본 연구는 복잡한 지형적 변화 및 천해특성에 기인된 조석(tide)의 현상이 뚜렷이 나타나는 금강하구(Keum River Estuary)를 하구둑(Estuary Dike) 건설 전${\cdot}$후(Before and After Constructed)의 수심(depth)변화 및 유속(current)변화를 수치실험(numerical experiments)으로 고찰했다.

  • Initial mixing characteristics in near field regions were analyzed by FLOW-3D, for analyzing mixing behavior of submerged discharge from freshwater lake in sea water. FLOW-3D model was applied to the region near Geum-ho dike for its verification. Simulation results from FLOW-3D were compared to the observed data for the verification periods. FLOW-3D showed resonable prediction results compared to the observed data, except underestimation in area near outfall. Particularly, FLOW-3D showed a good prediction for movement of buoyancy jets. In addition, FLOW-3D model was applied to the region near Saemangeum dike, which is to be constructed in near future. It was expected that the results of model application to Saemangeum area could provide substantial information in planning submerged discharge facilities. Based on the model applications to Saemangeum area, it was recommended that outfall should be located to the distance which gave an enough depth of outfall from water surface.

  • The purpose of this study is to find a variation in traveling patterns of soil and soil diffusion due to construction of the sea dike in Saemangum coastal sea region. Water circulations are calculated diagnostically from the observed water temperature, salinity and wind data, and tidal residual current. Three-dimensional movements of injected particles due to currents, turbulence and sinking velocity are tracked by the Euler-Lagrangian method. Calculated a variation in traveling patterns of soil and soil diffusion due to construction of the sea dike deposited mostly from estuarine area of the Geum River to Gokunsan coastal sea region. This results are believed to be the combined effect of coastal circulation.

  • The sea dike is the most important facility of reclamation projects, and plays an important role in securing freshwater in the reservoir. Systematic research on practical approaches and data analysis techniques are lacking even though some geophysical methods such as electrical resistivity and self-potential surveys are included within the inspection processes. Hence, geophysical methods were considered for improvement of precision safety diagnosis methods after problems in the maintenance system have been identified, such as safety checks and precision safety diagnoses. In addition, geophysical methods customized according to variations in ambient environmental limiting factors such as pore pressure changes by tidal fluctuation, compaction characteristics of the fill materials, and the surface condition of the embankment were suggested.

  • The volcanic rocks around the Jayang caldera are classified in an order such as Jukjang Volcanics, Doil Rhyolite, Unjusan Tuff and Rhyolite intrusions. By the SHRIMP U-Pb zircon datings from zircons, eruption ages of the Unjusan Tuff are constrained as 66.65±0.96 Ma in the intracaldera, and 66.08±0.62 Ma in the extracaldera outflow, and intrusion age of the ring dike is investigated as 60.74±0.66 Ma. The age data indicate that the caldera was collapsed between 66.08 Ma and 60.74 Ma, just before the dike intruded after the explosive eruption of the Unjusan Tuff. The Jayang caldera shows the composite igneous process of a perfect volcanic cycle passing from ash-flow tuffs through caldera collapse into ring dikes in the Jayang area.

  • Ecological stability of the Lake Shihwa, artificially made by the construction of the Shihwa Dike, was evaluated by the species composition and variation in biomass of zooplankton. Species composition and seasonal variation in biomass in the seaside stations were similar to those observed in nearby bays and coastal zone. However, those in the lake sites showed very different patterns. The brackish water copepod, Sinocaianus tenellus, held the first rank in every season (with more than 66% in spring, 98% in summer and fall, and 80% in winter). The species composition was very simple and the biomass (in terms of total individuals $m^{-3}$) varied markedly with season up to the order of $10^4$ magnitude. These results imply that the lake ecosystem made by the construction of Sihwa dike is in very unstable stage probably due to the input of industrial wastes as well as unpredictable variation in salt content caused by irregular control of the watergate of the dike and resultant irregular flow direction of the water through the gate.
