This study was undertaken to investigate effects of alcohol and dietary protein levels on serum lipids and enzyme activities in 15 week-old male rats given a normal diet. Rats were divided into 8 groups : control group (16% protein 16PC) and 8%(8PE) 16%(16PE) and 24% protein groups(24PE) to which was given 5% ethanol mixed into their drinking water after 4 weeks and 10 weeks. Body weight organ weight and various blood components were determined at 4 and 10 weeks. Body weight gain organ weight hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit value were not influenced by ethanol and dietary protein levels. The levels of total cholesterol HDL-cholesterol and phospholipid in serum were not affected by ethanol consumption. Serum triglyceride concen-trations after 10 weeks were significnatly increased ethanol-treated group compared with that of control group and the effect was greater in low protein group than control group. Serum ALP activity was significantly higher in 8PE group than other group but there was no influence by ethanol consumption.

mechanisms for the hypocholesterolemic effects of $\beta$-glucan remain unclear. Rats were divided into 3 groups ; normal control group, atherogenic group(oral administration of cholesterol 40 mg/kg/day plus vit. $D_2$ 320,000 IU/kg/day), $\beta$-glucan treatment group(atherogenic treatment plus $\beta$-glucan 0.135 g/kg/day). The $\beta$-glucan treatment group showed moderate increases of serum lipids concentration compared with atherogenic group. In histopathological examination, aortas showed no critical lesions. The total fecal neutral sterols and bile acids excreted for 6 days was increased compared with both normal and atherogenic group. To compare effects of soluble fiber and insoluble fiber extracted from barley on postprandial lipemia, 5 healthy male adults ingested on separate days a low-fiber(total dietary fiber 2.61g) control meal or dietary fiber-enriched(12.61g) meals. Fasting and postprandial blood samples were obtained for 6.5h and serum lipids were analyzed. The serum total lipids, total cholesterols, LDL & VLDL-cholesterol were markedly reduced with soluble fiber-enriched meals, but no decrease with insoluble fiber-enriched meals. These results suggest that mechanisms for the hypocholesterolemic effect of $\beta$-glucan on rats were due to the inhibition of cholesterol absorption in the intestinal lumen and acceleration of cholesterol catabolism in the liver. And the soluble dietary fiber($\beta$-glucan) has the hypocholesterolemic effect by dropping serum LDL & VLDL-cholesterol in the clinical study.
This experiment was performed to investigate the effect of different dietary lipids on the risk factors of coronary vascular disease(CVD) in ovariectomized rats. female rats of Sprague-Dawley stram were divided into sham-operated(sham) and ovariectomized(ovx) groups and then each group was divided into a beef fallow group, a soy bean oil group and a fish oil group. After 16 weeks of feeding on experimental diets, animals were sacrificed and blood, liver, kidney and perirenal fat pad were obtained. Food intake and weight gain of fish oil group were significantly lower than other dietary lipid groups. food intake and weight gain tended to be higher in ovx groups than in sham groups. The weight Index(g/100g body weight) of liver and kidney was higher in the fish oil group than the other groups and weight index was lower in ovx groups compared to sham groups. The weight of the perirenal fat pad was the highest in the beef tallow group and the lowest in the fish oil group. The fish oil group showed the lowest total cholesterol(TC) and triglyceride (TG) levels in serum. Serum TG levels were lower in all ovx groups than in sham groups, but serum TC levels were not influenced by ovariectomy. fatty acid composition of serum reflects the recent dietary Intake of fat. Linoleic acid content was tile highest in soy bean oil group and eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid(DHA) contents were the highest in fish oil group. fatty acid composition of adipose tissue, especially EPA and DHA contents in perirenal fat pad, was highest in the fish oil group. Saturated fatty acid(SFA) and monounsaturated fatty acid(MUFA) in serum and adipose tissue did not reflect fatty acid intake. The activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, a lipogenic enzyme, in the blood of the beef tallow and soybean oil groups showed the tendency to be high and that of the fish oil group to be low in ovx. Carnitine acetyltransferase, a lipolytic enzyme, showed the highest activity in the liver of the fish oil group and was least active in the soy bean oil group.
A variety of studies show that a centraized rather than a generalized pattern of subcutaneous fat distribution is more directly associated with disorers of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, as possibly hypertension, This study was an attempt to observe the relationship of body fat distribution, blood lipids, blood pressure and exercise in 85 healthy men and women. Within this group there was a gradation of fat distribution progressing from LBSO and UBSO defined on the basis of WHR. This paper reports the relationship of body fat distribution defined by WHR to plasma glucose, lipids, blood pressure, and exercise in this population. Although the obesity indices(RBW and BMI) were slightly higher in the UBSO group, significant differences existed between UBSO and LBSO groups with respect to WHR blood pressure, and total cholesterol concentration in female. WHR values were substantially different and this was primarily due to greater degrees of differences in waist as opposed to hips circum ference. Although no significant differences existed between UBSO and LBSO groups with respect to age, body weight, and hips circumference, energy intake, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and WHR values were substantially different in male. Positive, significant correlations were found between WHR and both systolic and diastolic blood pressure and between WHR and the total plasma cholesterol concentration and age. When 26 pairs of exercise and nonexercise groups were matched according to sex, age and body weight, blood pressure and blood lipids were significantly lower in the exercise groups than those in the nonexercise groups. In conclusion, these findings suggest that an altered blood lipid profiles will manifast in men and women with upper body obese. Furthermore these findings suggest that exercise and physical activity may be beneficial for controlling blood lipids and blood pressure in healthy adults.
The effect of feeding various diets on plasma lipids, liver lipids, fecal excretion of lipids and triglyceride secretion rate was studied in Sprague-Dawley rats fed for 1 month diets containing high fat(40% of energy ; HF) high cholesterol(1% ; HC), low fat/high sucrose(70% ; HS) or control diet(CT). Weight gain in HS group but there were no differences in TG contents of HF or HC groups compared to CT group. Fecal excretion of lipid was higher in HC than in HF, HS and CT groups. Hepatic TG secretion was not significantly different in four dietary groups. Accordingly, hypertriglyceridemia shown in HS group does not seem to be resulted from the increased TG secretion rate.

The dietary effects of soy fiber beni-koji(SBCA) containing chitosan-ascorbate on the body weight and serum lipids in obese rats induced by a high fat diet were investigated. The experimental plots(6 rats per each group) were divided into a normal group(NC), a high fat diet group(HF), a 1% SBCA diet group(SBCA1) and a 2% SBCA diet group(SBCA2), and fed for 6 weeks. Compared with the HF group, the mean body weight and the $R\'{o}hrer$ index of the SBCA1 and SBCA2 groups decreased by $3.4{\sim}7.4%$ and $8.1{\sim}13.9%$, respectively. In particular, the body lipids in the SBCA2 group decreased by 42.3%. The serum triglyceride content decreased by approximately $25.54{\sim}27.34%$ in the experimental diet groups. There was no significant difference in the serum total lipids between the HF and SBCA1 groups. On the other hand, the total lipids in SBCA2 group decreased by 19.12% compared with the HF group. In the SBCA2 group, the total serum cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol content decreased by 6.57% and 41.20% compared with the HF group, respectively, while the HDL-cholesterol increased by 10.0%. The risk factor index(RFI) in the SBCA2 group was decreased remarkably by 58.57%.
The purpose of this study was to investigate daily nutrient intakes, serum minerals and lipids in university students majoring in physical education. Anthropometric measurement, dietary survey, and blood analysis were conducted and compared between physical education major (PM) and other major (OM) students. Average age was 21.3 years for PM students and 20.8 years for OM students. Body weight and BMI of PM students were significantly higher than those of OM students (p<0.05). Systolic blood pressure of PM students was significantly lower than that of OM students (p<0.05). Daily energy intake was 2,047.4 kcal for PM students and 2,393.9 kcal for OM students, indicating a significant difference. Carbohydrate and vitamin B1 intakes of PM students were significantly lower than those of OM students. Serum calcium was significantly higher in PM students while serum phosphorus and magnesium levels were higher in OM students. Serum total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were significantly lower in PM students while HDL-cholesterol was lower in OM students. In conclusion, university students who major in physical education showed higher serum calcium, lower serum phosphorus and magnesium, and lower systolic blood pressure and serum cholesterol levels than other major students. These results show that physical activity as a major course of study is associated with decreased blood pressure and blood lipids as well as altered serum mineral levels.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the nutritional status of protein and lipids in the patients with alcoholic liver disease, to find an effective way of dietary management for patients with alcoholic liver disease and to obtain the materials for nutritional education for alcoholics. The subjects consist of 80 patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis(ALC) and 12 patients with alcoholic fatty liver(AFL). The control group included 57 alcoholics without liver disease(A), 32 patients with viral liver cir rhosis(VLC) and 194 normal(NL). Biochemical evaluation of nutritional status was performed by ana lyzing the profiles of protein and lipids in blood samples. The results are summarized as follows: 1) The frequency of subjects below the normal range of serum total protein was 26.3% in ALC, 16.7% in AFL and 3.5% in A. Serum albumin was lower in 41.3% of ALC. 2) The alcoholics without liver disease showed significantly higher level of serum triglycerides, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol than the other groups. The alcoholic subjects had lower HDL cholesterol than normal subjects. Overall, the protein and lipids status of the alcoholic subjects in this study was evaluated to be very poor on the basis of biochemical assessments. The results suggest that alcohol abuse and poor dietary intake could cause malnutrition. An extensive nutritional education should be emphasized for the alcohol consuming population. High quality of protein and other dietary intakes from early stage of the disease may be effective in nutritional therapy for the patient with alcoholic liver disease.
The number of diabetics in Korea is about 3 to 5 percent of the population, and the incidence is increasing yearly due to changes of life style and food intake. Diet is a key element in the management of diabetes, yet the appropriate diet for diabetes remains controversial. We have recently shown that a diet rich in protein of animal origin(casein) seems beneficial to controling plasma glucose and lipids in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. It therefore seemed desirable to find out whether the beneficial effect of high casein diet in experimental diabetes could also be reproduced with a vegetable source of protein(soy). The purpose of this study is to compare these results with the results of our previous study. In the present study, non-diabetic and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were studied in order to examine the effects of altering the level(20% vs 60%) of dietary soy protein on blood glucose, lipids, and hormones. Results of the present study showed that a high soy protein diet decreased triglyceride concentration in diabetic rats. However, diabetic rats fed a high soy protein diet were not hypocholesterolemic compared to rats fed a control diet. Moreover, diabetic rats fed a high soy protein diet had significantly increased plasma glucose concentration compared to rats fed a control diet. This study was not able to discern a specific effect of dietary protein level on insulin, glucagon, or insulin/glucagon ratio. Except for the hypotriglyceridemic effect, the results were not similar to the findings of our previous study which showed a beneficial effect on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats fed a high casein diet.
This study was performed to evaluate the effect of red-yeast-rice on blood lipids and also to investigated the relation of blood lipids, bone related hormones, and bone mineral density in overiectomized rats. Forty female rats (body weight $210\pm5$g) were divided into two groups. The rats in the first group were ovariectomized which the others received sham operation (SHAM). And then each rat group was further divided into control diet $(casein\;20\%)$ and red-yeast-rice powder supplemented $(0.1\%)$ diet group. All rats were fed on experimental diet and deionized water ad libitum for 9 weeks. Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) were measured using PIXImus in spine and femur. Bone formation and bone resorption were measured by serum osteocalcin and urinary deoxypyridinoline (DPD) crosslinks value. Serum growth hormone, IGF-1 and calcitonin were analyzed using radioimmunoassay kits. The red-yeast-rice group had significantly lower the blood triglyceride concentration and had lower the blood total cholesterol concentration than casein group did in ovariectomized rats. And the red-yeast-rice group than casein group in ovariectomized rats. The red-yeast-rice group had significantly lower the atherogenic index than control group within the ovariectomized groups. In the experimental rats, serum total cholesterol concentration was negatively correlated with femur BMC and crosslink value. Crosslink value was negatively correlated with spine BMC and IGF-1. Osteocalcin concentration was negatively correlated with crosslink value. Growth hormone was negatively correlated with crosslink value and positively correlated with spine BMC. The findings of this study suggest that red-yeast-rices are beneficial for blood lipid in ovariectomized rats. And when considering a population-based public health approach to lowering cholesterol and bone loss, and preventing coronary heart disease and osteoporosis, the red-yeast-rice dietary supplement could provide a new approach for the maintenance of healthier cholesterol and bone.
