  • The aim of this study was to establish the method of differential diagnosis between developing and regressing corpus luteum in cows. Plasma progesterone (P$_4$) concentrations were determined by radioimmunoassay in slaughtered, cycling and pregnant cows. Ultrasonography was used to measure the corpus luteum size and histogram values for determining the correlationships between corpus luteum area or histogram values and plasma P$_4$ concentrations. The corpora lutea were monitored in vitro (water-bath scanning) by using ultrasonography with 7.5 MHz linear-array transducer in 196 slaughtered cows. The correlation coefficient between corpus luteum area and plasma P$_4$ concentrations was 0.46 (p<0.01), and between histogram values and plasma P$_4$ concentrations was -0.44 (p<0.01), respectively. The corpora lutea were monitored by ultrasonography with 5.0 MHz linear-array transrectal transducer in 188 cycling and 30 pregnant cows. The corpus luteum areas and plasma P4 concentrations were significantly different between regressing and other corpora lutea (p<0.01), and also histogram values were significantly different between regressing and developing corpola lutea (p<0.01). The correlation coefficients between corpus luteum areas and plasma P$_4$ concentrations were 0.76 (p<0.01), 0.71 (p<0.01), 0.65 (p<0.05) and 0.68 (p<0.05), and between histogram values and plasma P$_4$ concentrations were 0.74 (p<0.05), 0.71 (p<0.01), -0.52 (p<0.05) and 0.65 (p<0.05) in developing, functional, regressing and pregnant corpora lutea, respectively. These results indicate that corpus luteum areas and plasma P$_4$ concentrations were highly correlated in all stages of corpus luteum. The histogram values and plasma P$_4$ concentrations were positive correlated in developing, functional and pregnant corpora lutea, but negative correlated in regressing corpus luteum. Therefore, the measurement of corpus luteum area and histogram value by ultrasonography is reliable method for the assessment of luteal function, specially developing and regressing corpus luteum.

  • In case of contrast of the image enhancement by using the conventional histogram equalization, over-enhancement, false contouring and distortion such as the details disappearance of the image occurs due to the excessive brightness change. Especially, these distortion appears when the brightness distribution is concentrated in a particular brightness level. In order to solve these problems, improved histogram equalization methods to transform the input histogram by clipping using threshold have been proposed, but contrast enhancement effect is reduced because it does not consider the characteristics of the input image's histogram to apply the same threshold for the entire histogram, and unnatural image is obtained because it does not retain the characteristics of the image. In this paper, to solve the problems of existing methods, we propose new equalization method that suppress excessive brightness changes by applying to the differential compression according to the histogram frequency, and maintain the characteristics of the input image. In addition, we propose a more effectively method to improve contrast by controlling the strength of the compression ratio depending on the characteristics of the input image.

  • A typical histogram equalization contrast enhancement effect for improving the image quality is excellent. However, because it appears that excessive changes of the brightness values, The average brightness of the image is changing in units of frames of applications such as a TV video is unsuitable. In order to solve these drawbacks, a modified method of histogram equalization on various studies have been made. But the result images of existing methods sometimes shown visual degradations such as over-enhancement and false contouring. In this paper, we propose improved contrast enhancement method through bi-histogram equalization using target mean brightness based on differential compression method. The proposed method is based on the average brightness value by dividing the histogram, the histogram for each zone, according to the frequency differential of compression. And equalize the modified histogram based on target mean brightness. This allows to suppress deterioration of picture quality, and changes in the average brightness of each frame of video, while maintaining and improving the contrast. Experimental results show that the proposed method compared to the conventional method, the average brightness of each frame from a movie well maintained, and no degradation of the image quality showed a good effect to improve the contrast.

  • In this paper, a new analytic approach for shape preserving contrast enhancement is presented. Contrast enhancement is achieved by means of segmental histogram stretching modification which preserves the given image shape, not distorting the original shape. After global stretching, the image is partitioned into several level-sets according to threshold condition. The image information of each level-set is represented as typical value based on grouped differential values. The basic property is modified into common local schemes, thereby introducing the enhanced effect through extreme discrimination between subsets. The scheme is based on stretching the histogram of subsets in which the intensity gray levels between connected pixels are approximately same In spite of histogram widening, stretched by local image information, it neither creates nor destroys the original image, thereby preserving image shape and enhancing the contrast. By designing local histogram stretching operations, we can preserve the original shape of level-sets of the image, and also enhance the global intensity. Thus it can hold the main properties of both global and local image schemes, which leads to versatile applications in the field of digital epigraphy.

  • Reversible watermarking inserts watermark into digital media in such a way that visual transparency is preserved and then enables to restore the original media from the marked one without any loss of media quality. This watermarking can be applied to quality-sensitive imaging such as medical imaging, military imaging, remote-sensing imaging, and precious artwork, where the original media should be preserved during image processing and analysis. In this paper, a reversible image watermarking technique that embeds message bits by modifying the differential histogram of adjacent pixels is presented. In order to satisfy both high embedding capacity and visual quality, the proposed technique exploits the fact that adjacent pixels in the image have highly spatial correlation. Also, we prevent overflow/underflow problem and salt-and-pepper artifacts by employing a predicted error compensation scheme. Through experiments using various test images, we prove that the presented technique provides perfect reversibility and high embedding capacity, while maintaining the induced-distortion low.

  • Reversible watermarking inserts watermark into digital media in such a way that visual transparency is preserved, which enables the restoration of the original media from the watermarked one without any loss of media quality. It has various applications, where high capacity and high visual quality are major requirements. This paper presents a new effective multi-round embedding scheme for the differential histogram-based reversible watermarking that satisfies high capacity requirements of the application. The proposed technique exploits the row-column cross scanning to fully utilize the locality of images when multi-round embedding phase to the message inserted image. Through experiments using multiple kinds of test images, we prove that the presented algorithm provides 100% reversibility, effectiveness of multi-round embedding, and higher visual quality, while maintaining the induced-distortion low.

  • Difference image scheme is widely used for motion estimation in moving object tracking system. This scheme contains a binarization step which segments image into background and moving object regions, referring to threshold value. In this paper, we propose a decision algorithm of tracking the threshold value with a differential image. The key idea is analyzing the histogram of the differential image. In addition we evaluate the performance of this method in comparison with conventional scheme. As an experimental result with 60 images, it is found that threshold by the proposed algorithm is very close to optimal threshold selected manually.

  • In recent yeas, studies on computer aided diagnosis (CAD) using image analysis on CT images have been conducted with respect to various diseases. Extracting ground-glass opacities (GGO) on lung CT images is one of such subjects, though it has not found an established method yet. If the region of ground-glass opacities is large on CT images, it can be detected without much difficulty. On the other hand, if the region is small, it is still difficult to find it exactly. In the latter case, increasing overlooking possibility cannot be avoided according to smaller size of the region. To solve this difficulty, this paper proposes an automatic technique for extracting ground-glass opacities on lung CT images employing some statistical parameters of a gray level histogram and a differential histogram. The proposed technique is applied to some lung CT images in the performed experiment. The results are shown with discussion on future work.

  • In most applications requiring high-confidential images, reversible watermarking is an effective way to ensure the integrity of images. Many watermarking researches which have been adapted to authenticate contents cannot recover the original image after authentication. However, reversible watermarking inserts the watermark signal into digital contents in such a way that the original contents can be restored without any quality loss while preserving visual quality. To detect malicious tampering, this paper presents a new block-based image authentication algorithm using differential histogram-based reversible watermarking. To generate an authentication code, the DCT-based authentication feature from each image block is extracted and combined with user-specific code. Then, the authentication code is embedded into image itself with reversible watermarking. The image can be authenticated by comparing the extracted code and the newly generated code and restored into the original image. Through experiments using multiple images, we prove that the presented algorithm has achieved over 97% authentication rate with high visual quality and complete reversibility.

  • In this study, fur the shape-based image retrieval, a method using local differential invariants is proposed. This method calculates the differential invariant feature vector at every feature point extracted by Harris comer point detector. Then through vector quantization using LBG algorithm, all feature vectors are represented by a codebook index. All images are indexed by the histogram of codebook index, and by comparing the histograms the similarity between images is obtained. The proposed method is compared with the existing method by performing experiments for image database including various 1100 trademarks.
