Effect of Digital Noise Reduction of Hearing Aids on Music and Speech Perception

  • Background and Objectives: Although many studies have evaluated the effect of the digital noise reduction (DNR) algorithm of hearing aids (HAs) on speech recognition, there are few studies on the effect of DNR on music perception. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effect of DNR on music, in addition to speech perception, using objective and subjective measurements. Subjects and Methods: Sixteen HA users participated in this study (58.00±10.44 years; 3 males and 13 females). The objective assessment of speech and music perception was based on the Korean version of the Clinical Assessment of Music Perception test and word and sentence recognition scores. Meanwhile, for the subjective assessment, the quality rating of speech and music as well as self-reported HA benefits were evaluated. Results: There was no improvement conferred with DNR of HAs on the objective assessment tests of speech and music perception. The pitch discrimination at 262 Hz in the DNR-off condition was better than that in the unaided condition (p=0.024); however, the unaided condition and the DNR-on conditions did not differ. In the Korean music background questionnaire, responses regarding ease of communication were better in the DNR-on condition than in the DNR-off condition (p=0.029). Conclusions: Speech and music perception or sound quality did not improve with the activation of DNR. However, DNR positively influenced the listener's subjective listening comfort. The DNR-off condition in HAs may be beneficial for pitch discrimination at some frequencies.

Can a spontaneous smile invalidate facial identification by photo-anthropometry?

  • Purpose: Using images in the facial image comparison process poses a challenge for forensic experts due to limitations such as the presence of facial expressions. The aims of this study were to analyze how morphometric changes in the face during a spontaneous smile influence the facial image comparison process and to evaluate the reproducibility of measurements obtained by digital stereophotogrammetry in these situations. Materials and Methods: Three examiners used digital stereophotogrammetry to obtain 3-dimensional images of the faces of 10 female participants(aged between 23 and 45 years). Photographs of the participants' faces were captured with their faces at rest (group 1) and with a spontaneous smile (group 2), resulting in a total of 60 3-dimensional images. The digital stereophotogrammetry device obtained the images with a 3.5-ms capture time, which prevented undesirable movements of the participants. Linear measurements between facial landmarks were made, in units of millimeters, and the data were subjected to multivariate and univariate statistical analyses using Pirouette® version 4.5 (InfoMetrix Inc., Woodinville, WA, USA) and Microsoft Excel® (Microsoft Corp., Redmond, WA, USA), respectively. Results: The measurements that most strongly influenced the separation of the groups were related to the labial/buccal region. In general, the data showed low standard deviations, which differed by less than 10% from the measured mean values, demonstrating that the digital stereophotogrammetry technique was reproducible. Conclusion: The impact of spontaneous smiles on the facial image comparison process should be considered, and digital stereophotogrammetry provided good reproducibility.

A Study on Research Trends in Literacy Education through a Key word Network Analysis (키워드 네트워크 분석을 통한 리터러시 교육 연구 동향)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the factors related to learning through analysis of domestic research trends in literacy and to present the direction of literacy education. Research papers from 1993 to February 2022 were collected using RISS. 'Literacy' and 'Education' were used as search keywords, and 200 papers were selected for analysis. As a result of analysis using keyword network analysis, 118 keywords appeared at least three times out of a total of 810 keywords. The order of the keywords with the highest frequency is 'digital literacy', 'media literacy', and 'elementary school'. The following direction was suggested through the analysis results. First, it is required to establish an online teaching and learning resource platform and link it with education policy. Second, it is necessary to set literacy competencies and seek ways to improve competencies. Third, a digital-based convergence education model should be developed. This study is meaningful in that it analyzed the most recent literacy studies and suggested the direction of literacy education.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore ways a digital therapeutics-based community care plans for the rehabilitation in dysarthria in a situation where non-face-to-face services are expanding in the COVID-19 era. To this end, a qualitative study was conducted on experts working in hospitals, speech-language pathology centers, and social welfare centers, and as a result of the study, 3 topics, 9 sub-themes, and 18 content units were derived. Based on the analysis results, the digital therapeutics-based community care model consisted of 9 types: remote diagnosis, telepractice, rehabilitation training program, peer supporters, clinical support, communication, psychosocial intervention, and care plan services. This study will be able to provide basic data for health care & welfare services using digital therapeutics and guidelines for establishing shared care plans based on multidisciplinary cooperation.

A Study on Abdominal Temperature of Dysmenorrhea Patients

  • Dysmenorrhea is one of the common gynecologic disorders of menstruation women. Primary dysmenorrhea is menstrual pain without pelvic pathology. whereas secondary one is painful mestruation with underlying pathology. The cause of primary dysmenorrhea is increased endometrial prostaglandin. The mechanisims underlying secondary dysmenorrhea are not eluciated. There are many blood vessels under the skin and they play a very important role in the thermal control of peripheral part. The control of blood circulation is mainly controlled by autonomic nervous system and it is known that D.I.T.I. (digital infra-red thermographic imaging) is an objective method showing the body temperature. I observed the abdominal themerature of 49 patients complaning of dysmenorrhea who visited the gynecologic department of Pundang Oriental Medical Hospital during 1997. In order to rule out thermal abnormality due to obesity. the causes whose obesity index were above I. were excluded in this study. The mean temperature of lower abdomen of the dysmenorrhea group was $35.22{\pm}1.33^{\circ}C$ and control group was $36.01{\pm}0.74^{\circ}C$.

Clinical Case of the Korean Medical Treatment for the Patient with Anterior Interosseous Nerve Syndrome (전골간신경 증후군의 치료증례 보고)

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a possibility of the Korean medical treatment in patient with anterior interoseous nerve entrapment syndrome. The patient treated with acupunture, herbal medicine and Needle-embedding Therapy from April 19th to May 15th. We measured Visual Analotgue Scale(VAS), and Observed the change in body tempreture using Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging(DITI). After received Korean medical treatment, the patient showed improvement in muscle strength, sensation, VAS, temperature differential. Therefore we can consider Korean medical treatment before operation in interosseous nerve syndrome.

Research Trends on the Acupuncture Treatment of Shoulder Impingement Syndrome (어깨 충돌증후군의 침치료에 관한 연구 동향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate reasearch trend of acupuncture treatment on shoulder impingement syndrome. This study investigated the recent studies about acupuncture treatment for shoulder impingement syndrome via searching Korean and foreign electronic databases(Research Information Services, National Digital Science Library, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integated Services, PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure). The search term was searched by combining 'shoulder impingement sydrome', 'subacrominal pain', 'acupuncture', 'needle therapy', and was limited to the articles published from 2005 to 2017. 14 studies were found to be analyzed according to the type of study, the number of cases, the type of treatment, the instruments for assessment and published year. 14 studies were published since 2005, 6 case reports, 8 randomized controlled trials. In the treatment of shoulder impingement syndrome, treatments such as acupuncture, acupotomy, pharmacopuncture, laser acupuncture, combined treatment of exercise and rehabilitation were performed. Visual analogue scale(VAS), range of motion(ROM) and various questionnaires were used as primary assessments. In each study, acupuncture treatment was reported to have a significant effect in the pain, range of motion and disability of shoulder impingement syndrome. In order to ensure objective evidence on acupuncture treatment, large scale case reports and randomized controlled trials should be continued.

Case Report of Peroneal Nerve Palsy with Foot Drop Treated with Complex Korean Medical Treatment (족하수를 동반한 비골신경마비의 환자 1례에 대한 한의학 복합치료 증례보고)

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a possibility of the Korean medical treatment in patient with peroneal nerve palsy, and to suggest importance of differential diagnosis of foot drop. Peroneal nerve pasly was diagnosed by lumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) and electromyogram(EMG). The patient was treated with acupuncture, herbal medicine, bee-venom acupuncture and moxibustion from March 7th to May 2nd. We measured Numerical Rating Scale(NRS), Range of Motion(ROM) of the ankle, and observed the change in body temperature using Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging(DITI). After received Korean medical treatment, the patient showed improvement in all the scales mentioned above. The result showed that Korean medical treatment is effective in peroneal nerve palsy before operation.

  • Digital morph expresses the imaginary beyond the representation of reality by expressing the narrative effect characteristically. In particular, the effect of affect can be considered to be a characteristic of digital cinema as a post-cinema. In (2013), Morphing image prominently shows the characteristics of post-cinema. By actively utilizing software technology, this film gives a shocking effect by expressing the magical image. Paying attention to the post-cinematic characteristics of morphing different from classical film, this article treated the characteristics of digital morphing. The digital morphing presents the flow of affect visualizing uncanny phenomenon of body transformation. This evokes concept of neuro-image which Patricia Pisters distinguished the neuropsychiatric pathology that appears actively on the contemporary digital screen. The Neuro-image goes beyond the temporality of Deleuze's time-image presenting future. Allegedly, the morphing of presents the neuro-images when Nina's body changed to hybrid body with black swan. Digital Morphing technique provides a shocking effect, showing delirium when the body bizarrely deformed while dancing ballet. This is different from the attraction of the morphing in film, it expresses the emotion of the neoliberal era beyond representation. In conclusion, the digital morphing presents the neuro-image system modulating the shock. This shows the characteristics of digital film which interacting and controling the shock effect as post-cinema.

Comparisons of Cognitive Functions between Urban and Rural Dwelling Older Adults: A Preliminary Study (도시와 농촌거주 노인의 인지기능 비교: 예비연구)

  • Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and naming tests have been used clinically as screening and diagnostic tools for mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Researches in other countries have reported that residential areas would affect one's cognitive abilities. In Korean, however, there was no systematic studies on geographical influences to cognitive ability among a sample of urban/rural residents. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of urban/rural locality of residence on cognitive tests in normal elderly Korean. Residents aged 65 years and older (N=108) were administered the K-MMSE, confrontation/generative naming tests, and medical/socio-demographic interview. When comparing the total number of correct responses between urban residents and rural residents, the performances of rural group were significantly worse than those of the urban group in K-MMSE. Based on the results, our finding suggests that a factor of residential locality should be considered to examine the function and explain the cognitive decline in rural community-dwelling elders.
