  • The recent progress in the new cooling technology for superconducting systems without liquid cryogens is briefly presented. In these conduction-cooled systems, the super-conducting magnets are cooled by a direct contact with closed-cycle cryocoolers and only electricity is supplied to maintain the cryogenic temperatures. It is reported that at least 20 conduction-cooled (low Tc or high Tc) super- conducting systems have been constructed, tested, or commercially used worldwide. Some of the significant design issues are discussed in comparison with the conventional liquid-helium cooled systems.

  • Analysis of heat loss is needed to achieve the high performance and high efficiency in hydrogen engine. So, cooling losses at each part of the direct injection hydrogen fueled engine were measured to evaluate the behavior and distribution of heat loss. Unsteady instantaneous temperature and heat flux at cylinder head were measured by use of instantaneous temperature prove. And these results were compared with those of gasoline engine.

  • This study is focused on the development and selection of optimal cool tube system to maximize its thermal performance. Cool tube is devised to reduce the heating and cooling load of building by preheating or refreshing of intake air. Finite volume method was adopted to solve the conduction problem between the cool tube and earth. We examine the cool tube system for two operating periods, a short term(12 hours) and a long term(3 months). The results of short term operations reveal that condensation significantly influences and raises the exit air temperature. For long term operations, optimum conditions of cool tube system are obtained with variations of flow-rate, depth, length and diameter of cool tube.

  • This paper presents optimal placement of minimal set of phasor measurement units(PMU's) and observability of measurement system with PMU. By using the incidence matrix symbolic method which directly assigns measurement and pseudo-measurement to incidence matrix, it is much simpler and easier to analyze observability. The optimal PMU set is found through the simulated-annealing(SA) and the direct combinational method. The cooling schedule parameter which is suitable to the property of problem to solve is specified and optimal placement is proven by presented direct combinational method. Search spaces are limited within reasonable feasible solution region to reduce a unnecessary one in the SA implementation based on global search. The proposed method presents to save CPU time and estimate state vectors based on optimal PMU set.

  • A zero-dimensional direct simulation Monte Carlo(DSMC) model is developed for simulating diatomic gas including vibrational kinetics. The method is applied to the simulation of two systems: vibrational relaxation of a simple harmonic oscillator and translational-rotational-vibrational energy exchange process under heating and cooling. In the present DSMC method, the variable hard sphere molecular model and no time counter technique are used to simulate the molecular collision kinetics. For simulation of diatomic gas flows, the Borgnakke-Larsen phenomenological model is adopted to redistribute the translational and internal energies.

  • This paper deals with a water-cooled direct drive permanent magnet (DD-PM) motor design for an injection-molding application. In order to meet the requirements for the target application and consider the practical problems of the manufacturing industry, the DD-PM motor is designed in consideration of efficiency and structural strength with many constraints. The performances of the designed motor are estimated not only by magnetic field analysis, but also by thermal and structural analysis. The design and analysis results are presented with experiment results.

  • This study is focused on the development and selection of the optimal cool tube system to maximize its thermal performance. Cool tube is devised to reduce the heating and cooling load of building by preheating or refreshing of intake air with buried pipes. Finite volume method is adopted to solve the conduction problem between the cool tube and earth. We examine the cool tube system for two operating periods, a short term(12 hours) and a long term(3 months). • The straight-cone steel cooling tower is a novel type of structure, which has a distinct aerodynamic distribution on the internal surface of the tower cylinder compared with conventional hyperbolic concrete cooling towers. Especially in the extreme weather conditions of strong wind and heavy rain, heavy rain also has a direct impact on aerodynamic force on the internal surface and changes the turbulence effect of pulsating wind, but existing studies mainly focus on the impact effect brought by wind-driven rain to structure surface. In addition, for the indirect air cooled cooling tower, different additional ventilation rate of shutters produces a considerable interference to air movement inside the tower and also to the action mechanism of loads. To solve the problem, a straight-cone steel cooling towerstanding 189 m high and currently being constructed is taken as the research object in this study. The algorithm for two-way coupling between wind and rain is adopted. Simulation of wind field and raindrops is performed with continuous phase and discrete phase models, respectively, under the general principles of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Firstly, the rule of influence of 9 combinations of wind sped and rainfall intensity on flow field mechanism, the volume of wind-driven rain, additional action force of raindrops and equivalent internal pressure coefficient of the tower cylinder is analyzed. On this basis, the internal pressures of the cooling tower under the most unfavorable working condition are compared between four ventilation rates of shutters (0%, 15%, 30% and 100%). The results show that the 3D effect of equivalent internal pressure coefficient is the most significant when considering two-way coupling between wind and rain. Additional load imposed by raindrops on the internal surface of the tower accounts for an extremely small proportion of total wind load, the maximum being only 0.245%. This occurs under the combination of 20 m/s wind velocity and 200 mm/h rainfall intensity. Ventilation rate of shutters not only changes the air movement inside the tower, but also affects the accumulated amount and distribution of raindrops on the internal surface.

  • As one of the advanced design features of the Korea next generation reactor, direct vessel injection (DVI) system is being considered instead of conventional cold leg injection (CLl) system. It is known that the DVI system greatly enhances the reliability of the emergency core cooling (ECC) system. However, there is still a dispute on its performance in terms of water delivery to the reactor core during the reflood period of a large-break loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA). Thus, experimental validation is under progress. In this paper, a new scaling method, using time and velocity reduced linear scaling law, is suggested for the design of a scaled-down experimental facility to investigate the direct ECC bypass phenomena in PWR downcomer.
