The pore-filled anion-exchange membranes were prepared in this study with an asymmetric poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) membrane as a nascent membrane and poly(vinylbenzyl chloride)(PVBCl) as a polyelectrolyte. The solution of PVBCI having the chloromethylate aryl ring of 80 percents and 1,4-diaminobicyclo [2,2,2]octane(DABCO) was made with the solvent of tetrahydrofuran(THF) and N,N-Dimethylformamide(DMF), which is in the rotio of 8:2. A new preparation method in this study, i.e. in-situ crosslinking, enabled us to produce the pore-filled membranes without change of size, and to control the properties of final membrane with various degree of cross-linking. From the result of surface morphologies of SEM and AFM the polyelectrolyte exists in the pores of nascent membrane as a certain configuration. From the investigation of the solvent affecting much to the permeability and rejection, it was found. that the membranes using DMF and THF showed better performances than the membranes produced by THF only. The water permeability of the final membrane at low pressure(100㎪) showed a typical ultrafiltation membrane's permeability (8-10kg/㎡hr) and good values of rejection(55∼60 percent).
An optically active diacid containing the L-histidine moiety was prepared by reacting pyromellitic dianhydride (1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid 1,2,4,5-dianhydride) 1 with L-histidine 2 in acetic acid, and was polymerized with several aromatic diamines 5a-g to obtain a new series of optically active poly(amide-imide)s (PAIs) using two different methods, such as direct polycondensation in a medium consisting of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP)/triphenyl phosphite (TPP)/calcium chloride ($CaCl_2$)/pyridine (Py) and direct polycondensation in a tosyl chloride (TsCl)/pyridine (Py)/N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) system as a condensation agent. The resulting new polymers 6a-g with inherent viscosity was obtained in good yield. The polymers were readily soluble in polar organic solvents, such as N,N-dimethyacetamide (DMAc), N,N-dimethyformamide (DMF), and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The obtained polymers were characterized by FTIR, specific rotation, elemental analysis as well as $^1$H-NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The thermal stability of the resulting PAIs was evaluated with thermogravimetric analysis techniques under a nitrogen atmosphere.
Background: Chemotaxis is one of the cardinal functions of leukocytes, which enables them to be recruited efficiently to the right place at the right time. Analyzing chemotactic activities is important not only for the study on leukocyte migration but also for many other applications including development of new drugs interfering with the chemotactic process. However, there are many technical limitations in the conventional in vitro chemotaxis assays. Here we applied a new optical assay to investigate chemotactic activities induced in differentiated HL-60 cells. Methods: HL-60 cells were stimulated with 0.8% dimethylformamide (DMF) for 4 days. The cells were analyzed for morphology, flow cytometry as well as chemotactic activities by a time-lapse videomicroscopic assay using a chemotactic microchamber bearing a fibronectin-coated cover slip and an etched silicon chip. Results: Videomicroscopic observation of the real cellular motions in a stable concentration gradient of chemokines demonstrated that HL-60 cells showed chemotaxis to inflammatory chemokines (CCL3, CCL5 and CXCL8) and also a homeostatic chemokine (CXCL12) after DFM-induced differentiation to granulocytic cells. The cells moved randomly at a speed of $6.99{\pm}1.24{\mu}m/min$ (n=100) in the absence of chemokine. Chemokine stimulation induced directional migration of differentiated HL-60 cells, while they still wandered very much and significantly increased the moving speeds. Conclusion: The locomotive patterns of DMF-stimulated HL-60 cells can be analyzed in detail throughout the course of chemotaxis by the use of a time-lapse videomicroscopic assay. DMF-stimulated HL-60 cells may provide a convenient in vitro model for chemotactic studies of neutrophils.
The purpose of this study was to find a suitable cosolvent to $CS_2$ so that desorption efficiency can be improved for both polar and non-polar organic solvent mixtures collected on an activated charcoal tube. Cosolvents added to $CS_2$ include: DMF(N,N-dimethylformamide): $CS_2$ (v/v 1:99), DMF:$CS_2$(v/v 3:97), BC (butyl carbitol, 2-(2-butoxy ethoxy) ethanol):$CS_2$(v/v 1:99), and BC:$CS_2$(v/v 3:97)). The results obtained were as follows : 1. Comparing the desorption efficiency of $CS_2$ with those of $CS_2$ with 1, 3, 5 % DMF and 1, 3 % BC cosolvents for two different groups of charcoal tubes each containing 8 different polar and non-polar organic solvents with 3 different concentration levels, the desorption efficiencies of the cosolvent-added $CS_2$ increased significantly for all polar organic solvents regardless of concentration levels tested. For non-polar organic solvents, no noticeable improvement was detected except xylene and trichloroethylene. The desorption efficiency of xylene increased significantly while that of trichloroethylene increased significantly at the lowest concentration level tested. 2. Either 5 % DMF or 3 % BC was the most suitable cosolvent because the desorption efficiency for non-polar organic solvent mixtures was similar or slightly improved compared with that of $CS_2$, while those of for polar organic solvent mixtures were above 75 % except for cyclohexanone. 3. The smallest variations in desorption efficiency represented by the ratio calculated from the maximum to minimum desorption efficiency for all concentration levels tested were found when 3 % BC was used as a cosolvent. The above results indicate that the desorption efficiency of $CS_2$ particularly for polar organic solvent mixtures collected on a charcoal tube can be significantly improved by the use of cosolvents such as 5 % DMF or 3 % BC. A caution, however, is in order for selecting a cosolvent whenever the cosolvent itself is being used in the workplace or the impurities contained in the cosolvent may interfere with the analytical results. In addition, to improve desorption efficiencies for such organic solvents as cyclohexanone or ketones, it is recommended to use suitable collection and desorption media other than the traditional method of charcoal tube collection/$CS_2$ desorption.
10 wt.% of PAN was dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and 1 wt. % of the multi wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was evenly dispersed in PAN solution by using ultrasonic miner. The 1 wt.% addition of MWCNT increased the specific capacitance by two times more from 82 to 160 F/g. The specific capacitance of carbon nanofiber(CNF)/carbon nanotube(CNT) composite capacitors was about 90 F/g at the current density of 500 mA/g. This value is even larger than the capacitance from the CNF electrode at the current density of 5 mA. The relatively high capacitance at the high current density is a practical importance for applications to supercapacitor in motor vehicle.
We have synthesized an azobenzene-containing polymer (PEA) and a stilbene-containing polymer (PAS) with second-order nonlinear properties. The second harmonic coefficient ($d_{33}$) of the poled polymer films was 84 and 36 pm/V for of PEA and PAS, respectively. The poled state of these polymers was stable at least up to 30 h at room temperature. $T_g$ of these polymers appeared in the range from 120 to $160^{\circ}C$ and onset of initial weight losses in the range from 260 to $270^{\circ}C$. Silicon moieties in the main chain enhanced the solubility of PEA and PAS in common organic solvents such as chloroform, N-methylpyrrolidinone (NMP), N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF), etc.
Cation motive ATPases on cell membranes of Helicobacter pylori were investigated using everted membrane vesicles. Latent ATPases could be ascertained from aggregated vesicle using N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and Triton X-100. By contrast, ultrasonication or chloroform treatments caused membranes to be disrupted, resulting in an alteration of sensitivities against azide or vanadate. Considerable amounts of vanadate-sensitive enzymes were identified from vesicle micelles, prepared by the dilution method. These were activated in the presence of either $Ni^{2+}\;or\;NH_4^+$. From studies employing H. pylori intact cell systems, we found that ATPase expression of this bacterium was markedly dependent upon air composition. It was interesting that cellular expression of $Ni^{2+}$- or $NH_4^{+}$-motive ATPases was significantly affected by extracellular pH, suggesting that these unique enzymes may physiologically be involved in cellular $Ni^2$ import and $NH_4^+$ export, respectively.
