$Mn_3O_4$/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites are prepared by chemically synthesizing $Mn_3O_4$ nanoparticles on a MWCNT film at room temperature. Structural and morphological characterization has been carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning and transmission electron microscopies (SEM and TEM). These reveal that polycrystalline $Mn_3O_4$ nanoparticles, with sizes of about 10-20 nm, aggregate to form larger nanoparticles (50-200 nm), and the $Mn_3O_4$ nanoparticles are attached inhomogeneously on MWCNTs. The electrochemical behavior of the composites is analyzed by cyclic voltammetry experiment. The $Mn_3O_4$/MWCNT composite exhibits a specific capacitance of $257Fg^{-1}$ at a scan rate of $5mVs^{-1}$, which is about 3.5 times higher than that of the pure $Mn_3O_4$. Cycle-life tests show that the specific capacitance of the $Mn_3O_4$/MWCNT composite is stable up to 1000 cycles with about 85% capacitance retention, which is better than the pure $Mn_3O_4$ electrode. The improved supercapacitive performance of the $Mn_3O_4$/MWCNT composite electrode can be attributed to the synergistic effects of the $Mn_3O_4$ nanoparticles and the MWCNTs, which arises not only from the combination of pseudocapacitance from $Mn_3O_4$ nanoparticles and electric double layer capacitance from the MWCNTs but also from the increased surface area, pore volume and conducting property of the MWCNT network.
When aiming for an increased and more sustainable use of metals a thorough knowledge of the corrosion phenomenon as function of the local metal microstructure is of crucial importance. In this work, we summarize the information presented in our previous publications[1-3] and present an overview of the different local (electrochemical) techniques that have been proven to be effective in studying the relation between different microstructural variables and their different electrochemical behavior. Atomic force microscopy (AFM)[1], scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM)[2], and electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM)[3] were used in combination with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Consequently, correlations could be identified between the grain orientation and grain boundary characteristics, on the one hand, and the electrochemical behavior on the other hand. The grain orientation itself has an influence on the corrosion, and the orientation of the neighboring grains also seems to play a decisive role in the dissolution rate. With respect to intergranular corrosion, only coherent twin boundaries seem to be resistant.
Mn-substituted $BiFeO_3$(BFO) thin films were prepared by r.f. magnetron sputtering under an Ar/$O_2$ mixture of various deposition pressures at room temperature. The effects of the deposition pressure and annealing temperature on the crystallization and electrical properties of BFO films were investigated. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that BFO films were crystallized for films annealed above $500^{\circ}C$. BFO films annealed at $550^{\circ}C$ for 5 min in $N_2$ atmosphere exhibited the crystallized perovskite phase. The (Fe+Mn)/Bi ratio decreased with an increase in the deposition pressure due to the difference of sputtering yield. The grain size and surface roughness of films increased with an increase in the deposition pressure. The dielectric constant of BFO films prepared at various conditions shows $127{\sim}187$ at 1 kHz. The leakage current density of BFO films annealed at $500^{\circ}C$ was approximately two orders of magnitude lower than that of $550^{\circ}C$. The leakage current density of the BFO films deposited at $10{\sim}30\;m$ Torr was about $5{\times}10^{-6}{\sim}3{\times}10^{-2}A/cm^2$ at 100 kV/cm. Due to the high leakage current, saturated P-E curves were not obtained in BFO films. BFO film annealed at $500^{\circ}C$ exhibited remnant polarization(2Pr) of $26.4{\mu}C/cm^2$ at 470 kV/cm.
We have studied effects of annular phase apodizer and bump shapes on the read-out signal in an optical disc system, using scalar diffraction theory. In order to detennine the optimum parameters of annular phase apodizer which will minimize the influence of spherical aberration, we defined WR as the ratio between the maximum wavefront aberration and some absolute value of wavefront aberration at any position r in the pupil. A cylindric bump, a semi-conic bump and a conic bump were$.$ also considered as different types of bump shape. As the radius and shape of bump varies, the read-out signal from an optical disc system with an annular phase apodizer was similar to that from an optical disc system without apodizer. When spherical aberration increases, the maximum read-out signal of an optical disc system with an annular phase apodizer and minimum bump radii giving read-out signal higher than 0.6 rarely varied. Especially, the optimum parameters at $W_R$ = 0.4 , 0.6 gave the most compensated effect of a spherical aberration.ration.
We have studied about spatial wavefront analysis of a pulsed laser output beam by means of an imaging unstable ring resonator with an infinite Fresnel number. We have constructed a Newtonian telescope type NBUR (Negative Branch Unstable Ring) Nd:YAG laser with 4 plane mirrors. Provided that the NBUR resonator is under self imaging condition, the resonator could be reduced diffraction effects which were occuring to the beam transmitting through the circular aperture of scraper mirror in the resonator. We have observed enhancement in the spatial coherence of wavefronts of laser beam due to the iterative round trips of the self imaging beam inside the ring resonator. The information on the spatial wavefronts was determined by the fringe patterns from Mach-Zehnder interferometer and the fringe analysis by means of the Fourier transform method showed the distortion of wavefronts of less than 0.2), In comparison with a standing wave type resonator, we have confirmed that the spatial coherence of the NBUR Nd:YAG laser output beam was enhanced as much as 75%. s 75%.

The structural and optical properties of the ZnO, Al-doped ZnO, Ga-doped ZnO, and In-doped ZnO nanorods were investigated using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence (PL) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. All the nanorods grew with good alignment on the ZnO seed layers and the ZnO nanorod dimensions could be controlled by the addition of the various dopants. For instance, the diameter of the nanorods decreased with increasing atomic number of the dopants. The ratio between the near-band-edge emission (NBE) and the deep-level emission (DLE) intensities ($I_{NBE}/I_{DLE}$) obtained by PL gradually decreased because the DLE intensity from the nanorods gradually increased with increase in the atomic number of the dopants. We found that the dopants affected the structural and optical properties of the ZnO nanorods including their dimensions, lattice constants, residual stresses, bond lengths, PL properties, transmittance values, optical band gaps, and Urbach energies.
In this study, activated carbon (AC) as a carbon source was modified with different concentrations of cobalt chloride ($CoCl_2$) to prepare a Co-AC composite, and it was used for the preparation of Co-AC/$TiO_2$ composites with titanium oxysulfate (TOS) as the titanium precursor. The physicochemical properties of the prepared Co-AC/$TiO_2$ composites were characterized by $N_2$ adsorption at 77 K, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The photocatalytic treatments of organic dyes were examined under an irradiation of visible light with different irradiation times. $N_2$ adsorption data showed that the composites had decreased surface area compared with the pristine AC, which was $389\;m^2/g$. From the XRD results, the Co-AC/$TiO_2$ composites contained a mixturephase structuresof anatase and rutile, but a cobalt oxide phase was not detected in the XRD pattern. The EDX results of the Co-AC/$TiO_2$ composites confirmed the presence of various elements, namely, C, O, Ti, and Co. Subsequently, the decomposition of methylene orange (MO, $C_{14}H_{14}N_3NaO_3S$) and rhodamine B (Rh.B, $C_{28}H_{31}ClN_2O_3$) in an aqueous solution, respectively, showed the combined effects of an adsorption effect by AC and the photo degradation effect by $TiO_2$. Especially, the Co particles in the Co-AC/$TiO_2$ composites could enhance the photo degradation behaviors of $TiO_2$ under visible light.
The effects of the substrate temperature and the Pd underlayer on the structure and the magnetic properties of Pd/Co multilayer films prepared by the thermal evaporation were studied. As the substrate temperature increases up to $150^{\circ}C$, the crystallinity of sublayers, (111) texture and the interface sharpness of Pd/Co multilayers were improved due to the enhanced mobility of adatoms. As results of that, the perpendicular and surface anisotropy energies were increased but the coercivity was decreased because the pinning sites of domain wall decreased due to the grain growth. The grain size of the multilayers increased with Pd underlyer thickness. Thermal degradation was enhanced at above $200^{\circ}C$ due to interdiffusion at the Pd/Co interface. The intensity of the main diffraction peak rapidly decayed in the initial stage of aging and then decreased slowly. The rapid change of the intensity in the initial stage was speculated to be due to the structural relaxation phenomena and the later stage change was due to the interdiffusion. The activation energy for the interdiffusion in Pd4/Co1 multilayers was 14.9 KCal/mole.K.
Composites of P25 $TiO_2$ and hexagonal $WO_3$ nanorods are synthesized through ball-milling in order to study photocatalytic properties. Various composites of $TiO_2/WO_3$ are prepared by controlling the weight percentages (wt%) of $WO_3$, in the range of 1-30 wt%, and milling time to investigate the effects of the composition ratio on the photocatalytic properties. Scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy are performed to characterize the structure, shape and size of the synthesized composites of $TiO_2/WO_3$. Methylene blue is used as a test dye to analyze the photocatalytic properties of the synthesized composite material. The photocatalytic activity shows that the decomposition efficiency of the dye due to the photocatalytic effect is the highest in the $TiO_2/WO_3$ (3 wt%) composite, and the catalytic efficiency decreases sharply when the amount of $WO_3$ is further increased. As the amount of $WO_3$ added increases, dye-removal by adsorption occurs during centrifugation, instead of the decomposition of dyes by photocatalysts. Finally, $TiO_2/WO_3$ (3 wt%) composites are synthesized with various milling times. Experimental results show that the milling time has the best catalytic efficiency at 30 min, after which it gradually decreases. There is no significant change after 1 hour.
Native crystalline chitin was hydrolyzed in an agitated bead reaction system using crude chitinase excreted from Aspergillus fumigatus JC-19. The reaction was enhanced significantly, and the concentration and yield of reducing sugar after 48 hours were measured to be 35.42 g/I (w/v) and 0.64, respectively, around 1.86 times higher than those of the conventional system that was carried out without glass beads. The effect of reaction conditions, such as the amounts of chitin, chitinase and glass beads, and the size of glass bead, were examined. Ball milled chitin was also hydrolyzed in the agitated bead reaction system, the conversion yield and reaction rate of ball milled chitin for 24 hours increased up to 0.87 and 48.02 g/I, respectively. Chitinase showed relatively high stability in the agitated bead reaction system, particularly in the presence of enzyme stabilizer, $Ca^{++}$, which played a critical role in preventing the deactivation of chitinase by the physical impact of glass beads. The variations of the structural features of chitin during the reaction were followed by SEM and X-ray diffraction, and the enhanced hydrolysis reaction was caused by both the fragmentation of chitin particles and the destruction of the crystalline structure owing to the synergic effects of the attrition of glass beads and the hydrolytic action of chitinase.
