Piston slap is one of the major sources of noise in a 4-cycle diesel engine. Piston slap is not only one of major source mounted near the top and bottom of the piston thrust and antithrust skirts. Effects of engine speed, load and coolant temperature on piston motion were investigated. The measured piston motion showed 6 slapes per cycle resulting from the change of side force. Major piston slap timing was retarded as engine speeds became higher. The increase of engine load made large piston transverse movement toward thrust side of cylinder block. Piston transverse movement was due to reduced piston-liner clearance at higher coolant temperature.

This paper describes briefly the simulation program for predicting the performance of a high speed turbocharged four cycle diesel engine. The wave phenomena in the intake and exhaust systems are calculated by the characteristic method. The combustion process in the power cycle is represented by the heat release pattern which is given by the Wiebe's function or the pattern based on measured values. Turbocharger matching for the engine is described by utilizing the characteristic maps of both the compressor and turbine, which are obtained from quasi-steady states. A comparison of experimental and calculated results shows a good agreement. Then the influences of the intake system, the period of valve overlap and the characteristics of the turbine are numerically investigated by the simulation.
The deterioration of a shunting locomotive was characterized for the lifetime assessment. The locomotive has been used for shunting works in steel making processes, and in this investigation, various types of technical evaluation methods for the locomotive parts were employed to assess the current deterioration status and to provide important clue for lifetime prediction. Unlike other rolling stocks in railway applications, the diesel shunting locomotive is composed of major components such as diesel engine, transmission, gear box, brake system, electronic devices, etc., which cover more than 70 percent of the total price of the locomotive. Therefore, in this paper, each part of major components in the diesel locomotive was analyzed in terms of the degree of deterioration. The life-cycle-cost (LCC) analysis was performed based on the maintenance and repair history as compared with economical cost to provide the cost-effective prediction, i.e., to assess either repair for reuse or putting the locomotive out of service based on cost-effective calculation.
In this study, cycle simulation was performed to investigate the effect of EGR on combustion characteristics and emissions including NO and soot using a two-zone model in a DI diesel engine. The NO formation was well predicted for different EGR rate and temperature using a two-zone model. The oxygen in the inlet charge was replaced by CO$_2$ and H$_2$O with EGR. The reduction in the inlet charge oxygen resulted in very large reduction in NO level at the same inlet charge temperature. The effect of EGR was to reduce the burned gas temperature. When EGR was increased from 0% to 15%, the peak flame temperature was decreased by 50$\^{C}$ and it caused about 57% NO reduction. EGR caused increase of the overall inlet charge temperature which offset some of benefit of lower flame temperature resulting from O$_2$ displacement. Cooling the EGR was confirmed to provide additional benefits by lowering NO emission. It also reduced soot emission.
The purpose of this study was compared the spray, combustion and emissions (NOx, CO, HC, smoke) characteristics of a typical fuel (100% Diesel, DME) and Diesel-DME blended fuel in a Constant Volume Chamber (CVC) and a single-cylinder DI diesel engine. Spray characteristics were investigated under various ambient and fuel injection pressures when the Diesel-DME blended ratio is varied. The parameters of spray sturdy were spray shape, penetration length, and spray angle. Common types of injectors having seven holes and made by Bosch were used. As of use, the typical fuel (100% Diesel, DME) and the blended fuel by mixture ratio 95:5, 90:10 (Diesel:DME) were used. The Injection pressure was fixed by 70.1MPa, when the ambient Pressure was varied 0.1, 2.6 and 5.1 MPa. The combustion experiments was conducted with single cylinder engine equipped with common rail injection system. injection pressure is 70 MPa. The amount of injected fuels is adjusted to obtain the fixed input calorie value as 972.2 J/cycle in order to compare with the fuel conditions.
Natural gas has been considered one of the most promising alternative fuels for transportation because of its abundance as well as its ability to reduce regulated pollutants. We measured emission characteristics of nanoparticles from lean burn H/D(Heavy-Duty) CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) engine equipped with oxidation catalysts. The experiments were carried out to measure the emission and engine performance according to the ESC test cycle. The CO and THC conversion efficiencies on the best catalyst in the ESC test cycle achieved about 91 % and 83 %, respectively. From the measurement by the SMPS, the number of nanoparticles emitted from H/D CNG engine is reduced by about 99 % which is more than that of 2.5 L diesel engine. The particle number concentrations of H/D CNG engine were almost nanoparticles. Nanoparticles smaller than 30 nm emitted from the H/D CNG engine and diesel engine equipped with a CDPF(Catalyzed Diesel Particulate Filter) were quite similar. However, the particles bigger than 30nm from the CNG engine were smaller than the particles from diesel engine equipped with a CDPF. The higher the CNG engine load, the lower the particle number from engine-out, but it increased slightly at full load.
Diesel PM can be controlled using Diesel Particulate Filter, which can effectively reduce the level of soot emissions to ambient background levels. In the Heavy Duty Diesel area, the Continuously Regeneration trap has been widely applied in the retrofit market. As the Special act for the improvement of air quality in the capital area, the retrofit program for DPF to used diesel vehicle has progressed favorably and there are currently over 1,000 of these DPF in use in retrofit applications in korea. These DPF comprise a specially formulated Diesel Oxidation Catalyst upstream of a DPF. The $NO_2$ generated by the DOC is used to combust the carbon collected in the DPF at low temperature. To certificate DPF device that is suitable to domestic circumstances, it is necessary to evaluate exactly the DPF devices according to the regulation of DPF certificate test procedure for retrofit(ministry of environment(MOE) announcement NO. 2005-16). To do so the understand of that regulation like the standard of PM reduction rate is needed. In this study the test procedure including test cycle and BPT test condition was examined and also the test result for specific DPF was analyzed. In every test like field test, PM reduction efficiency test and seoul-10 mode test, no defect could be showed.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate representativeness of fuel-based emission factors. Twelve light-duty diesel vehicles which meet Euro-3 to 5 legislative emission limits were selected for emission tests. Second-by-second modal emission rates of vehicles were measured on a standard laboratory chassis dynamometer system. An off-cycle driving cycle was developed as a representative Korean real-world on-road driving cycle. Fuel-based emission factors were developed for short trip segments that involved in the selected driving cycle. Each segment was defined to have unit travel distance, which is 1 km, and characterized by its average speed and Relative Positive Acceleration (RPA). Fuel-based $NO_x$ emission factors demonstrate relatively good representativeness in terms of vehicle operation conditions. $NO_x$ emission factors are estimated to be within ${\pm}20%$ of area-wide emission factor under more than 40% of total driving situations. This result implies that the fuel-based $NO_x$ emission factor could be practically implemented into the on-road emission management strategies, such as a remote sensing device (RSD). High emitting vehicles as well as high emitting operating conditions heavily affect on the mean values and distributions of CO and THC emission factors. Few high emitting conditions are pulling up the mean value and biasing the distributions, which weaken representativeness of fuel-based CO and THC emission factors.
The effect of pilot injection quantity on the combustion and emissions characteristics of a compression ignition engine with a biodiesel-compressed natural gas (CNG) dual fuel combustion (DFC) system is studied in this work. Biodiesel is used as a pilot injection fuel to ignite the main fuel, CNG of DFC. The pilot injection quantity is controlled to investigate the characteristics of combustion and exhaust emissions in a single cylinder diesel engine. The injection pressure and injection timing of pilot fuel are maintained at approximately 120 MPa and BTDC 17 crank angle, respectively. Results show that the indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) of biodiesel-CNG DFC mode is similar to that of diesel-CNG DFC mode at all load conditions. Combustion stability of biodiesel-CNG DFC mode decreased with increase of engine load, but no notable trend of cycle-to-cycle variations with increase of pilot injection quantity is discovered. The combustion of biodiesel-CNG begins at a retarded crank angle compared to that of diesel-CNG at low load, but it is advanced at high loads. Smoke and NOx of biodiesel-CNG are simultaneously increased with the increase of pilot fuel quantity. Compared to the diesel-CNG DFC, however, smoke and NOx emissions are slightly reduced over all operating conditions. Biodiesel-CNG DFC yields higher $CO_2$ emissions compared to diesel-CNG DFC over all engine conditions. CO and HC emissions for biodiesel-CNG DFC is decreased with the increase of pilot injection quantity.
The purpose of this study os to investigate how the natural gas in fuel blend influences the polutant emission of diesel engine. Four stroke cycle single cylinder engine is used for this experiment and four kind of fuel blends were made. Fuel blends show four different torque ratios between diesel oil and natural gas, which are 4 : 0. 3 : 1, 2 : 2 and 1 : 3. The constituents of exhaust gases of engine are analyzed for every fuel blend. The experimental results say that the mixing of natural gas into diesel fuel is an very effective way to reduce the amount of soot in the exhaust gas.
