Objective: This purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between dimensionless leg stiffness and kinetic variables during gait performance, and its modulation with body weight. Method: The study sample consisted of 10 young women divided into 2 groups (Control, n=5 and Obese, n=5). Four camcorders (HDR-HC7/HDV 1080i, Sony Corp, Japan) and one force plate (AMTI., USA) were used to analyze the vertical ground reaction force (GRF) variables, center of pressure (COP), low limb joint angle, position of pelvis center and leg lengths during the stance phase of the gait cycle. Results: Our results revealed that the center of mass (COM) displacement velocity along the y-axis was significantly higher in the obese group than that in control subjects. Displacement in the position of the center of the pelvis center (Z-axis) was also significantly higher in the obese group than that in control subjects. In addition, the peak vertical force (PVF) and dimensionless leg stiffness were also significantly higher in the obese group. However, when normalized to the body weight, the PVF did not show a significant between-group difference. When normalized to the leg length, the PVF and stiffness were both lower in the obese group than in control subjects. Conclusion: In the context of performance, we concluded that increased dimensionless leg stiffness during the gait cycle is associated with increased velocity of COM, PVF, and the change in leg lengths (%).
Linearized equations of motion for the vibration analysis of rotating cantilever plates with arbitrary orientation angle are derived in the present work. Two in-plane stretch variables are introduced to be approximated. The use of the two in-plane stretch variables enables one to derive the equations of motion which include proper motion-induced stiffness variation terms. The equations of motion are transformed into dimensionless forms in which dimensionless parameters are identified. The effects of the dimensionless parameters on the modal characteristics of rotating cantilever plates are investigated through numerical study. The natural frequency loci veering along with the associated mode shape variations, which occur while the rotating speed increases, are also presented and discussed.
The optimum dimple shape and arrangement in the channel of a plate heat exchanger with staggered dimples are proposed in this study. Four important geometric parameters are selected as design variables, the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics are examined in the channel of plate heat exchangers. The optimization is accomplished by minimizing the global criterion function which consists of the correlations of Nusselt number and pressure drop. The optimum geometric parameters were found at the dimensionless dimple distance (L) of 0.272, the dimensionless dimple angle ($\beta$) of 0.44, the dimensionless dimple volume (V) of 0.106 and the dimensionless dimple pitch (G) of 0.195. It is found that the heat transfer and pressure drop of the optimum model are increased by approximately 227.9% and 32.9%, respectively, compared to those of the base model.
This research deals with the prediction of compressive strength of normal and high strength concrete using neural networks. The compressive strength was modeled as a function of eight variables: quantities of cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, micro-silica, water and super-plasticizer, maximum size of coarse aggregate, fineness modulus of fine aggregate. Two networks, one using raw variables and another using grouped dimensionless variables were constructed, trained and tested using available experimental data, covering a large range of concrete compressive strengths. The neural network models were compared with regression models. The neural networks based model gave high prediction accuracy and the results demonstrated that the use of neural networks in assessing compressive strength of concrete is both practical and beneficial. The performance of model using the grouped dimensionless variables is better than the prediction using raw variables.
A new metallic sandwich panel with a quasi-Kagome truss core subjected to bending load has been analyzed. First, equations of the failure loads corresponding to the eight failure modes are presented. Then, non-dimensional forms of the equations are derived as functions of three geometric variables, one material parameter (yield strain), one load index and one weight index. Failure maps are presented for a given weight index. By using the dimensionless forms of equations as the design constraints, two kinds of optimization are performed. One is based on the weight, that is, the objective function, namely, the dimensionless load is to be maximized for a given weight. Another is based on the load, that is, the dimensionless weight is to be minimized for a given load. The results of the two optimization processes are found to agree each other. The optimized geometric variables are derived as a function of given weights or failure loads. The performance of the quasi-Kagome truss as the core of a sandwich panel is evaluated by comparison with those of honeycomb cored and octet truss cored panels

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between leg stiffness and kinematic variables according to load while running. Method: Participants included eight healthy men (mean age, $22.75{\pm}1.16years$; mean height: $1.73{\pm}0.01m$; mean body weight, $71.37{\pm}5.50kg$) who ran with no load or a backpack loaded with 14.08% or 28.17% of their body weight. The analyzed variables included leg stiffness, ground contact time, center of gravity (COG) displacement and Y-axis velocity, lower-extremity joint angle (hip, knee, ankle), peak vertical force (PVF), and change in stance phase leg length. Results: Dimensionless leg stiffness increased significantly with increasing load during running, which was the result of increased PVF and contact time due to decreased leg lengths and COG displacement and velocity. Leg length and leg stiffness showed a negative correlation (r = -.902, $R^2=0.814$). COG velocity showed a similar correlation with COG displacement (r = .408, $R^2=.166$) and contact time (r = -.455, $R^2=.207$). Conclusion: Dimensionless leg stiffness increased during running with a load. In this investigation, leg stiffness due to load increased was most closely related to the PVF, knee joint angle, and change in stance phase leg length. However, leg stiffness was unaffected by change in contact time, COG velocity, and COG displacement.
The equations of motion for rotating contilever beams with a concentrated mass loated in an arbitrary position are derived. For the modeling of the concentrated mass the Dirac delta function is used for the mass density function. Parametric studies are performed with five dimensionless variables ; natural frequencies, angular velocity, hub radius, concentrated mass, and the mass location. The concentrated mass, whereverit may locate, lowers the natural frequencies of a stationaly beam. However, when the beam rotates, the natural frequencies(if they increase or decrease) are dictated by the location of the concentrated mass.
Modal characteristics of a cracked beam with a concentrated mass undergoing rotational motion are investigated in this paper. Hybrid deformation variables are employed to derive the equations of motion of a rotating cantilever beam. The flexibility due to crack, which is assumed to be open during the vibration, is calculated basing on a fracture mechanics theory. To obtain more general information, the equations of motion are transformed into a dimensionless form in which dimensionless parameters are identified. The effects of the dimensionless parameters related to the angular speed, the depth and location of a crack and the size and location of a concentrated mass on the modal characteristics of the beam are investigated numerically.
