The vaporization characteristics and spray combustion processes in the high-pressure environment are numerically investigated. This study employ the high-pressure vaporization model together with the state-of-art spray submodels. The present high-pressure vaporization model can account for transient liquid heating, circulation effect inside the droplet forced convection, Stefan flow effect, real gas effect and ambient gas solubility in the liquid droplets. Computations are carried out for the evaporating sprays, the evaporating and burning sprays, and the spray combustion processes of the turbocharged diesel engine. Numerical results indicate that the high-pressure effects are quite crucial for simulating the spray combustion processes including vaporization, spray dynamics, combustion, and pollutant formation.
The present study has numerically investigates the vaporization, auto-ignition and combustion processes in the high-pressure and high-temperature conditions encountered in the diesel engine. In the present study, in order to understand the overall spray combustion characteristics of DME fuel as well as to identify the distinctive differences of DME combustion processes compared to conventional hydrocarbon liquid fuels, the sequence of the comparative analysis has been systematically made for DME and n-Heptane liquid fuels. Computations for DME fuel are made for two cases including constant fuel mass flow rate condition and fixed heat release rate. Based on numerical results, the discussions are made for the detailed combustion processes of DME and n-Heptane spray.

The Effects of intake swirl and combustion parameters on the performance and emission characteristics in a V8 type turbocharged intercooler D.I. diesel engine of the displacement $16.7\iota$ were studied experimentally in this paper. Generally the swirl in the combustion process of diesel engine promotes mixing of the injection fuel and the intake air. Also, TCI diesel engine is put to practically use intercooler in order to increase boost efficiency which is cooled boost air. As a result of steady flow test, when the swirl ratio is increased, the mean flow coefficient is decreased, whereas the Gulf factor is increased. And through engine test, its can be effected to meet performance and emission by optimizing the main parameters; the swirl ratio is 2.25, compression ratio is 17.5, combustion bowl is re-entrant $8.5^{\circ}$, nozzle hole diameter is $\phi0.33^{\ast}3+\phi0.35^{\ast}2$, injection timing is BTDC $12^{\circ}CA$ and turbocharger is T02 model which are compressor 0.6A/R+46trim and turbine 1.0A/R+57trim.
Simulation is performed to analyze the characteristics of turbulent spray combustion in a diesel engine condition. An extended Conditional Moment Closure (CMC) model is employed to resolve coupling between chemistry and turbulence. Relevant time and length scales and dimensionless numbers are estimated at the tip and the mid spray region during spray development and combustion. The liquid volume fractions are small enough to support validity of droplets assumed as point sources in two-phase flow. The mean scalar dissipation rates (SDR) are lower than the extinction limit to show flame stability throughout the combustion period. The Kolmogorov scales remain relatively constant, while the integral scales increase with decay of turbulence. The chemical time scale decreases abruptly to a small value as ignition occurs with subsequent heat release. The Da and Ka show opposite trends due to variation in the chemical time scale. More work is in progress to identify the spray combustion regimes.
Pre-combustion chamber type indirect diesel engines have different combustion characteristics compared with those of common rail direct injection engine. The CONVERGE, specific engine CFD program, was used to simulate hollow cone spray model and combustion. The air-fuel mixture flow propagating from pre-combustion chamber to cylinder was concentrated at top half and center of the pre-combustion chamber throat. Stronger mixture flow was formed at smaller and longer throat cases. As a result, thermal efficiency and fuel consumption were improved for modified throat shape and the soot emission was also reduced.

Kerosene and diesel are compounded fuels with various types of hydrocarbon elements and difficult to model the chemical kinetics. This study focuses on the prediction of the non-equilibrium reaction of fuel-rich combustion with detailed kinetics developed by Dagaut using PSR(perfectly stirred reactor) assumption. In Dagaut's surrogate model for kerosene and diesel, chemical kinetics consists of 2352 reaction steps with 298 chemical species. Also, Frenklach's soot model was implemented along with detailed kinetics to calculate the gas properties of fuel rich combustion efflux.

In this study, numerical calculation is carried out to investigate the influence of injection timing, fuel amount, intake $O_2$ concentration, and EGR on Nitric Oxide(NO) formation using a two-zone model in a diesel engine. Results can be summarized as follows. The NO formation is very sensitive to the burned gas temperature, so multi-zone model must be applied to combustion process to predict the burned gas temperature exactly. Since the burned gas temperature increases rapidly during the premixed combustion, most NO is formed within 20 crank angle degrees after ignition. As the injection timing is retarded, the combustion occurs later in the expansion process which causes the decrease of burned gas temperature and, as a result, NO formation decrease. The increase of fuel amount results in the increase of earlier formation of NO in the engine. As the intake $O_2$ concentration increases, the maximum pressure and burned gas temperature increase due to activate combustion. And, [O] mole fraction of equilibrium combustion products also increase. Therefore NO exponentially increases. If exhaust gas is recirculated, the burned gas temperature decreases which results in NO decrease. If exhaust gas is cooled, more NO can be decreased.
This paper describes the effects of spray breakup model constants on spray and combustion characteristics in single cylinder compression engine. KIVA-3V code coupled with a CHEMKIN chemistry solver was used for numerical analysis. In this study, spray simulations and combustion simulations are studied simultaneously. Spray simulation was conducted in constant volume to reduce the effects of air-flow as swirl or tumble. The model validation was conducted and there are little difference between experiments and simulation, this differences were reasonable. In spray simulation, the effects of model constants on spray tip penetration, spray patter and SMD were studied. Furthermore, the analysis of effects of breakup variables on combustion and emissions characteristics was conducted. The results show the KH-RT breakup model constants affects spray and combustion characteristics strongly. Increasing KH model variable (B1) and RT model constants ($C_{\tau}$, $C_{RT}$) induced slower breakup time.
Spray impingement model and fuel film formation model were developed and incorporated into the computational fluid dynamics code, STAR-CD. The spray/wall interaction process were modelled by considering the change of behaviour with surface temperature condition and fuel film formation. We divided behaviour of fuel droplets after impingement into stick, rebound and splash using Weber number and parameter K. Spray impingement model accounts for mass conservation, energy conservation and heat transfer to the impinging droplets. A fuel film formation model was developed by Integrating the continuity, the Navier-Stokes and the energy equations along the direction of fuel film thickness. The validation of the model was conducted using diesel spray experimental data and gasoline spray impingement experiment. In all cases, the prediction compared reasonably well with experimental results. Spray impingement model and fuel film formation model have been applied to a direct injection diesel engine combustion chamber.

A model for the prediction of combustion and exhaust emissions of DI diesel engine has been formulated and developed . This model is a quasi-dimensional phenomenological one and is based on multi-zone combustion modelling concept. It takes into consideration, on a zonal basis ,detailed of fuel spray formation, droplet evaporation, air-fuel mixing, spray wall interaction, swirl , heat transfer, self ignition and burning rate . The emission model is considered with chemical equipment , as well as the kinetics of fuel. NO and soot reactions in order to calculate the pollutant concentrations within each zone and the whole of cylinder . The accuracy of prediction versus experimental data and the capability of the model in predicting engine heat release, cylinder pressure and all the major exhaust emissions on zonal and cumulative basis., is demonstrated. Detailed prediction results showing the sensitivity of the model bv various injection rates are presented and discussed.
