  • Using a Shack-Hartmann sensor and sub-wavelength sized pinhole point source, we develope an optical testing system that measures the wavefront error of high numerical aperture and small sized optical components. The subwavelength sized pinhole generates perfect spherical waves with large diffraction angle and this makes possible to test high numerical aperture optics. The Shack-Hartmann sensor reconstructs the wavefront and calculates the aberrations. We make a home-made reference plane wave source which generates nearly perfect plane waves and the calibration with this plane source gives the overall uncertainty of the optical testing system 0.010 $\lambda$ rms.

  • Experimental studies are conducted for the wave forces acting on the vertically mounted circular piles in the waves. Two-three-cylinder arrays are equally spaced and the spacings(S/D) as well as the incident angles of various waves are changed to study their separate effects on the wave forces. The numerical results based on the diffraction theory are in good agreement with the experimental results, and the diffraction theory well predicts the trend of the wave forces when the spacings and the incident angles are changed.

  • In this paper, the wave and current forces acting on cylinders are investigated by theoretical and experimental methods. The models used are one-cylinder, four-cylinder and semi-submersible types. The theoretical investigations are carried out by the Morison equation and three dimensional source distribution method to calculate exciting forces in waves with and without currents. The experimental investigations are carried out in the wave tank which can generate currents in both directions. In these tests, the models have been exposed to the regular waves with and without currents. It is shown that the exciting forces acting on the one-cylinder or four-cylinders can be approximately estimated by the Morison equation and also by the diffraction theory. However, the Morison equation seems to be not appropriate to estimate the exciting forces on the present type of semi-submersible.

  • In this study, we investigated wave force distribution at points on a vertical structure of semi-infinite breakwater considering diffraction. Wave forces of monochromatic and random waves on a vertical structure are studied considering diffractions in front and lee side of the breakwater for non-breaking wave condition. We selected width of breakwater are 0 for reference condition. In monochromatic wave case, relative wave force becomes 0 on the head of the breakwater by acting incident wave force and diffracting wave force simultaneously and oscillating patterns of relative wave force occurs based on 1.0 as distance from the head increases. Relative wave force of monochromatic waves decreases as incident wave angle increases. Relative wave force of random waves is defined by using ratio of root mean square and wave force spectrum in this study. The case considering random phase of each wave components are compared to the case which don't consider random phase and both results are almost similar. Relative wave force of random waves is also 0 near the head of the breakwater likewise monochromatic wave. Oscillating pattern of relative wave force of random waves becomes relatively weaker for composition of each wave components as distance from the head increases.

  • The purpose of this study is to review and overcome the limits of the existing design wave model applied to such waters as those located inside bays or near islands where the impact of wind influenced waves are more dominant, due to the nature of topographic isolation, than the influence of direct waves coming from the open sea. Although the existing model for an inside bay design wave is excellent for considering wind factors and very adaptable to topographically complicated areas compared to other models, it is difficult to show the wave diffractions and reflections caused by large scale structures or topographic features in the region. The study examined the various methods capable of taking into account wave diffraction, the angle of wave reflection, and changes in water depth. As a result of applying the modified design wave model to the target situation (inside bay or near island areas), it was found that the reliability of the design wave height around marine structures was improved, compared to the existing models. Therefore, it is fair to predict that the new model could provide more accurate design waves in the design of marine structures.

  • The interaction of incident monochromatic waves with a tensioned, flexible, circular membrane submerged horizontally below free surface is investigated in the frame of three-dimensional linear hydro-elastic theory. The velocity potential is split into two parts i.e. the diffraction potential representing the scattering of incident waves by a rigid circular disk and the radiation potential describing motion induced waves by elastic responses of flexible membrane. The fluid domain is divided into three regions, and the diffraction and radiation potentials in each region are expressed by the Fourier Bessel series. The displacement of circular membrane is expanded with a set of natural functions, which satisfy the membrane equation of motion and boundary conditions. The unknown coefficients in each region are determined by applying the continuity of pressure and normal velocity at the matching boundaries. The results show that various types of wave focusing are possible by controlling the size, submergence depth, and tension of membrane.

  • An asymptotic solution of electromagnetic waves scattered by a right-angled dielectric wedge for plane wave incidence is obtained. Scattered fields are constructed by waves reflected and refracted from dielectric interfaces (geometric-optical fields) and a cylindrical wave diffracted from the edge. The edge diffracted field is obtained by adding a correction to the edge diffraction of physical optics approximation, where the correction field is calculated by solving a dual series equation amenable to simple numerical calculation. Validity of this result is assured by two limits of relative dielectric constant $\varepsilon$ of the wedge. The total asymptotic field calculated results in a Rawlins' Neumann series solution for small $\varepsilon$, and the edge diffraction pattern is shown to approach that of a perfectly conducting wedge for large $\varepsilon$. Calculated field patterns are presented and the accuracy of physical optics approximation is discussed.

  • We have developed a laser ultrasonic system for visualization of elastic waves propagating on a solid surface, in order to visualize ultrasonic waves propagating on opaque media. This system can produce a series of successive images as an animation of wave propagation, because of scanning an optical heterodyne probe to measure surface transient displacements. Using this visualization technique, we observed the scattering and diffraction of ultrasonic waves around various shapes of artificial defects, and examined its application to nondestructive inspection. This imaging system provides various kinds of visualization images such as propagation image, amplitude image, arrival time image and velocity image. We have been confident that this technique is available for nondestructive inspection and materials ...
