Examination on Combustion Quality Analysis of Residue Heavy Fuel Oil and Improvement of Combustion Quality Using Pre-injection (중질 잔사유의 연소성 분석과 보조 분사에 의한 연소성 향상에 관한 검토)

  • Due to the development of the petroleum refining technology and continuously increased demand from markets, a quantity of gasoline and diesel oil produced from a restricted quantity of crude oil has been increasing, and residual fuel to be used at marine diesel engines has been gradually becoming low quality. As a result, it was recently reported that trouble oils which cause abnormal combustion such as knocking with extreme noise and misfire from internal combustion engines were increasing throughout the world. In this study, an author investigated ignitability and combustion quality by using combustion analyzer with constant volume(FCA, Fuel Combustion Analyzer) and middle speed diesel engine about MDO(Marine Diesel Oil), HFO(Heavy Fuel Oil), LCO(Light Cycle Oil) and Blend-HFO which was blended LCO of 1000 liters with HFO of 600 liters. Moreover, for betterment of ignitability and combustion quality of injected fuels, multi-injection experiment was carried out in the diesel engine using Blend-HFO. According to the results of FCA analysis, ignitability and combustion quality was bad in the order of MDO

The Effect of Hydrogen Added into In-let Air on Industrial Diesel Engine Performance (흡기중의 수소첨가가 산업용 디젤기관의 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • Diesel engines introduce only air into the cylinder, and the air is high lycompressed. Fuel is directly injected into the combustion chamber in high temperature and pressure. Therefore diesel engines have high thermal efficiency because of the high compression ratio, while having high level of particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions because of the direct fuel injection. Many technologies have been developed to reduce particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions from diesel engines. One of the technologies is hydrogen fuel introduced into the combustion chamber with diesel fuel. In this thesis tiny amount of hydrogen is supplied into the combustion chamber in order to enhance the combustion performance. The engine, in which hydrogen is introduced, is tested. There are 20 test conditions given as 5 torque values of 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, 0%, and 4 engine speeds of 700rpm, 1000rpm, 1500rpm and 2000rpm for the two cases with or without hydrogen addition. Maximum torques and Idle torques at each engine speed are measured, then the torque values are divided into 4 levels with 25% increasing step. The result shows that the fuel consumption, smoke, CO are reduced while the NOx emission is slightly increased, and the hydrogen addition has not a great effect on the performance at low loads but a great effect at a maximum load.

  • Compared with the spark-ignition gasoline engine, the compression-ignition diesel engine has reduced fuel consumption due to its higher thermal efficiency. In addition, this reduction in the fuel consumption also leads to a reduction in $CO_2$ emission. Diesel engines do not require spark-ignition systems, which makes them less technically complex. Thus, diesel engines are very suitable target engines for using biofuels with high cetane numbers. In this study, the spray characteristics of biofuels such as vegetable jatropha oil and soybean oil were analyzed and compared with those of diesel oil. The injection pressures and blend ratios of jatropha oil and diesel oil (BD3, BD5, and BD20) were used as the main parameters. The injection pressures were set to 500, 1000, 1500, and 1600 bar. The injection duration was set to $500{\mu}s$. Consequently, it was found that there is no significant difference in the characteristics of the spray behavior (spray angle) in response to changes in the blend ratio of the biodiesel or changes in the injection pressure. However, at higher injection pressures, the spray angle decreased slightly.

  • VCO nozzle is devised to minimize the HC emission and has been applied on some HSDI diesel engines. But it is not well reported whether VCO nozzle would be advantageous over SAC nozzle in a small HSDI diesel engine. In this paper it is presented that characteristics of VCO and SAC nozzle under common rail fuel injection system and their effects on the performance in a small HSDI diesel engine.

  • As the air pollution caused by diesel vehicles goes worse, so non-road vehicles exhaust gas standards are more strict in an foreign countries. There is growing evidence that diesel vehicles could play the important role in determining health effects. Most of the particle number emitted by diesel engines is in the nanopaticle range, D$\_$p/ < 50nm, while most of the mass is in the accumulation mode, 50nm < D$\_$p/ < 1000nm range. The aim of this work was to investigate pollutants in the exhaust of railroad diesel rolling stock under load tests.

An Estimation on Two Stroke Low Speed Diesel Engines' Shaft Fatigue Strength due to Torsional Vibrations in Time Domain (시간영역에서 과도 비틀림 진동에 의한 저속 2행정 디젤엔진의 축계 피로강도 평가)

  • Two stroke low speed diesel engines are widely used for marine propulsion or as power plant prime mover. These engines have many merits which includes higher thermal efficiency, mobility and durability. Yet various annoying vibrations occur sometimes in ships or at the plant itself. Of these vibrations, torsional vibration is very important and dictates a careful investigation during the engme's initial design stage for safe operation. With the rule and limit on torsional vibration in place, shaft strength fatigue due to torsional vibration however demands further analysis which possibly can be incorporated in the classification societies' rule and limit. In addition, the shaft's torsional vibration stresses can be calculated equivalently from accumulated fatigue cycles number due to transient torsional vibration in time domain. In this paper, authors suggest a new estimation method combined with Palmgren-Miner equation. A 6S70MC-C ($25,320ps{\times}91rpm$) engine for ship propulsion was selected as a case study. Angular velocity was measured, instead of shaft's strain, for simplified measurement and it was converted to torsional vibration stress for accumulated fatigue cycle numbers in shafting life time. Likewise, the accumulated fatigue calculation was compared with shaft fatigue strength limit. This new method can be further realized and confirmed in ship with two stroke low speed diesel engine.

  • Aging construction machinery and vehicles with old diesel engines usually have a long life span, so they continue to emit harmful emissions. Therefore, replacing these older diesel engines with engines that meet the latest emisstion standard is expected to help improve air quality, and engines with propane fuels, which are easily available at construction sites, can be an appropriate alternative. In this study, a propane fueled engine was developed based on a 6.8-liter CNG engine, and technologies such as gas injectors, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), and enhanced catalysts were applied. As a result, nitrogen oxides achieved half of the emission performance at the Stage-V level, the latest emission standard, while securing diesel engine output and torque in the same class.

The development of a wear resistant hard-metal tappet in diesel engines

  • Diesel engines have many sliding parts with solid body contact. For example, a piston-ring and a cylinder bore, a valve and a valve-seat, a cam and a valve tappet. These parts have a severe wear problem. during engine life times. During these times, the valve tappet has abnormal wear such as scuffing and pitting due to a high hertzian contact stress between the cam and the tappet. Excessive wear problems frequently occur to both the cam and the tappet. To solve these problems, we developed an advanced wear resistant tappet. The developed tappet consisted of a hard-metal wear part and a steel body. To increase a bonding strength, those two parts, were directly bonded to each other. Also to decrease a bonding temperature, we developed the composition of Ni-binder materials in the hard metal. To estimate the wear characteristics of the newly developed tappet, we performed wear tests and engine dynamo tests in order to compare them with a conventional Fe-base tappet. As a result, the newly developed tappet has better wear characteristics than those of the conventional tappet. In addition, we performed a 100,000km field-test, and the newly developed tappet showed much improved wear resistance.

  • This paper presents a numerical analysis of the delivery pressure wave in a 210-kW/cyl fuel injection pump (P. Corporation, Changwon-si, Korea) for medium-speed diesel engines using Ansys Fluent R15.0. Results obtained from experiment and from numerical analysis of the fuel delivery pressure wave were compared and found to be similar, thereby confirming the reliability of the numerical analysis of the delivery pressure wave in the fuel injection pump.

EXPANSION OF HYUNDAI'S MEDIUM SPEED DIESEL ENGINE FAMILY, HiMSEN (현대중공업 중속디젤엔진 힘센엔진 패밀리의 신모델 추가 개발)

  • Since HiMSEN H21/32, a new medium speed diesel engine of Hyundai's own design, was introduced in 2001, Hyundai has added new models of H25/33 and H17/28 into HiMSEN engine family. These two new engines take after faithfully to the original HiMSEN concept of a PRACTICAL engine by Hi-Touch and Hi-Tech. The prototype of H25/33 was developed jointly with Rolls Royce Bergen originally and also introduced in 2001. But most of the engine design have been changed by Hyundai for the commercial versions to be a member of HiMSEN family, which has little interchangeability with the prototype. H17/28 is now under development as the smallest size of the family. This new engine also has the longest stroke of a class engine, which has been proven as the best basis for future environmental challenge. The higher compression ratio of 17 and optimized Miller Timing with Simplified pulse turbocharging system applied all HiMSEN engines as which showed the most practical solution against current heavy fuel combustion issues for the time being before introducing digital control system. This paper describes the design and development of these new HiMSEN engines and also reviews the service experiences of H21/32 and H25/33, which launched successfully.
