Purpose : The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate the diagnostic ability of a CCD-based digital system (CDX-2000HQ) in the detection of incipient dental caries. Materials and Methods : 93 extracted human teeth with sound proximal surfaces and interproximal artificial cavities were radiographed using 4 imaging methods. Automatically processed No.2 Insight film (Eastman Kodak Co., U.S.A.) was used for conventional radiography, scanned images of conventional radiograms for indirect digital radiography were used. For the direct digital radiography, the CDX-2000HQ CCD system (Biomedisys Co. Korea) was used. The subtraction images were made from two direct digital images by Sunny program in the CDX-2000HQ system. Two radiologists and three endodontists examined the presence of lesions using a five-point confidence scale and compared the diagnostic ability by ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) analysis and one way ANOV A test. Results: The mean ROC areas of conventional radiography, indirect digital radiography, direct digital radiography, and digital subtraction radiography were 0.9093, 0.9102, 0.9184, and 0.9056, respectively. The diagnostic ability of direct digital radiography was better than the other imaging modalities, but there were no statistical differences among these imaging modalities (p > 0.05). Coclusion : These results indicate that new CCD-based digital systems (CDX-2000HQ) have the potential to serve as an alternative to conventional radiography in the detection of incipient dental caries.
A procedure for the direct detection of (1-3)-$\beta$-glucanase isozymes in electrophoresis gels was developed. The procedure employed the commercial preparation of AZCL-pachyman as a chromogenic substrate for (1-3)-$\beta$-glucanases. The procedure detected the three basic isozymes which have been known to be expressed in germinating barley kernels. A major acidic and a minor isozymes were also detected in germinating kernels. The procedure was proved to be fast, simple and sensitive enough to be used for the analysis of the expression of (1-3)-$\beta$-glucanase isozymes in plant tissues. The detection limit of the procedure for the commercial preparation of Penicillium (1-3)-$\beta$-glucanase was estimated to be as low as 50$\mu$U. The procedure could be used for the investigation of (1-3)-$\beta$-glucanases in laboratories facilitated with ordinary equipments and research personnel.
We evaluated the performance of a novel screening test, PBP2a MRSA rapid kit (Dinona Inc., Iksan, Korea), for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) based on a immunochromatographic assay. The test is able to detect penicillin-binding protein 2a (PBP2a) using the nasal specimens from health care workers. The nasal specimens were obtained from 69 healthcare workers and were incubated in enrichment broth followed eight hours incubatin in BHI with cefoxitin $4{\mu}g/mL$. These broth were tested by PBP2a Rapid Kit. The enrichment broths were also directly tested for tube coagulase using the conventional identification method. 19 of 22 MRSA showed positive results by PBP2a rapid test and direct coagulase test (the sensitivity for detection of MRSA, 86.36%). While, 8 of 47 non-MRSA showed false positive results for the two tests. All of the 8 non-MRSA which showed false positive were co-colonizing isolates with MRCNS and MSSA. In addition, 46 of 49 methicillin-resistant staphylococci (MRS) showed positive results for PBP2a MRSA rapid kit (the sensitivity for detection of MRS, 93.8%), and all of 20 non-MRS showed negative results (specificity, 100%). The combination of PBP2a MRSA rapid kit and direct coagulase test showed the good sensitivity for detection of MRSA from anterior nares but frequently showed false positive results from the co-colonizing carrier with MRCNS and MSSA.

In this paper, a 1.485 Gbps video signal transmission system using the carrier frequency of 240 GHz band was designed and simulated. The sub-harmonic mixer based on Schottky barrier diode was simulated in the transmitter and receiver. Both of heterodyne and direct detection receivers were simulated for each performance analysis. The ASK modulation was used in the transmitter and the envelop detection method was used in the receiver. The transmitter simulation results showed that the RF output power was -11.4 dBm($73{\mu}W$), when the IF input power was -3 dBm(0.5 mW) at the LO power of 7 dBm(5 mW) in sub-harmonic mixer, which corresponds to SSB(Single Side Band) conversion loss of 8.4 dB. This value is similar to the conversion loss of 8.0 dB(SSB) of VDI's commercial model WR3.4SHM(220~325 GHz) at 240 GHz. The combined transmitter and receiver simulation results showed that the recovered signal waveforms were in good agreement to the transmitted 1.485 Gbps NRZ signal.
To support cross potential array and direct potential array, the array for leakage detection of all kinds of water facilities is proposed and it is named as the D-Lux array. The D-Lux array data are arranged to a coloured matrix and it is called the D-Lux view. Low potential difference of anomalous zone shown in D-Lux view implies the indication of leakage zone. Furthermore, for an intuitive interpretation of D-Lux array, equipotential distribution map is made by using D-Lux and direct potential array data. Equipotential distribution map makes us possible to predict import point, export point and the path of water leakage that we could have not anticipated in D-Lux view and the graphs. The water tank experiment and numerical analysis were carried out as preparatory experiment and the field explorations were conducted at a concrete weir and a fill dam. As a result, effective and specific detection of leakage path was possible for the concrete weir and the fill dam.
Gravitational waves predicted by the general relativity almost 100 years ago have been implicated indirectly only by astrophysical observations such as the orbital evolution of binary pulsars. The advanced detectors of gravitational waves will become operational in a few years and they are expected to make direct detection of gravitational wave signal coming from merging of binaries composed of neutron stars or stellar mass black holes from external galaxies. Korean Gravitational Wave Group (KGWG) is contributing to the possible detection through the data analysis of LIGO and Virgo. We summarize the perspectives of the gravitational wave research and the impacts of the detection in the near future in astronomy and astrophysics.
The information on the cloud presence within a instantaneous field of view is the first step toward the derivation of many other geophysical parameters. Here, we first applied the current MODIS cloud detection algorithm developed by University of Wisconsin and compared the results to a visual interpretation of composite data, especially during the daytime. Most of cases, the detection algorithm performs very well, except a few cases with over-detection. One of the reasons for the false detection is due to the time independent use of land information which affects the threshold values of visible channel test. In the presentation, we show detailed analysis of the current cloud detection algorithm and suggest possible way to overcome the current shortfall.
This paper presents improved direct method for calculating the closest saddle node bifurcation (CSNB) point, which is also applicable to the selection of appropriate load shedding, reactive power compensation point detection. The proposed method reduced dimension of nonlinear equation compared with that of Dobson's direct method. The improved direct method, utilizing Newton Iterative method converges very quickly. But it diverges if the initial guess is not very close to CSNB. So the direct method is performed with the initial values obtained by carrying out the iterative method twice, which is considered most efficient at this time. Since sparsity techniques can be employed, this method is a good choice to a large scale system on-line application. Proposed method has been tested for 5-bus, New England 30-bus system.

In this paper, we propose an improved partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) detection scheme that has an adaptive equalizer and can be applied in the asymmetric optical recording system with high-density. We confirmed that the proposed PRML detector improves detection performance. In addition, we implemented the detector by Verilog HDL. The adaptive equalizer is composed of tap coefficient updating unit using LMS algorithn and FIR filter. FIR filter is implemented by the transposed direct form architecture for high speed operation. Viterbi detector is implemented by the register exchange method.
Over the last few years, autonomous vehicles have progressed very rapidly. The odometry technique that estimates displacement from consecutive sensor inputs is an essential technique for autonomous driving. In this article, we propose a fast, robust, and accurate odometry technique. The proposed technique is light detection and ranging (LiDAR)-based direct odometry, which uses a spherical range image (SRI) that projects a three-dimensional point cloud onto a two-dimensional spherical image plane. Direct odometry is developed in a vision-based method, and a fast execution speed can be expected. However, applying LiDAR data is difficult because of the sparsity. To solve this problem, we propose an SRI generation method and mathematical analysis, two key point sampling methods using SRI to increase precision and robustness, and a fast optimization method. The proposed technique was tested with the KITTI dataset and real environments. Evaluation results yielded a translation error of 0.69%, a rotation error of 0.0031°/m in the KITTI training dataset, and an execution time of 17 ms. The results demonstrated high precision comparable with state-of-the-art and remarkably higher speed than conventional techniques.
