  • The microstructural evolution with isothermal stirring during semi-solid state processing of hypoeutectic Al-6.2wt%Si alloy was studied. Substructure of the individual primary solid particle in the slurry was investigated through transmission electron microscopy(TEM). Formation of subgrain boundaries on the rheocast Al-6.2wt%Si alloy is observed and the misorientation between the grains is shown typically under 2 degrees by analyzing selected area diffraction (SAD) and convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) patterns. The existence of high angle grain boundaries are also observed in the alloy. Based upon these observations, mechanisms for the primary particles fragmentation are considered. With isothermal stirring, the dislocation density increases, and the evolution of dislocation cell structure takes place, which is interpreted as a process of achieving uniform deformation by dynamic recovery under applied shear stress.

  • We have synthesized poly(l,4-cyclohexylenedimethylene terephthalate-co-hexamethylene terephthalate) [P(CT-co-HT)] random copolymers having various comonomer contents, from 0 to 100 mol% HT, by melt-condensation and have investigated their crystallization behavior by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). We observed that P(CT-co-HT)s exhibit clear melting and crystallization peaks in their DSC thermograms and sharp diffraction peaks in their WAXD patterns for all of their copolymer compositions as a result of cocrystallization of the CT and HT units, even though the copolymers are statistically random copolymers. When we plotted the melting and crystallization temperatures of P(CT-co-HT)s and the d-spacings of all the reflections against the copolymer composition, we observed a eutectic point at ca. 80 mol% HT, which suggests that a crystal transition occured from a PCT-type crystal to a PHT-type crystal. Both the DSC and WAXD results support the notion that P(CT-co-HT) copolymers undergo an isodimorphic cocrystallization.

  • The crystal structure of diflunisal, 2',4'-difluoro-4-hydroxy-3-biphenyl-carboxylic acid, was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction technique. The compound was recrystallized from a mixture of acetone and water in monoclinic, space group C2/c, with $a\;=\;34.666(6),\;b\;=\;3.743(1),\;c\;=\;20.737(4)\;{\AA},\;{\beta}=\;110.57(2)^{\circ}$, and Z = 8. The calculated density is $1.324\;g/cm^3$. The structure was solved by the direct method and refined by full matrix least-squares procedure to the final R value of 0.045 for 1299 observed reflections. It was found that the molecules in the crystal are partially disordered, that is, the two equivalent conformers $(180^{\circ}$ rotated ones through C(1)-C(7)) are packed alternatively without regular symmetry or sequence. The two phenyl rings of the biphenyl group is tilted to each other by the dihedral angle of $43.3^{\circ}$. The carboxyl group at the salicylic moiety is just coplanar to the phenyl ring, and the planarity of this salicylic moiety is stabilized by an intramolecular hydrogen bond of O(3)-H(O3) O(2). The molecules are dimerized through the intermolecular hydrogen bonds at the carboxyl group in the crystal.

  • The friction welding characteristics of stainless steels, mainly used in energy and chemical plant industries due to its excellent corrosion resistance and high strength, was evaluated in this study. Friction welding was introduced and conducted at a rotation speed of 2,000 RPM, friction pressure of 30 MPa, burn-off length of 5 mm and upset pressure of 110 ~ 200 MPa on rod typed specimens. The grain boundary characteristics distributions such a grain size, shape, misorientation angle and kernel average misorientation of the welds were clarified by electron backscattering diffraction method. The application of friction welding on SUS304 alloy resulted in a significant refinement of the grain size in the weld zone (5.11 mm) compared to that of the base material (48.09 mm). The mechanical properties of the welds, on the other hand, appeared to be relatively low or similar to those of the base material, which were mainly caused by dislocation density in the initial material and grain refinement in the welds.

  • In this study, the InGaP epilayers were grown on the exact and the $2^{\circ}$, $6^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$ of cut GaAs substrates by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy, and the effects of interfacial elastic strains determined by the substrate offcut angle upon the resulting dislocation density of epilayer were investigated for the first time. The elastic strains were obtained from lattice mismatch and lattice misfit by TXRD, and the dislocation densities from epilayer x-ray FWHM. For the offcut angle range used in this study, the elastic strain was maximum and x-ray FWHM minimum at offcut angle $6^{\circ}$. From 11K PL measurements, PL wavelength was found to decrease with an increase of offcut angle. PL intensity was maximum at offcut angle $6^{\circ}$. TEM results showed that the electron diffraction pattern was of typical zincblende structure, and that the dislocation density was minimum for substrate offcut angle $6^{\circ}$. The results obtained in this study, along with the device fabrication process and beam characteristics, clearly demonstrated that the optimum substrate offcut angle for the InGaP/GaAs heterostructures is $6^{\circ}$.

  • Single phase $CuInS_2$ thin film with a highest diffraction peak (112) at a diffraction angle ($2{\theta}$) of 27.7$^{\circ}$ was well made by SEL method at annealing temperature of 250 $^{\circ}C$ and annealing hour of 60 min in vacuum of $10^{-3}$ Torr or in S ambience for an hour. And the peak of diffraction intensity at miller index (112) of $CuInS_2$ thin film annealed in S ambience was shown a little higher about 11 % than in only vacuum. Single phase $CuInS_2$ thin films were appeared from 0.85 to 1.26 of Cu/In composition ratio and sulfur composition ratios of $CuInS_2$ thin films fabricated in S ambience were all over 50 atom%. Also when Cu/In composition ratio was 1.03, $CuInS_2$ thin film with chalcopyrite structure had the highest XRD peak (112). And lattice constant a and grain size of the thin film in S ambience were appeared a little larger than those in only vacuum. The largest lattice constant of a and grain size of $CuInS_2$ thin film in S ambience was 5.63 ${\AA}$ and 1.2 ${\mu}$m respectively. And the films in S ambience were all p-conduction type with resistivities of around $10^{-1}{\Omega}cm$.

  • The purpose of this study is to observe the applicability of parabolic mild-slope equations allowing relatively large angles of wave propagation based on the use of a Pade approximant or minimax approximation and also the applicability of the models with nonlinearity of diffracted waves in the shadow zone behind coastal structures. To accomplish these objectives, numerical solutions are obtained from the above parabolic models and are compared with the results from Watanabe and Maruyama's(1984) hydraulic model test on the wave field with an impermeable detached breakwater. From this study, it is found that computed wave heights increase for the nonlinear results in comparison to the linear results due to the increased diffraction effect across the geometric shadow boundary. The model with a larger aperture with respect to the principal direction was found to spread laterally to a much greater degree where spreading angle (diffraction effect) is relatively large. which causes a distortion in the overall results due to the error accumulated by the approximation of wave length.

  • An asymptotic solution of electromagnetic waves scattered by a right-angled dielectric wedge for plane wave incidence is obtained. Scattered fields are constructed by waves reflected and refracted from dielectric interfaces (geometric-optical fields) and a cylindrical wave diffracted from the edge. The edge diffracted field is obtained by adding a correction to the edge diffraction of physical optics approximation, where the correction field is calculated by solving a dual series equation amenable to simple numerical calculation. Validity of this result is assured by two limits of relative dielectric constant $\varepsilon$ of the wedge. The total asymptotic field calculated results in a Rawlins' Neumann series solution for small $\varepsilon$, and the edge diffraction pattern is shown to approach that of a perfectly conducting wedge for large $\varepsilon$. Calculated field patterns are presented and the accuracy of physical optics approximation is discussed.

  • In this study, the compressive strength and water contact angle were measured before and after surface abrasion of mortar specimens prepared by mixing two types of water repellents and two types of sands. In addition, the hydration products and chemical bonding of cement mortar by repellent were examined using X-ray diffraction(XRD), thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis(TG-DTA), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) to evaluate the performance of these cement mortar mixtures as repair materials. We found that the compressive strength of the cement mortar with water repellent added was decreased compared to that of the plain cement mortar, and that of the oligomeric system was higher than that of the monomeric system. We further found that the contact angle of mortar with water repellent added was increased compared to that of the plain cement mortar, and that of the oligomeric system was increased compared to that of the monomer.
