  • Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy and reliability of measurements performed using two different software programs on digital models generated using two types of plaster model scanners (a laser scanner and a computed tomography [CT] scanner). Methods: Thirty plaster models were scanned with a 3Shape laser scanner and with a Flash CT scanner. Two examiners performed measurements on plaster models by using digital calipers and on digital models by using Ortho Analyzer (3Shape) and Digimodel® (OrthoProof) software programs. Forty-two measurements, including tooth diameter, crown height, overjet, overbite, intercanine and intermolar distances, and sagittal relationship, were obtained. Results: Statistically significant differences were not found between the plaster and digital model measurements (ANOVA); however, some discrepancies were clinically relevant. Plaster and digital model measurements made using the two scanning methods showed high intraclass coefficient correlation values and acceptable 95% limits of agreement in the Bland-Altman analysis. The software used did not influence the accuracy of measurements. Conclusions: Digital models generated from plaster casts by using laser and CT scanning and measured using two different software programs are accurate, and the measurements are reliable. Therefore, both fabrication methods and software could be used interchangeably.

  • In Raynaud's phenomenon, the authors measured finger blood flow after ice water exposure by analyzing the time activity curve of radionuclide angiography on both hands. The results were as follows: 1) The digital blood flow did not decrease after ice water exposure in normal subjects. 2) In the patients with Raynaud's phenomenon, there were two groups: the one had decreased digital blood flow after cold exposure, and the other had paradoxically increased digital blood flow after cold exposure. 3) There was no difference in the digital blood flow of hand in room temperature between the normal and the patients with reduced digital blood flow after cold exposure, but the digital blood flow of the hand in room temperature was markedly reduced in the patients with paradoxically increased flow after cold exposure. 4) In the static image the difference was not significant in comparision with the dynamic study, because it represents pooling of the blood in the vein rather than flow. 5) After the treatment with nifedipine, the digital blood flow increased. In conclusion, the radionuclide angiography was useful in measuring the digital blood flow in Raynaud's phenomenon, and further studies with various drugs is expected.

  • A variety of digital technologies are being used throughout the entire implant treatment process of diagnosis, surgery, impression, design, and fabrication of prostheses. In this case, using a digital surgical guide, sinus floor elevation was performed without complications, and the implants were placed in the planned position. After the healing period for osseointegration, CAD-CAM (Computer-aided design-Computer-aided manufacturing) customized abutments and provisional prostheses were delivered. While using the provisional prosthesis, occlusal change was observed. To transfer the intermaxillary relationship and abutment position that reflect occlusal change and axial displacement, double scanning and abutment-level digital impressions were taken. Abutment superimposition was used to capture the subgingival margin without gingival retraction. Then, the definitive prosthesis was designed and fabricated with digital system. We report a case applying digital system, to achieve the predictable result as well as the efficient treatment process from implant surgery to fabricating prosthesis in the posterior area.

  • The Center for Imaging Human Structures (CIH) was established in December 2002 to develop new diagnostic imaging techniques and to make them available to the greater community of biomedical and clinical researchers at Sungkyunkwan University. CIH has been involved in 5 specific activities to provide solutions for early diagnosis and improved treatment of human diseases. The five area goals include: 1) development of a digital mammography system with computer aided diagnosis (CAD); 2) development of digital radiological imaging techniques; 3) development of unified medical solutions using 3D image fusion; 4) development of multi-purpose digital endoscopy; and, 5) evaluation of new imaging systems for clinical application

  • Although cross rolling process has many advantages in forging a joint shaft, an automotive component of front axle unit, subsequent process is necessary to straighten its bending during forging process. In this paper the bending minimization of the joint shaft was studied to eliminate such an additional process. First of all, a characteristic diagram was used to find out factors affecting the bending of the shaft. Also design of experiments was utilized for estimating the influence of those factors. It was found that the phase angle, which is the difference in starting positions between upper and lower dies, was important to minimize the bending of joint shaft and die cooling is necessary to diminish the distribution of bending.

  • Digital dentistry has influenced many dental procedures, such as three-dimensional (3D) diagnosis and treatment planning, surgical splints, and prosthetic treatments. Patient-specific protective appliances (PSPAs) prevent dental injury during endotracheal intubation. However, the required laboratory work takes time, and there is the possibility of tooth extraction while obtaining the dental impression. In this technical report, we utilized new digital technology for creating PSPAs, using direct intraoral scanners and 3D printers for dental cast fabrication.

  • We applied the Atmospheric Pressure Plasma (AP-plasma) to the MgO film to try to control the Aging-time on the PDP production-line. The MgO film surface and the discharge characteristics of AC-PDPs were investigated, using the plasma-treated MgO film. The Aging-time change can be achieved by treating the MgO film with plasma. This method can be adapted to the mass production-line.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of neural mobilization on the grip strength. Subjects were consist of 28 people who had no disorder of upper extremity from 19 to 29 years of age(mean age: 21.86) during 7 day from March 22, 2004 to 30 day. All Subjects received Neural mobilization of upper extremity for 15 minutes during 7 days. Digital grip strength dynamometer was used to measure grip strength. All measurements of each patients were measured at pre-treatment and 7 days post-treatment. The results of this study were summarized as follows : 1. The grip strength wasn't significantly increased between pre-treatment and post-treatment at 1 days(p .05). 2. The grip strength was significantly increased between pre-treatment and post-treatment at 7 days(p .05). 3. The results of analyzed effects of neural mobilization on the grip strength between pre-treatment and post-treatment that wasn't significantly increased at 1days(p.05) but significantly increased at 7days(p .05).

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze regional variation factors of hypertension treatment rate in COVID-19 based on the analysis results based on ecological methodology. To this end, data suitable for ecological analysis were collected from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's regional health statistics, local government COVID-19 confirmed cases, National Health Insurance Corporation, Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service's welfare statistics, and Korea Transport Institute's traffic access index. Descriptive statistics and correlation analysis were conducted using SPSS Statistics 23 for regional variation and related factors in hypertension treatment rate, and geographical weighted regression analysis was conducted using Arc GIS for regional variation factors. As a result of the study, the overall explanatory power of the calculated geo-weighted regression model was 27.6%, distributed from 23.1% to 33.4% by region. As factors affecting the treatment rate of hypertension, the higher the rate of basic living security medical benefits, diabetes treatment rate, and health institutions per 100,000 population, the higher the rate of hypertension treatment, the lower the number of COVID-19 confirmed patients, the lower the rate of physical activity, and the alcohol consumption. Percentage of alcohol consumption decreased due to COVID-19 pandemic. It was analyzed that the lower the ratio, the higher the treatment rate for hypertension. Based on these results, the analysis of regional variables in the treatment rate of hypertension in COVID-19 can be expected to be effective in managing the treatment rate of hypertension, and furthermore, it is expected to be used to establish community-centered health promotion policies.
