  • This study presents development of digital particle holographic system and its application to spray field to measure three-dimensional velocities and sizes of spray droplets. A double exposure hologram recording system with synchronization system for time control was established and digital holograms can be recorded in a short time interval. To process recorded holograms, the correlation coefficient method was used for focal plane determination of particles. To remove noises and improve the quality of holograms and reconstructed images, the Wiener filter was adopted. The two-threshold and image segmentation methods were used in binary image transformation. For particle pairing, the match probability method was adopted. The developed system was applied to spray field and three-dimensional velocities and sizes of spray droplets were measured. The measurement results of digital holographic system were compared with those made by laser instruments, PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer), which proved the feasibility of in-line digital particle holographic system as a good measurement tool for spray droplets.

  • The digital HPTV(holographic particle tracking velocimetry) velocity field measurement system consists of four steps: recording, numerical reconstruction, particle extraction and velocity extraction. In the velocity extraction process, we improved the two frame PTV algorithm to extract 3-D displacement information of each particle located in 3D space. Because a digital CCD camera was used, some factors such as spatial resolution, numerical aperture, and particle concentration influenced on the performance of the developed digital HPTV. Especially, the particle concentration $(C_o)$ affected the reconstruction efficiency and recovery ratio in the numerical reconstruction and particle extraction procedure. In this paper, the effect of particle concentration reconstruction efficiency and recovery ratio were analyzed experimentally. Optimal particle concentration was found to be in the range of $C_o=11{\sim}17\;particles/mm^3$.

  • Optical scanning holography (OSH) is a distinct digital holographic technique in that real-time holographic recording a three-dimensional (3-D) object can be acquired by using two-dimensional active optical heterodyne scanning. Applications of the technique so far have included optical scanning cryptography, optical scanning microscopy, 3-D pattern recognition, 3-D holographic TV, and 3-D optical remote sensing. This paper reviews some of the recent progress in OSH. Some possible further works are also discussed.

  • It is generally known that many cases of pathological rough voice are characterized not by simple random perturbations but by quasi-periodic perturbations in the speech wave. However, there are few studies on the characteristics of perturbations in vocal fold vibrations associated with this type of voice. We have been conducting studies of pathological vocal fold vibration using a high-speed digital image recording system developed by our institute, Compared to the ordinary high-speed-motion picture system, the present system is compact and simple to operate and thus, it suited for pathological data collection. • The capability of real-time observation in TEM is quite useful to study dynamic phenomena of materials in a certain variable ambience. In performing the experiment, the choice of video recording program is an important factor to obtain high quality of movie streaming. Window Movie Maker (WMM) is generally recommended as a default video recording program if one uses "DV Capture" function in DigitalMicrograph$^{TM}$ (DM) software. However, the image quality does not often satisfy the condition for high-resolution microscopic analysis since the severe information loss in the final result occurs during the conversion process. As a good candidate to overcome this problem, Virtual-Dub is highly recommended since the information loss can be minimized through the streaming process. In this report, we demonstrated how useful VirtualDub works in a high-resolution movie recording. Quantitative comparison of the information quality between the images recorded by each software, WMM and VirtualDub, was carried out based on histogram analysis. As a result, the image recorded by VirtualDub was improved ~13% in brightness and ~122% in contrast compared with the image obtained by WMM at the same imaging condition. Remarkably, the gray gradation (meaning an amount of information) becomes wider up to ~115% than that of the WMM result.

  • It is described that the total analysis of CD-R, a digital recording media, including the planning and performing chemical analysis of cross sectional structure of recording layer, dye composition and chemical structure as an example of design for chemical analysis. Since chemical analysis of unknown sample is often involved the complicated process requiring many experiences and knowledge, students feel difficulties in planning the procedure of chemical analysis and selecting analytical methods. Thus, an example of chemical analysis is provided here to help student understanding the hole procedure of CD-R analysis. In this study, SEM is used to determine the cross sectional structure of PC substrate and recoding layer of CD-R. The dyes in recording layer is dissolved with solvent and separated with using TLC, analyzed with using UV-Vis absorption spectrometer. Then, the chemical structure of each component is determined with using GC-MS, NMR and mass spectrometer.

  • This study presents in-line digital particle holography and its application to spray droplets to measure the characteristics of spray droplets. Several important parameters at the time of hologram recording such as the object distance and the region of laser beam used were verified. The correlation coefficient method with important parameters such as the reconstruction interval and the correlation interval was used for determination of the focal planes of particles. The optimal values of all these parameters are obtained by either numerical simulation of holograms or experiments. Using these optimal parameters, double pulse digital spray holograms in a short time interval were recorded with the synchronization system for the time control. The spatial positions of droplets that are used for the evaluation of the three dimensional droplet velocities can be easily located, which proves the feasibility of the digital holographic technology for measurements of several important features of spray droplets.

  • Background: The motor unit number index (MUNIX) and motor unit size index (MUSIX) refer to the electrophysiological measurement of the motor units using the surface electromyographic interference pattern (SIP) recorded during graded muscle contraction. In order to improve the reliability and reproducibility of MUNIX by the systematization of the graded muscle contractions, we applied a digital hand instrument to the procedure of recording SIP signals. Methods: We tested the applicability of the digital instrument in the MUNIX technique by assessing the mean values and the reproducibility of the MUNIX involving the abductor pollicis brevis (APB) and the abductor digiti minimi (ADM) muscles in 30 healthy adults. Results: The digital dynamometer was successfully applied to the MUNIX measurements of the APB and ADM muscles, and showed high reproducibility across trials. Conclusions: Application of the digital instrument would be useful in improving the reliability and reproducibility of MUNIX.

  • In recent years welfare of animals is the biggest challenge because animals, especially dogs are widely recognized as pet as well as they are using as service animals. So, for the wellbeing of the dog it is necessary to perform objective assessment to track their behavior in everyday life. In this paper, we have proposed an automatic behavior assessment system for dogs based on a neck worn and tail worn accelerometer and gyroscope platform, and data analysis techniques that recognize typical dog activities. We evaluate the system based on the analysis of 8 behavior traits in 3 dogs, incorporating 2 breeds of various sizes. Our proposed framework able to reproduce the manual assessment that is based on the video recording which is treated as gold standard that exhibits the real-life use case of automated dog behavior analysis.
