  • An investigation on spray characteristics of fuels which diesel and di-methyl ether (DME) with change of injection pressure used the multi-injection in constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC). Diesel was already used famous fuel which we could use. DME showed similar features with diesel like as cetane number, auto-ignition temperature. High cetane number of diesel and DME could make possible to compression ignition. DME showed different atomization from diesel due to evaporating pressures and boiling points. Experiments were carried out in CVCC equipped with Delphi solenoid 6-hole type injector and the spray characteristics of diesel and DME were tested the various pre and pilot injection. Terms of injections and a number of injections in multi-injection has been controlled. Experiments were performed in 2 types that 1500 rpm, 2000 rpm and under the condition of injection ranging from 100 bar to 500 bar. From the results of this experiment diesel showed longer spray penetration than DME. That result showed different of atomization speed DME and diesel. Result of high injection pressure condition showed similar spray characteristics diesel and DME. After this investigation, new conditions and experiments using laser light to go forward and add the fuels like as the biodiesel and diesel and DME blend.

  • In order to control emissions from engine, it is necessary to understand the mixture formation process of diesel spray. In this study, analysis of diesel fuel(n-Tridecane, $C_{13}H_{28}$) spray under a high temperature and pressure was performed by a general-purpose program, ANSYS CFX release 11.0, and the results of these are compared with experimental results of diesel fuel spray using the Exciplex Fluorescence Method. The simulation results of diesel spray is analyzed by using the combination of Large-Eddy Simulation(LES) and Lagrangian Particle Tracking(LPT), and then injection pressure was selected as an analysis parameter. Consequently, it was found that the experimental results and the numerical results are consistent with each other, and then in order to investigate the behavior characteristics of evaporative diesel spray, the effectiveness of the use of CFX of commercial code is definitely validated.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of the ethanol blending in diesel-ethanol blended fuels on the spray and combustion characteristics in a common-rail four-cylinder diesel engine. For the analysis of the spray characteristics, the spray images were obtained using a high speed camera with metal-halide lamps. From these spray images, the macroscopic spray characteristics such as the spray tip penetration and spray cone angle were investigated. Also, the combustion characteristics including the combustion pressure and the rate of heat release were studied with the analysis of the exhaust emissions in diesel-ethanol blended fuel driven diesel engine. It can be confirmed from the experiment on spray characteristics of diesel-ethanol blended fuels that the increased ethanol blending ratio induced the decrease of the spray tip penetration after the end of the injection. The spray cone angle slightly increased by the blending of ethanol fuel. In the experiment on atomization characteristics, the ethanol blending caused the improvement of the diesel atomization performance. On the other hand, at the same engine load condition, the increase of the ethanol blending ratio lead to lengthen the ignition delays, and to decrease the peak combustion pressure and the rate of heat release. Totally, the combustion and emission characteristics of ULSD and DE10 showed similar characteristics. However, in the case of DE20, CO and HC rapidly increased, and $NO_x$ decreased. It can be believed that 20% ethanol disturbed the combustion of diesel-ethanol blended fuel due to the low cetane number and evaporation.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of biodiesel derived from waste cooking oil on the spray behavior and macroscopic spray characteristics. To analyze quantitative characteristics of test fuels, injection quantity was measured at various injection pressures and the spray images of injected fuels in the pressurized chamber were obtained by using a high speed camera and image analysis system. Based on the measured spray images, the spray tip penetration and spray cone angle were investigated at various energizing timings and injection pressures. In this work, the experimental results showed that the injection quantity of waste cooking biodiesel indicated the higher quantities than diesel at high injection pressure. As the injection pressure was increased, the spray tip penetrations of biodiesel were higher value than diesel. The difference of penetration between biodiesel and conventional diesel fuel was reduced in accordance with the increase of injection pressure. Also, the spray angles of diesel were larger than that of biodiesel because diesel fuel has lower viscosity than biodiesel. In addition, the spray evolution processes of biodiesel fuel at various injection pressures and the elapsed time after the injection were compared to the conventional diesel fuel.

  • The study is to investigate the mixing stability, fuel properties, and macroscopic spray characteristics of diesel-gasoline blended fuels in a common-rail injection system of a diesel engine. The test fuels were mixed diesel with gasoline fuel, which were based volume fraction of gasoline from 0 to 100% in 20% intervals. In order to analyze the blended effect of gasoline to diesel fuel, the properties of test fuels such as density, viscosity, and surface tension were measured. In addition, the spray behavior characteristics were studied by investigating the spray tip penetration and spray angle using a spray images through a spray visualization system. It was revealed that the density, kinematic viscosity and surface tension of diesel-gasoline blending fuels were decreased with the increase of gasoline fuel. The injection quantity of test fuels were almost similar level at short energizing duration condition. On the other hand, the increase of energizing duration shows the decrease of injection quantity compared to short energizing duration. The test blending fuels have similar growth in Spray tip penetration and Spray cone angle.

  • The low-emission and high-performance diesel combustion is an important issue in the combustion research community, In order to understand the detailed diesel flame involving the complex physical processes, it is quite desirable to diesel spray dynamics, auto-ignition and spray flame propagation. Dynamics of fuel spray is a crucial element for air-fuel mixture formation, flame stabilization and pollutant formation, In the present study, the diesel RCM (Rapid Compression Machine) and the Electric Control injection system have been designed and developed to investigate the effects of injection pressure, injection timing, and intake air temperature on spray dynamics and diesel combustion processes, In terms of the macroscopic spray combustion characteristics, it is observed that the fuel jet atomization and the droplet breakup processes become much faster by increasing the injection pressure and the spray angle, With increasing the cylinder pressure, there is a tendency that the of spray pattern in the downstream region tends to be spherical due to the increase of air density and the corresponding drag force, Effects of intake temperature and injection pressure on auto-ignition is experimently analysed and discussed in detail.

  • Using Diesel-Water Emulsion fuel in commercial diesel engine can reduce NOx and soot when it is injected through the injector. Because water in Diesel-Water Emulsion fuel is vaporized ahead of diesel particle and it cause decrease of combustion temperature. Furthermore, research about the possibility of applicating Diesel-Water Emulsion fuels to commercial diesel engine is demanded in order to prove that Diesel-Water Emulsion fuel is able to apply commercial diesel engine without any replacement of equipments. This research analyzed applicable possibility of Diesel-Water Emulsion fuels to commercial diesel engine's fuel injection system refering injection and spray characteristics. In this research, there are 3 experiments, that is injection quantity, spray visualization, and injection rate. Diesel-Water Emulsion fuel has less injection quantities compared to diesel fuel, and spray penetration length is more longer than diesel. Furthermore, emulsion fuels have less dispersed than diesel fuel. In conclusion, comparing with diesel fuel with only spray characteristics, Diesel-Water Emulsion fuel has bad effects about dispersion and vaporization.

  • The spray-wall impingement in diesel engines is important to mixture preparation, engine performance and pollutant emissions. The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of spray-wall impingement on fuel distribution, combustion and emission characteristics by using both experimental and numerical methods. To investigate the spray-wall impingement process, an impingement-chamber was designed and a visualization experiment system was also developed. The images of impinged spray and free spray were digitally recorded with an intensified CCD camera. To investigate the fuel distribution, combustion and emission characteristics of impinged spray in a real diesel engine, the fuel injection and combustion processes of an engine with impingement-chamber were simulated by CFD software. Equivalence ratio distribution results were obtained to understand the fuel distribution characteristics of the impinged spray. Some combustion and emission characteristics were also acquired and the results showed that ignition delay of impinged spray was shorter than that of free spray; NO emission of the impinged spray was significantly less than that of free spray, but soot emission of impinged spray was more than that of the free spray. This study found that the diesel engine with spray-wall impingement has significant potential to reduce NO emission.
