The direct injection diesel engine is one of the most efficient thermal engines. For this reason DI diesel engines are widely used for heavy-duty applications. But the world is faced with very serious problems related to the air pollution due to the exhaust emissions of diesel engine. So, that is air pollution related to exhaust gas resulted from explosive combustion should be improved. Exhaust Gas Recirculation(EGR) is a proven method to reduce NOx emissions. In this study, the experiments-were performed at various engine loads while the EGR rates were set from 0% to 20%. The emissions trade-off and combustion of diesel engine are investigated. Hot and cooled EGR are achieved without cooling and with cooling respectively. It was found that the exhaust emissions with the EGR system resulted in a very large reduction in oxides of nitrogen at the expense of higher smoke emissions. Also, the reduction rates of NOx emissions for hot and cooled EGR are similar at load 20%.

Two stroke low speed diesel engines are used as a power supplier not only for marine vessel but also diesel power plant with a benefit of its higher mobility and durability than the other thermal engines. However, there are some disadvantages such as the bigger vibrating excitation forces generated by high combustion pressure in cylinders which various kinds of vibrations are caused. In this paper, it is theoretically studied to control engine body vibration using dynamic vibration absorber. As an actual case, dynamic absorbers are designed for controlling X-mode vibration of 9K80MC-S engine on the diesel power plant and its performance is identified by the vibration test both in shop and site

In order to reduce particulate matters (PM) from marine diesel engines, we developed novel electrostatic diesel particulate matter filtration system. Electrostatic diesel particulate filtration (DPF) system consists of electrostatic charger and filtration part. The electrostatic charger and filtration part are composed of a metal discharge electrode and a metal fiber filter (porosity: 68.1-86.1%), respectively. In the electrostatic charger part, diesel soot particles are reduced by electrostatic force. The filtration part after electrostatic charger part reduces diesel soot particles through inertial and diffusion forces. The filtration efficiency of electrostatic DPF system was examined through the experiments using engine dynamometer system (300 kW) and ship (200 kW). The PM reduction efficiencies due to inertial and electrostatic forces showed about 70-75% and 80-90%, respectively, according to the RPM of the engine. The differential pressure of the electrostatic DPF system applied to the ship was about 1-9 mbar, which was less than the allowable differential pressure for ship engines in South Korea (100 mbar). The results show that the electrostatic DPF system is suitable for application to the PM reduction emitted from ships.
It is becoming increasingly difficult for engines using conventional fuels and combustion techniques to meet stringent emission norms. The homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) concept is being evaluated on account of its potential to control both smoke and NOx emissions. However, HCCI engines face problems of combustion control. In this work, a single cylinder water-cooled diesel engine was operated in the HCCI mode. Diesel was injected during the suction stroke($0^{\circ}$ to $20^{\circ}$ degrees aTDC) using a special injection system in order to prepare a nearly homogeneous charge. The engine was able to develop a BMEP(brake mean effective pressure) in the range of 2.15 to 4.32 bar. Extremely low levels of NOx emissions were observed. Though the engine operation was steady, poor brake thermal efficiency(30% lower) and high HC, CO and smoke were problems. The heat release showed two distinct portions: cool flame followed by the main heat release. The low heat release rates were found to result in poor brake thermal efficiency at light loads. At high brake power outputs, improper combustion phasing was the problem. Fuel deposited on the walls was responsible for increased HC and smoke emissions. On the whole, proper combustion phasing and a need for a well- matched injection system were identified as the important needs.

The use of palm oil and diesel blended with ethanol, known as a microemulsion biofuel, is gaining attention as an attractive renewable fuel for engines that may serve as a replacement for fossil-based fuels. The microemulsion biofuels can be formulated from the mixture of palm oil and diesel as the oil phase; ethanol as the polar phase; methyl oleate as the surfactant; alkanols as the cosurfactants. This study investigates the influence of the three cosurfactants on fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions in a direct-injection (DI) diesel engine. The microemulsion biofuels along with neat diesel fuel, palm oil-diesel blends, and biodiesel-diesel blends were tested in a DI diesel engine at two engine loads without engine modification. The formulated microemulsion biofuels increased fuel consumption and gradually reduced the nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) emissions and exhaust gas temperature; however, there was no significant difference in their carbon monoxide (CO) emissions when compared to those of diesel. Varying the carbon chain length of the cosurfactant demonstrated that the octanol-microemulsion fuel emitted lower CO and $NO_x$ emissions than the butanol- and decanol-microemulsion fuels. Thus, the microemulsion biofuels demonstrated competitive advantages as potential fuels for diesel engines because they reduced exhaust emissions.
The engines mounted on power-tillers are used as power source in various kinds of works such as plowing, harrowing, transporting, spraying, water pumping and threshing, etc. But the engines have not been used effectively from a standpoint of fuel consumption because of lack of proper power transmission system and lack of understanding of fuel consumption characteristics of the engines. Therefore, this study was attempted to establish proper power transmission system between the power-tiller engines and various implements. In order to accomplish the above objective, firstly, power requirement and pulley sizes for various implements, which are driven by the power-tiller engines, were investigated to find out whether the power transmission system is proper. Secondly, partload variable engine-speed test was conducted for 3 different sizes of diesel engines to measure to specific fuel consumption. Thirdly, the present power transmission systems were analyzed in terms of specific fuel consumption, and proper power transmission systems were suggested for various implements. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1. Power requirement for each fixed-type implement of power-tiller varied from 1.5 ps to 11 ps according to its type and operating conditions, but generally in the range of 2.5 ps to 7 ps. 2. Each power tiller and implement were equipped with only one size of pully with few exeptions. With the present power transmission systems, the engines can't be utilized effectively in terms of fuel economy. The pulley size of engine or implement should be diversified to provide the optimum engine speed for different implements. 3. For a diesel eninge with the rated power output of 6 ps, the optimum engine speed to minimize specific fuel consumption was 2200 rpm for the power reguirement in the range of 6 ps or more, 1700 rpm in the range of 4 to 6 ps, and 1200 rpm in the range of 4 ps or less. 4. For a diesel engine with the rated power output of 8 ps, the optimum engine speed was 2200 rpm for the power requirement in the range of 7 ps or more, 1700 rpm in the range of 4.8 to 7 ps, and 1200 rpm in the range of 4.8 ps or less. 5. For a diesel engine with the rated power output of 10 ps, the optimum engine speed was 2200 rpm for the power requirement in the range of 8.4 ps or more, 1700 rpm in the range of 5.4 ps to 8.4 ps, and 1200 rpm in thr range of 5.4 ps or less. 6. Provided the existing implements are dirven by 8 ps diesel engines, the optimum size of engine pulley should be larger than 120mm for the works of requiring less than 4 ps and 90-110mm for the works requiring 4.5-6.5 ps in order to minimize fuel consumption.
Marine diesel engines with high thermal efficiency and fuel diversity used for propulsive power have been taking charge of important position on marine transport. However, marine environment has recently focused on emissions such as nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide which is generated from combustion of low grade fuels. EGR(Exhaust gas recirculation) system is one of effective methods to reduce the nitrogen oxide emission from marine diesel engines. In general, it is considered that recirculating gas influences fuel combustion and emissions in diesel engines. However, along with positive effects of EGR, the EGR system using fuels of including high sulfur concentration should be considered about re-combustion and activation of sulfur dioxide in recirculating gas. Therefore, in experimental study, an author investigates effects of sulfur dioxide mixture concentration in intake air on combustion and exhaust emission characteristics in a direct injection diesel engine. In results, change of sulfur dioxide concentrations in intake air had negligible impact on combustion chamber pressure, rate of heat release and emissions compared with effects of oxygen decreasing and carbon dioxide increasing of EGR.
In recently, studies concerned to the diesel engine uses a natural gas as a fuel oil whose infra has been built already was approached to PCCI or HCCI with keeping a high thermal efficiency and reducing NOx and PM have been researching actively in normally single cylinder. An ignition source is required to bum the natural gas by a spark plug in gasoline engines, due to a higher auto-ignition temperature of natural gas. Then gas oil and DME were introduced as the ignition source. In this study as basic data for practical use of natural gas PCCI and HCCI engines, combustion characteristics and emission characteristics on 4-cylinders natural gas PCCI and HCCI engines with gas oil and DME as ignition sources were analyzed and the engine load range that is main object for practical use of PCCI and HCCI engines was made clearly by empirical experiment.

Many simulation programs included intake and exhaust system on diesel engines have been developed. However, existing programs using 1-D numerical analytic methods in manifold gas flow by the method of characteristics have some problems to be solved.. Especially to optimzing the engine system, a simulation program which had more efficiency and accuracy is required newly. In this paper, a improved method for application limit and efficiency as well as mass conservation named constant mesh explicit method of characteristic was described. And some calculation results by this method were compared with experimental results and orther calculation results. Also, it was confirmed that the results by the proposed method were more agreed with experimental results.
