  • The diffusion and partition coefficients of polyurethane foam (PUF) are estimated using a microbalance experiment and small chamber test. The microbalance is used to measure sorption/desorption kinetics and equilibrium data. When the diffusion condition is controlled in the chamber of the sample, interactions between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and PUF can lead to the estimation of a relatively homogenous rate of mass transfer in the interiors and surfaces of PUF. The estimates of the material/air partition coefficient (K) and the material-phase diffusion coefficient (D) are shown to be independent of the concentrations of VOCs. This approach, if applied to a diffusion-controlled or physically-based model, can facilitate more precise prediction of their source/sink behavior. Although further research and more rigorous validation is needed, an emission model applied with the diffusion and partition coefficients from this research holds promise for the improvement of reliability in predicting the behavior of VOCs emitted from porous building materials by D and K.

  • This paper investigates the effect of the concrete containing mineral admixtures(pozzolanic materials such as fly-ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag, silica fume and meta kaolin) on the resistance properties to chloride ion invasion. The purposed testing procedure was applied to the concrete replaced mineral admixtures for 3${\~}$4 replacement ratios under water-binder ratios ranged from 0.40 to 0.55. For the electro-migration test, Tang and Nilsson's method was used to estimate the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion. As a results, the water-binder ratios, kinds of mineral admixtures and replacement ratios, water curing periods had a great effect on the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion, and the optimal replacement ratios had a limitation for each mineral admixtures. Also, the use of mineral admixtures by mass(replacement of OPC) enhance the resistance ability against chloride penetration compared with the plain concrete. The compressive strength was shown related to the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion, the compressive strength increases with the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion decreasing. Below the 50 MPa, the variation of diffusion coefficient of concrete replaced mineral admixtures was bigger than that of plain concrete.

  • The purpose of this study is to predict the cracking behavior and suggest the method of controlling the cracking in concrete box culvert for power transmission due to differential drying shrinkage. Drying shrinkage cracking is mainly influenced by the moisture diffusion coefficient that determines moisture diffusion rate inside concrete structures. In addition to the diffusion coefficient, surface coefficient of concrete surface and relative humidity of ambient air simultaneously affect the moisture evaporation from concrete inside to external air outside. Within the framework of drying shrinkage cracking mechanism, it is necessary to perform the numerical analysis, which involves these three influencing factors to predict and control the shrinkage cracking of concrete. In this study, moisture diffusion and stress analysis cor responding to drying shrinkage on concrete box culvert are performed with consideration of diffusion coefficient, surface coefficient, and relative humidity of ambient air. From the numerical results, it is found that cracking behavior due to differential drying shrinkage of box culvert shows the different feature according to three influencing factors and the methodology of controlling of drying shrinkage cracks can be suggested from this study.

  • The porosity in porous media like concrete can be considered as a durability index since it may be a routine for the intrusion of harmful ions and room for the keeping moisture. Recently, modeling and analysis techniques for deterioration are provided based on the pore structure with the significance of durability and the relationship between porosity and durability characteristics is an important issue. In this paper, a series of mortar samples with five water to cement ratios are prepared and tests for durability performance are carried out including porosity measurement. The durability test covers those for compressive strength, air permeability, chloride diffusion coefficient, absorption, and moisture diffusion coefficient. They are compared with water to cement ratios and porosity. From the normalized data, when porosity increases to 1.45 times, air permeability, chloride diffusion coefficient, absorption, and moisture diffusion coefficient decrease to 2.3 times, 2.1 times, 5.5 times and 3.7 times, respectively, while compressive strength decreases to 0.6 times. It was evaluated that these are linearly changed with porosity showing high corelation factors. Additionally, intended durability performances are established from the test results and literature studies and a porosity for durable concrete is proposed based on them.

  • The diffusivity of carbon dioxide in concrete is very important in that it directly affects the degree of carbonation in concrete structures. The purpose of the present study is to explore the diffusivity of carbon dioxide and to derive a realistic equation to estimate the diffusion coefficient of carbon dioxide in concrete. For this purpose, several series of concrete specimens have been tested. Major test variables were the water-cement ratios. The total porosities and the diffusion coefficients of carbon dioxide were measured for the specimens. The present study indicates that the measured porosities agree well with the calculated ones. The effects of porosity and relative humidity on the diffusion coefficient of carbon dioxide were examined. A prediction equation to estimate the diffusion coefficient of carbon dioxide was derived and proposed in this study. The proposed equation shows reasonably good correlation with test data on the $CO_2$ diffusion coefficient of concrete

  • Generally, durability of concrete structures under marine environment is grossly declined by detrimental ions such as chlorides, which penetrate concrete and was diffused to corrode reinforcing rod. Therefore, chloride diffusion properties in concrete are important for durability evaluation and design of concrete structure. For estimation of chloride diffusion coefficient in concrete, both evaluation methods are used for steady state and non-steady state derived from Fick's 1st and 2nd law, respectively. However, as it is very difficult to evaluate diffusion coefficient for non-steady state like service environment where concrete is actually exposed, indirect evaluation method by laboratory accelerated test is generally used. In this study, comparison of chloride diffusion behavior was investigated for fixed mix proportion and age of concrete using four accelerated test methods based on domestic and foreign standards. From test results, only relative comparison between concrete mixtures was possible using ASTM C 1202 test, and diffusion coefficient for steady state was estimated as low as 1/10 of that for non-steady state. In addition, diffusion coefficient estimated by immersion test was similar to result by NT build 492 test.

  • Cement hydrates and the related characteristics change with ages, and the behaviors are much related with chloride diffusion. In this work, 30% replacement ratio with FA(Fly Ash) and GGBFS(Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) are considered for concrete with three levels of W/B (Water to Binder ratio) and 2 years of curing period. Chloride diffusion coefficients from accelerated condition are obtained at 5 measurement period (28days, 56days, 180days, 365days, and 730days), and the results are compared with porosity, binding capacity, and permeability from program-DUCOM. The similar changing pattern between chloride diffusion and permeability is observed since permeability is proportional to the square of porosity. Curing period is grouped into 4 periods and the changing ratios are investigated. Cement hydrate characteristics such as porosity, permeability, and diffusion coefficient are dominantly changed at the early ages (28~56 days), and diffusion coefficient in OPC concrete with low W/B continuously changes to 180days.
