  • Syntheses of some novel oxomolybdenum(V) and dioxomolybdenum(VI) complexes with an azo dye methoxyphenolazoantipyrine (HL) derived from 4-aminoantipyrine and 2-methoxyphenol are reported. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility data, IR, UV-Vis, $^1H$ NMR, EPR and FAB mass spectral studies. The physicochemical studies and spectral data indicate that HL acts as a bidentate chelating ligand. The complexes have the general formulae [$MoO(HL)XCl_2$] and [$MoO_2(HL)XCl$],where X=Cl, NCS or $NO_3$. All the complexes are found to have distorted octahedral geometry. Structural and morphological characterization of the complexes [$MoO(HL)Cl_3$](1) and [$MoO_2(HL)Cl_2$](4) before and after gamma ray irradiation, was performed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy( SEM).The ligand and the complexes were screened for their possible antimicrobial activities.

  • Dioxomolybdenum(VI) complexes, MoO$_2$(H-Sal-R)$_2$, R; arylamines, have been synthesized by reactions of dioxobis (salicylaldehydato) molybdenum(VI) with various primary amines. These complexes have been characterized by electric conductivity and spectroscopic studies. Infrared, uv-vis, and proton nmr spectra show that the complexes are six-coordinated with cis-MoO$_2$ group. And mass spectra indicates that the combining ratios for Mo (VI)-ligand are 1 : 2. They are yellow, stable for a considerably long time in the atmosphere at room temperature and slightly soluble in alcohol, dichloromethane and dimethylformamide but insoluble in benzene, ether and carbon tetrachloride.

  • A new series of Mn(II) and Mo(VI) complexes containing the Schiff bases hydrazinecarbothioamide and hydrazinecarboxamide of 5,6-dimethyl-1H-indol-2,3-dione have been synthesized. The nature of bonding and the stereochemistry of the complexes have been deduced from elemental analyses, molecular weight determinations and spectral studies viz. electronic IR, ESR, $^1H$ NMR and $^{13}C$ NMR and X-ray diffraction spectral studies. The magnetic moment values of the manganese(II) complexes are in the range of 5.80-6.15 B.M. suggesting a high spin state of manganese in these complexes. The spectral data are consistent with a tetrahedral geometry around Mn(II) and an octahedral geometry for Mo(VI), in which the ligands act as bidentate chelating agents, coordinated through the nitrogen and sulfur/oxygen atoms. The ligands and their metal complexes have been tested against a number of pathogenic fungi and bacteria at different concentrations and were found to possess sufficient fungicidal and bactericidal properties. Further, the complexes were also tested for their antifertility activity in male albino rats and the results were indeed positive.

  • Dioxobis(sub.-salicylaldiminato) molybdenum (VI) complexes, $MoO_2\;(X-sal-N-R)_2,\;(X=H,\;5-CH_3,\;R=C_6H_5,\;p-F-C_6H_4,\;m-Cl-C_6H_4,p-I-C_6H_4\;and\;p-C_2H_5-C_6H_4)$, have been prepared by reactions of dioxobis(sub.-salicylaldehydato) molybdenum (VI), $MoO_2(X-sal)_2$ with primary amines, in which $MoO_2(X-sal)_2$ complexes were obtained by acidification of a mixture solution of ammonium paramolybdate in water and appropriate salicylaldehyde in methanol. All these complexes show two strong Mo=O stretching imodes in the 900-940$cm^{-1}$ and p.m.r. spectra exhibited only one signal for the azomethine group. These results confirmed that the complexes are six-coordinated octahedron with a $cis-MoO_2$ group and the geometrical configurations of the complexes possess a C2 axis of symmetry. From the mass analyses of the complexes, it found that the composition ratios of $MoO_2$ : ligand are 1 : 2. The charge transfer transition corresponding to N-Mo, and O-Mo occured at 29,000$cm^{-1}$ and 32,000$cm^{-1}$ respectively. Where, the complexes were found to be non-ionic materials by conductivity measurements in dimethylformamide.
