SCS method was applied to make the assessments of direct runoff according to land use changes in Jeju island. Land uses were obtained from 5 year-period remote sensing time series data from 1975 to 2000 which are provided by Water Management Information System (WAMIS). Hydrologic soil groups were categorized based on soil series of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), and permeable geologic structures such as Sumgol, Gotzawal and so on. The land uses of Jeju island are obviously characterized by urban-agricultural areas increases, and forest areas decrease. According to land use changes, curve number (CN) for Jeju island was consistently increased from 65.3 in 1975 to 69.6 in 2000. From 1975 to 2000, the amount of direct runoff and ratios increased due to CN changes. When the rainfall data in 1995 was applied to each year, the direct runoff amounts were $299.0{\sim}351.6\;mm$, and runoff ratios were $15.1{\sim}17.7%$. In the case of the application of the rainfall data in 2000, the direct runoff amounts were $136.9{\sim}161.5\;mm$, and runoff ratios were $9.7{\sim}11.5%$. Since direct runoff can be closely related to groundwater recharge and sustainable groundwater yield, the groundwater influence caused by land use changes or district exploitations should be considered for the reasonable water management and development in Jeju island.

The hydrologic model FESHM was introduced and its applicability was investigated in an attempt to analyze the rainfall-runoff relationships of urban small watersheds and to hereafter predict the envi-ronmental changes. Basic data on rainfall, water level, geomorphological characterisitics and land use were obtained from Yeonwha stream watershed located in Chonju-si Dukjin-dong. WL-5 for simulation o subshed WS# 1(136.7 ha) with urban district and WL-1 for total watershed WS#5 (278.78 ha) we'e selected as gaging points. The main results gained through applications were summarized as follows. 1. Direct runoff ratio caalculated from a simple separation method for WS#5 WS# 1 was 2O~39%, 38~62%, respectively. 2. Simulations for the runoff estimation were carried out for each watershed using 5 rainfall events, the simulation errors had the range of 2~ 30%, O~ 63% and O 120 minutes for the runoff volume, peak flow and peak time, respectively. 3. The effect of landuse change by urbanization was tested to WS# 1, runoff volume before development was estimated as from tenth to twentieth against after development.
This study examines the possible problem in the rainfall-runoff analysis process using the VIC (Variable Infiltration Capacity) model caused by using the effective soil depth instead of the soil depth. The parameters of the model are determined as follows. First, parameters that can be determined using available numerical information are fixed. For parameters related to direct runoff and base runoff, the recommended values of the VIC model are applied. In the case of soil depth, four cases are considered: (1) the effective soil depth is applied as the soil depth, (2) 1.5 times of the effective soil depth is applied as the soil depth by reflecting the vertical structure of the soil layer, (3) 1.25 times of the effective soil depth, and (4) 2.0 times of the effective soil depth as alternative soil depths. This study simulates the rainfall-runoff for the period from 1983 to 2020 targeting the Chungju Dam and Soyang River Dam basins of the Han River system. As a result of the study, it is confirmed that when the effective soil depth is applied instead of the soil depth, direct runoff and baseflow have opposite effects, and direct runoff increases by more than 3% while base runoff decreases by the same scale. In addition, the most influential factor in the estimation of the effective soil depth in the Chungju Dam and Soyanggang Dam basins is found to be the proportion of rock outcrop area. The difference between the direct runoff ratio and the base runoff ratio in the two basins is conformed significantly different due to the influence of the rock outcrop area.

The direct-runoff of South Korea's representative dams (Soyanggang, Chungju, Andong, Daecheong, and Seomjingang) and precipitation were analyzed mainly with the evenly distributed spring rainfall events across the country for the last five years. For precipitation, an increasing was presented during the period 2008-2011, but did not continue to increasing 2012. The average precipitation of the five dams displayed a similar trend. Except for Chungju and Andong Dams, the trend of runoff was similar to the one shown in the precipitation. Despite the precipitation of 2009 increased, the runoff volume decreased for Andong and Chungju Dams. In addition, Chungju Dam remarkably showed a bigger runoff volume compared to other dams. As for the Sumjingang Dam, the runoff volume was the smallest, and the difference is as great as over 15-fold when compared to other runoff values. After the result of analyzing the relation between a single runoff event and synoptic weather patterns, pattern 4 contributed to the greatest impact on this event and weather patterns. The total runoff volume of the five dams for spring rain event for the last five years that exhibited this characteristic was estimated at 5.68 billion tons($10^6m^3$). Lastly, the value of this estimation was assessed as approximately 273.1 billion KRW.

The NRCS-CN method is generally applied for estimating effective rainfalls in practice, in which the basin-averaged CN is normally used. In order to develop a more appropriate method for estimating effective rainfalls in a basin, this study compared estimated effective rainfalls from two distinct methods with the observed direct runoff. The first method is to estimate the basin-representative effective rainfall using the basin-averaged CN (hereafter, effective rainfall I), whereas the second method to estimate the basin-averaged effective rainfall through areal-averaging sub-area effective rainfalls corresponding to the soil type and landuse type (hereafter, effective rainfall II). The overall results indicated that the effective rainfall II was higher than the effective rainfall I and closer to the observed direct runoff. The study also performed error analyses to verify that the effective rainfall II can be applied in practice in a basin as more accurate estimate of basin-representative effective rainfall.

Geographic Information System (GIS) has advantage of analyzing spatial distributed data and handling spatial data for hydrologic analysis. Hydrologic Engineering Center's Hydrologic Modeling System(HEC-HMS) with HEC-GeoHMS was used to analyze flood runoff at agricultural small watershed. HEC-GeoHMS, which is an ArcView GIS extension designed to process geospatial data for HEC-HMS, is a useful tool for storing, managing, analyzing, and displaying spatially distributed data. Hydroligical component including peak discharge, time to peak, direct runoff, baseflow for Balhan study watershed, which is located in Whasung city, Kyunggi province, having an area of $29.79km^2$, were calculated using the HEC-HMS model with HEC-GeoHMS.
The purpose of this study is to estimate the flood hydrograph and runoff at ungaged small watershed by using interactive program with geomorphologic and climatic data obtained from the topographic maps following the law of stream classification and ordering by Horton and Strahler. The present model is modified from Allam's interactive program which derives the geomorphologic instantaneous unit hydrograph(GIUH). This program uses the results of Laplace transformation and convolution integral of probability density function in travel time at each station, This program is used to estimate the time to peak, the flood discharge and the direct runoff at San seong station in Bocheong Stream.

Estimation of groundwater recharge is one of the most critical issues in sustainable management of groundwater resources. This study estimated groundwater recharge in the Junggwae-Boeun area in Ulsan City, by using the water balance and hydrogeological characteristics of geology and soil. Evapotranspiration was computed by using the Thornthwaite method, and direct runoff was determined by using the SCS-CN technique. Groundwater recharge was obtained as 266 mm/a (20.6% of the average annual precipitation, 1296 mm/a), with 779 mm/a (60.1%) of evapotranspiration and 119 mm/a (9.2%) of direct runoff. Precipitation and groundwater recharge was highly correlated, comparing with the relationships between precipitation and evapotranspiration, and between precipitation and direct runoff. This fact indicates that groundwater recharge responds more sensitively to precipitation than evapotranspiration and direct runoff do.
Urbanization from agricultural/forest areas has been causing increased runoff and pollutant loads from it. Thus, numerous models have been developed to estimate NPS loading from urban area and Long-Term Hydrologic Impact Analysis (L-THIA) model has been used to evaluate effects of landuse changes on runoff and pollutant loads. However, the L-THIA model could not consider rainfall intensity in runoff evaluation. Therefore, the L-THIA model, capable of simulating runoff using 10-minute rainfall data, was applied to the study areas for evaluation of estimated runoff and NPS. The estimated Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (NSE) values were over 0.6 for runoff, BOD, TN, and TP for most sites and watershed. The calibrated model was further extended to other counties for pollutant load potential evaluation. Pollutant load potential maps were developed and target areas were identified. As shown in this study, the L-THIA 2012 can be used for evaluation runoff and pollutant loads with limited data sets and its estimation could be used in identifying pollutant load hot spot areas for implementation of site-specific Best Management Practices.
