In this study, we visualized the internal flow of a regenerative turbomachinery using the direct injection tracer method. For visualization, the working fluid was water and the tracer was oil colors (marbling colors). Droplets were injected at the inlet of the machinery and the streak were recorded using a high-speed camera with high-power light sources. While circulating inside the groove, the droplets were translated by the rotational motion of the impeller. When the droplets flow out of the impeller groove, relative to the impeller, they moved more slowly. And the droplets repeatedly reentered into the groove and circulated again. Then the droplets either flowed to the outlet or to the stripper. As a result, this experiment has confirmed the internal circulating flow of a regenerative turbomachinery.

In this study, a numerical analysis was performed to confirm the formation of supersonic flow and the stabilization time satisfying the design condition in a Direct-connect supersonic combustor. The process was examined in which the high-pressure gas of vitiation air heater propagates downstream to the supersonic combustor and forms a supersonic flow field. It was confirmed through the analysis of pressure and temperature that the supersonic flow field satisfies the design points of Mach number 2.0 and 1,000 K, and requires a minimum of 4.0 ms for stabilization. These results indicate that the time required for the supersonic flow field stabilization should be taken into account when testing for the supersonic combustion experiment.
Horizontal-Flow Roughing Filtration (HRF) is one of altemative pretreatment methods e.g. prior to Slow Sand Filtration (SSF). However, some of its limitations are that the effluent quality drops drastically at higher turbidity (>200 NTU) and at higher filtration rate (>1 m/h). To overcome these drawbacks, we suggested Direct Horizontal-Flow Roughing Filtration (DHRF), which is a modified system of Horizontal-Flow Roughing (HRF) by addition of low dose of coagulant prior to filtration. In this study to optimize the DHRF configuration, a conceptual and mathematical model for the coarse compartment has been developed in analogy with multi-plate settlers. Data from simple column settling test can be used in the model to predict the filter performance. Furthermore, the model developed herein has been validated by successive experiments carried out. The conventional column settling test has been found to be an handy and useful to predict the performance of DHRF for different raw water characteristics (e.g. coagulated or uncoagulated water, different presence of organic matter, etc.) and different inital process conditions (e.g. coagulant dose, mixing time and intensity, etc.). An optimum filter design for the coarse compartment (grain size 20mm) has been found to be of 3 m/h filtration rate with filter length of 4-4.5 m.

In order to assess hydrologic and nonpoint source pollutant behaviors in a watershed with Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model, the accuracy evaluation of SWAT model should be conducted prior to the application of it to a watershed. When calibrating and validating hydrological components of SWAT model, the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (EI) has been widely used. However, the EI value has been known as it is affected sensitively by big numbers among the range of numbers. In this study, a Web-based flow clustering EI estimation system using K-means clustering algorithm was developed and used for SWAT hydrology evaluation. Even though the EI of total streamflow was high, the EI values of hydrologic components (i.e., direct runoff and baseflow) were not high. Also when the EI values of flow group I and II (i.e., low and high value group) clustered from direct runoff and baseflow were computed, respectively, the EI values of them were much lower with negative EI values for some flow group comparison. The SWAT auto-calibration tool estimated values also showed negative EI values for most flow group I and II of direct runoff and baseflow although EI value of total streamflow was high. The result obtained in this study indicates that the SWAT hydrology component should be calibrated until all four positive EI values for each flow group of direct runoff and baseflow are obtained for better accuracy both in direct runoff and baseflow.
The present study investigates turbulent flows subject to strong wall injection in a channel through a Direct Numerical Simulation technique. These flows are pertinent to internal flows inside the hybrid rocket motors. A simplified model problem where a regression process at the wall is idealized by the wall blowing has been studied to gain a better understanding of how the near-wall turbulent structures are modified. As the strength of wall blowing increases, the turbulence intensities and Reynolds shear stress increase rapidly and this is thought to result from the shear instability induced by the injected flows at the wall. Also, turbulent viscosity grows rapidly as the flow moves downstream. Thus, the effect of wall-blowing modifies the state of turbulence significantly and more sophisticated turbulence modeling would be required to predict this type of flows accurately.

A direct contact heat exchanger using particle-suspended gas as a heat transfer medium is analyzed with an extended emphasis on the radiation, i. e., considering the radiation by both gas and particles. While the Runge-Kutta method is used for a numerical analysis of the momentum and energy equations, the finite volume method is utilized to solve the radiative transfer equation. Present study shows a notable effect by the gas radiation in addition to the particle radiation, especially when changing the chamber length as well as the gas and particle mass flow rate. When the gas and particle mass flow rate is raised, the gas temperature in the particle heater still increases as the gas absorption coefficient increases, which is different from the results for the small scale heat exchanger.
A cycle simulation program is developed and its predictions are compared with the test bed measurements of a direct injection (DI) diesel engine. It is based on the mass and energy conservation equations with phenomenological models for diesel combustion. Two modeling approaches for combustion have been tested; a multi-zone model by Hiroyasu et al (1976) and the other one coupled with an in-cylinder flow model. The results of the two combustion models are compared with the measured imep, pressure trace and NOx and soot emissions over a range of the engine loads and speeds. A parametric study is performed for the fuel injection timing and pressure, the swirl ratio, and the squish area. The calculation results agree with the measured data, and with intuitive understanding of the general operating characteristics of a DI diesel engine.

Laminar two-dimensional time-dependent flow past a circular cylinder is numerically investigated using direct numerical simulation for the low Reynolds number (Re=164∼280). The higher-order finite difference scheme is employed for the spatial distributions along with the second order Adams-Bashforth and the first order backward-Euler time integration. The convection term is applied by the 7th order up wind scheme and the pressure and viscosity terms are applied by the 4th order central difference. The grid system makes use of the regular grid system and it is generated by an equation. The calculated results of drag coefficients, lift coefficients, pressure distributions, and vorticity contours and other information are compared with experimental and numerical ones. These results obtained by the present DNS show good agreement with the previous studies.
This paper discusses several low-temperature heat-tranfer fluids, including water-based inorganic salt, organic salt, alcohol/glycol mixtures, silicones, and halogenated hydrocarbons in order to choose the best heat-transfer fluid for the newly designed direct contact refrigeration system. So, it contains a survey on commercial products such as propylene glycol and potassium formate as newly used in super market and food processing refrigeration. The stability of commercial fluids at the working temperature of $-20^{\circ}C$ was monitored as a function of time up to two months. And organic and inorganic compositions of candidate fluids were obtained by analytical instruments such as ES, XRF, AAS, ICP-AES, GC, and GC-MS. Analysis results indicate that commercial propylene glycol is very efficient and safe heat transfer fluids for the direct cooling system with liquid phase.
This study investigates the performance of 2.0L hybrid vehicles equipped with Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) fuel engines, using energy flow analysis. By incorporating a direct LPG injection system (LPDi), the research aims to overcome the reduced maximum output commonly associated with LPG engines. Moreover, the integration of a hybrid system is explored as a means to enhance vehicle fuel economy while reducing CO2 and emissions. The study employs data from FTP-75 and HWFET driving cycle to inform future research efforts focused on predicting CO2 emissions and fuel economy for Hybrid Electric Vehicles utilizing LPG Direct Injection. The findings offer insights into optimizing fuel systems for better environmental and operational performance in hybrid vehicles.
