Direct numerical simulations of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate have been performed to verify the applicability of OpenFOAM and adapted mesh with prism layers to turbulent numerical simulation with high fidelity as well as provide a guideline on numerical schemes and parameters of OpenFOAM. Reynolds number based on a momentum thickness at inlet and a free-stream velocity was Reθ=300. Time dependent inflow fields with near-wall turbulent structures were generated by a method of Lund et al. (1998), which was to extract instantaneous velocity fields from an auxiliary simulation with rescaled and recycled velocities at inlet. To ascertain the statistical characteristics of turbulent boundary layer, the mean profiles of streamwise velocity and turbulent intensities obtained from structured and adapted meshes were compared with the previous data.
Resolved simulations are presented fur gravity current flows aiming at studying their spreading rate. The simulations are performed for two extreme configurations such as planar and cylindrical and for 3 different Grashof numbers: $10^5,\;1{\times}10^6\;and\;10^7$. Varying the size of the heavy fluid release, the study is performed for several phases of spreading, namely acceleration, slumping and inertial phases. For the simulations, efficient spectral multi-domain code is used. From the simulations results it is concluded that 2-D results predicts well the mean front velocity during the slumping phase, but fails to predict it during the inertial phase of spreading. It is also observed that the vortex dynamics of the flow is not reproduced well by the 2-D simulation.
This study is numerical analysis about optimal conditions of GDICI (gasoline direct injection compression ignition) engine operation using intake preheating. Numerical modeling was performed by using the KIVA-3V Release2 code integrated Chemkin chemistry solver II. For validation of numerical model, experiments were performed on a single-cylinder engine. Throughout the numerical simulations under variable conditions, the ranges of optimal conditions were found.
Direct numerical and large eddy simulations of transitional flows around studs installed on flat plate and bulbous bow have been performed to investigate an effectiveness of turbulence stimulators on laminar-to-turbulence transition at a very low speed. The flow velocity was determined to be 0.366m/s corresponding to 4 knots of full-scale ship speed when the objective ship was Kriso container ship. The spatial evolution of skin friction coefficient disclosed that a fully development of turbulence was observed behind the second stud installed on flat plate while a rapid transition from laminar to turbulence gave rise to the fully development of turbulence behind the first stud installed on bulbous bow. A comparison of streamwise mean velocity profiles showed that the viscous sublayer and log-layer were in good agreement with previous results although the friction velocity of Smagrosinsky sub-grid scale model was about 10% larger than that of direct numerical simulation. While the turbulence intensities of bulbous bow was similar to those of flat plate in inner region, larger intensities of turbulence were observed in outer region of bulbous bow than those of flat plate.
Due to rapid progress in the performance of high-end computers, numerical prediction of fluid flow and flow-induced sound is expected to become a vital tool for aero- and hydro- dynamic design of various flow-related products. This presentation focuses on the applications of large-scale numerical simulations to complex engineering problems with a particular emphasis placed on the low-speed flows. Flow field computations are based on a large eddy simulation that directly computes all active eddies in the flow and models only those eddies responsible for energy dissipations. The sound generated from low-speed turbulent flows are computed either by direct numerical simulation or by decoupled methods, according to whether or not the feedback effects of the generated sound onto the source flow field can be neglected. Several numerical examples are presented in order to elucidate the present status of such computational methods and discussion on the future prospects will also be given.
Direct numerical simulations (DNSs) of spatially developing turbulent boundary layers (TBLs) over two-dimensional (2-D) and rod and three-dimensional (3-D) cube rough walls were performed to investigate the effects of streamwise spacing on the properties of the TBL The 2-D and 3-D roughness were periodically arranged in the downstream direction with pitches of px/k=2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 10 and for the cube, the spanwise spacing is fixed to pz/k=2 with staggered array, where px and pz are the streamwise and spanwise spacings of the roughness and k is the roughness height. Inspection of the Reynolds stresses showed that except for px/k=2 and 3 over the 2-D rough walls, the effects of the surface roughness extend to the outer layer over the 2-D and 3-D rough walls and the magnitude of the Reynolds shear stress in the outer layer is increased with proportion to px/k. However, such results are contrary to the trends of form drag, roughness junction and roughness length against px/k, which showed the maximum values at px/k=8 and 4 over the 2-D and 3-D rough walls respectively.
Measurement techniques for in-duct acoustic source parameters can be classified into the direct method and the load method, according to whether it utilizes an extra external source or not. It is reported that the load methods yield the negative source resistance and the purpose of this paper is to clarify that the time-varying nature of the source is the main cause of this physically implausible result. For this purpose, the direct and load methods for measuring the source characteristics of a simplified fluid machine are simulated using the time domain numerical analysis. In the numerical simulations, the method of characteristics is employed and the source characteristics are calculated from the resultant data. It is shown that the load method results in negative source resistance for some frequencies, whereas the direct method yields positive values for all frequencies considered. It is found that the result of load method is quite sensitive to the change of cylinder pressure or valve profile in contrast to the direct method.
This paper considers the tensile strength of concrete samples in direct, CTT, modified tension, splitting and ring tests using both of the experimental tests and numerical simulation (particle flow code 2D). It determined that which one of indirect tensile strength is close to direct tensile strength. Initially calibration of PFC was undertaken with respect to the data obtained from Brazilian laboratory tests to ensure the conformity of the simulated numerical models response. Furthermore, validation of the simulated models in four introduced tests was also cross checked with the results from experimental tests. By using numerical testing, the failure process was visually observed and failure patterns were watched to be reasonable in accordance with experimental results. Discrete element simulations demonstrated that the macro fractures in models are caused by microscopic tensile breakages on large numbers of bonded discs. Tensile strength of concrete in direct test was less than other tests results. Tensile strength resulted from modified tension test was close to direct test results. So modified tension test can be a proper test for determination of tensile strength of concrete in absence of direct test. Other advantages shown by modified tension tests are: (1) sample preparation is easy and (2) the use of a simple conventional compression press controlled by displacement compared with complicate device in other tests.
Direct numerical simulations (DNSs) of turbulent pipe flows with temporal deceleration were performed to examine response of the turbulent flows to the deceleration. The simulations were started with a fully-developed turbulent pipe flow at the Reynolds number, $Re_D=24380$, based on the pipe radius and the laminar centerline velocity, and three different constant temporal decelerations were applied to the initial flow with varying dU/dt = -0.001274, -0.00625 and -0.025. It was shown that the mean flows were greatly affected by temporal decelerations with downward shift of log law, and turbulent intensities were increased in particular in the outer layer, compared to steady flows at a similar Reynolds number. The analysis of Reynolds shear stress showed that second- and fourth-quadrant Reynolds shear stresses were increased with the decelerations, and the increase of the turbulence was attributed to enhancement of outer turbulent vortical structures by the temporal decelerations.
We present a novel method to implement time-delayed propagation of radiation fields in cosmological radiative transfer simulations. Time-delayed propagation of radiation fields requires construction of retarded-time fields by tracking the location and lifetime of radiation sources along the corresponding light-cones. Cosmological radiative transfer simulations have, until now, ignored this "light-cone effect" or implemented ray-tracing methods that are computationally demanding. We show that radiative transfer calculation of the time-delayed fields can be easily achieved in numerical simulations when periodic boundary conditions are used, by calculating the time-discretized retarded-time Green's function using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method and convolving it with the source distribution. We also present a direct application of this method to the long-range radiation field of Lyman-Werner band photons, which is important in the high-redshift astrophysics with first stars.
