produce electricity.(omitted)

  • Four fatty acid vinyl esters were synthesized by transesterification between vinyl acetate and lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, respectively. Fatty acid vinyl ester oligomers were prepared from polymerization of four fatty acid vinyl esters in the presence of potassium persulfate in methanol. The ${\alpha}-sulfonation$ of these four fatty acid vinyl ester oligomer were carried by direct addition of sulfur trioxide. Especially, molecular weights of sodium ${\alpha}-sulfo$ fatty acid vinyl ester oligomers were measured by boiling point method.

  • Formic acid or formate is a common industrial compound used in the production of ensilage, disinfectants, decalcifying agents and mainly as a precursor in industrial chemical synthesis. It is also a well-known toxic metabolite produced in methanol poisoning. Thus, formate is a potential source of both accidental and deliberate poisoning. Very few reports have been published thus far, on the toxicology of direct formic acid poisoning. Here, we report a case of a 74-year-old man without a history of depression, who ingested about 30 gm of formic acid. The patient presented with profound high anion gap metabolic acidosis, acute renal failure and esophageal stricture. The patient was successfully treated with hemodialysis and supportive measures. But permanent esophageal stricture was complicated by formic acid burns in the gastrointestinal tract. We discuss the pathophysiology and treatment of this case.

  • Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) have found a wide variety of commercial applications such as portable computer and mobile phone. In a fuel cell, the catalysts have an important role and durability and efficiency are determined by the ability of the catalyst. The activity of the catalyst is determined by the structure and shape control of the nanoparticles and the dispersion of the nanoparticles and application system. The surface energy of nanoparticles determines the activity by shape control and the nanostructure is determined by the ratio of bi- and tri-metals in the alloy and core-shell. The dispersion of nanoparticles depends on the type of support such as carbon, graphen and metal oxide. In addition, a hybrid system using both optical and electrochemical device has been developed recently.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects on the mutagenicity and activity of DNA topoisomerase I of Sarcodon aspratus. Using an Ames mutagenicity test, which has been used to assess both mutagenic and antimutagenic effects of various molecules, it was observed that the methanol extracted fraction and other fractions (prepared in water or ethylacetate) of Sarcodon aspratus showed a significant antimutagenic activity against a mutagenecity induced by both a direct mutagenic agent such as MNNG and an indirect mutagenic agents such as B(a)P and AFB$_1$in Salmonella typhimurium TA98, TA100. Also, the extract and fractions of Sarcodon aspratus were found to have an inhibitory activity on the relaxation process of DNA topoisomerase I.

  • A sensitive and specific method is described for the determination of midazolam in human plasma. The drug was extracted from 1 mL of carbonate buffered plasma (pH 9.6) with 8 mL of diethyl ether. Famprofazone was used as internal standard. The organic phase was evaporated to dryness. The residue was dissolved in methanol for the direct analysis by gas chromatograph-nitrogen phosphorus detector system. In the concentration range of 1-5000 ng/mL, the calibration curve was linear. The coefficients of variation from the precision test were <6% at the range of the concentration of 0.10-2.00 μg/mL and the detection limit for midazolam in 1 mL of plasma was o.5 ng. This assay is more sensitive, selective, simple and rapid than earlier methods. Plasma midazolam concentrations were determined by this method after administration of midazolam.
