  • The aim of this study is to determine whether subcutaneous temperature (ST) was correlated with rectal temperature (RT) in cattle with inducing artificial fever. In order to determine the correlation between their temperatures, the experiment was performed as follow: Among nine Holstein steers, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was intravenously administered at a dose of $0.5{\mu}g/kg$ of body weight to six Holstein steer, then, 6 ml of saline was administrated to three steers as a control group. After LPS injection, ST was recorded using subcutaneously implanted thermo-logger sensors at 10-min intervals, and RT was measured using a digital thermometer at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 8 and 12 h. In steers with LPS injection, RT was highest at 3 to 4 h and recovered to a pre-challenge temperature at 8-22 h. A similar fluctuation was shown in ST except for an unexpected decrease at 1 h, and a positive correlation between RT and ST was observed in LPS-challenged steers (r = 0.497, P = 0.04). This result suggests that ST could be utilized as an index for early detection of infectious diseases or physiological events.

  • Recently, the pollution of soil and groundwater becomes a serious social problem, and geophysical exploration methods have been introduced as a remedial investigation method of subsurface. Digital technologies such as personal computer have revolutionized our ability to acquire large volume of data in a short term, and to produce more reliable results for subsurface image. Also, color graphics easily visualizes the survey results in a more understandable manner, and it is widely used for not only characterizing the contaminated subsurface but also monitoring contaminant and remedial process. In this paper, electrical resistivity and electromagnetic (EM) surveys were carried out in order to understand characteristics of waste landfills, and the applicability of geophysical prospecting to site assessment of waste landfill was also tested. According to the result, electrical resistivity and electromagnetic (EM) surveys were effective in estimating distribution of the leachate plume.

  • In order to cultivate the talents acquired in the fourth industrial revolution, developed countries' government are actively engaged in the campaigns encouraging K-12 students to participate in the maker movement. Maker education is regarded as one possible solution based on high tech in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, and it is spreading widely along with STEM education. In South Korea, STEAM education was actively conducted nationwide, and since 2017, STEAM and maker education have been linked showing mutual development. However, compared to STEAM education linked to the curriculum, comparison and activity-based research on maker education for teenagers is still insufficient. Therefore, this study aimed to suggest implications for STEAM education and maker education by analyzing the motivation of Korean youth to participate in maker activities. The subjects of this study are high school students who participated in maker education programs in student community for the first time in Korea. In this study, students were classified into engineering-related career group and non-engineering-related career groups based on their career intentions, and the motivation and understanding of participation in maker activities were compared. As a result of the study, male students participated more in maker education community activities than female students, and the engineering-related career group had a higher intention to participate in games, outdoor activities, IT equipment, digital production, and electrical/electronic production activities than the non-engineering-related career group. In addition, in the fields of handicraft/art, home baking, installing, and horticultural agriculture, there was no difference in the intention of participate in the engineering-related career group and the non-engineering-related career group. It was found that the engineering-related career group believed that there was a strong relationship between the maker education community activity, career exploration and future career choice, while the non-engineering-related career group believed that the relationship is less strong. It was also found that the engineering-related career group was participating more actively in the maker activity than the other group.

  • In this study, we analyzed the impacts of land surface characteristics on spatially and temporally distributed soil moisture values at the Yongdam and Soyang-river dam watersheds in 2014 and 2015. The soil moisture, NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and temperature values at the spatio-temporal scales were estimated using satellite-based MODIS (MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) products. Then the Pearson correlations between soil moisture and land surface characteristics (NDVI, temperature and DEM-digital elevation model) were estimated and analyzed, respectively. Overall, the monthly soil moisture values at the time step were highly influenced by the precipitation amounts. Also, the results showed that the soil moisture has the strong correlation with DEM while the temperature was inversely correlated with the soil moisture. However the monthly correlations between NDVI and soil moisture were highly varied along the time step. These findings indicated that water loss near the land surface are highly occurred by soil and plant activities as evapotranspiration and infiltration during the no/less precipitation period. But the high precipitation amounts reduce the impacts of land surface characteristics because of saturated condition of land surface. Thus these results demonstrated that soil moisture values are highly correlated with land surface characteristics. Our findings can be useful for water resources/environmental management, agricultural drought, etc.

  • This study analyzed the spatio-temporal change pattern of greenhouse areas for Sangnam-myeon and Samrangjin-eup of Miryang-si in Gyeongnam, which is one of major greenhouse area. First, in order to overcome the lack of statistical data of the distribution of greenhouses, aerial and satellite images were interpreted from 1987 to 2018, and the spatial distribution of the greenhouse parcels which has continuously increased was mapped based on the digital cadastral map. Next, through the emerging hot spot tool in ArcGIS Desktop, the spatio-temporal change in transition from open-field to greenhouse cultivation was classified into 9 clusters. About 67.7% of the target area was categorized as a hot spot, and the pattern of New hot spot, which were recently converted to greenhouse parcels, covered about 34.1%. While, about 11.3% of parcels were expected to keep the existing open-field cultivation practice for a while. Overall, the greenhouse parcels have been densely developed along a river and were lately expanding even to the far neighbor. It implied that, in the future, the competition of water intake among farms would be more serious and the environmental responsibility in consideration of water quality as well as quantity would be getting strengthened due to increasing pollution loads and river intake.

  • Banana is the eighth most important crop in the world designated by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). In terms of production, it is the fourth most harvested crop following wheat, rice, and corn, considered to be a promising food source for mankind as it is not only scrumptious but also rich in nutrients. However, abnormal cultivation methods that mankind has invented to breed bananas is currently pushing them to the state of extinction. The aim of this study is to develop information-rich digital contents that can easily and intriguingly convey information about steadily but certainly increasing risk of banana extinction. The end-users are middle and high school students who are assumed to be aware of the agricultural revolution through their school curriculum. The linear storytelling method was meant to encourage the end-users to be interested in the causes and processes in which banana has become endangered. For generating a natural interaction between the content and the end-users, a parallel, upper-lower structure was used, in which the relationship between the stories comprising several stages and the information graphic supporting each story is represented. This paper can support an information campaign about the endangered species.

  • A drone invented for the military has been increased the range of application with the development of relevant technology, and it influences to include the private area. Currently, the use of drone has been increasing in many areas, such as agriculture, unmanned parcel service, production of image contents, and architecture. In 2021, South of Korea, a drone certificate system for drone flight is introduced and on operation. In case of drone flight with the maximum takeoff weight as 2kg or up, the flight experience and practical examination are required, whereas in case of drone lighter than 2kg, the online education qualification is enough to operate it without the flight experience and practical examination. Recently, the drone related accidents have been increasing with the rapidly supply of camera drones with the maximum takeoff weight as less than 2kg. This paper introduces the characteristics of the camera drone to meet burgeoning demand, and discusses an education plan for the camera drone.

  • The objective of this study was to calibrate and validate the HSPF (Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran) model for estimating the runoff of the Hapcheon dam watershed. Spatial data, such as watershed, stream, land use, and a digital elevation map, were used as input data for the HSPF model. Observed runoff data from 2000 to 2016 in study watershed were used for calibration and validation. Hydrologic parameters for runoff calibration were selected based on the user's manual and references, and trial and error method was used for parameter calibration. The $R^2$, RMSE (root-mean-square error), RMAE (relative mean absolute error), and NSE (Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient) were used to evaluate the model's performance. Calibration and validation results showed that annual mean runoff was within ${\pm}4%$ error. The model performance criteria for calibration and validation showed that $R^2$ was in the rang of 0.78 to 0.83, RMSE was 2.55 to 2.76 mm/day, RMAE was 0.46 to 0.48 mm/day, and NSE was 0.81 to 0.82 for daily runoff. The amount of inflow to Hapcheon Dam was calculated from the calibrated HSPF model and the result was compared with observed inflow, which was -0.9% error. As a result of analyzing the relation between inflow and storage capacity, it was found that as the inflow increases, the storage increases, and when the inflow decreases, the storage also decreases. As a result of correlation between inflow and storage, $R^2$ of the measured inflow and storage was 0.67, and the simulated inflow and storage was 0.61.

  • In this study, real-time character navigation using AR lens developed by Nreal is developed. Real-time character navigation is not possible with general marker-based AR because NPC characters must guide while moving in an unspecified space. To replace this, a markerless AR system was developed using Digital Twin technology. Existing markerless AR is operated based on hardware such as GPS, gyroscope, and magnetic sensor, so location accuracy is low and processing time in the system is long, resulting in low reliability in real-time AR environment. In order to solve this problem, using the SLAM technique to construct a space into a 3D object and to construct a markerless AR based on point location, AR can be implemented without any hardware intervention in a real-time AR environment. This real-time AR environment configuration made it possible to implement a navigation system using characters in tourist attractions such as Suncheon Bay Garden and Suncheon Drama Filming Site.
