Among severe plastic deformation processes, ECAP has drawn much attention due to its advantages including ultra-fine grain size material production. In this paper, ECAP process with pure -Zirconium is investigated due to its applicability to nuclear reactors. The finite element method is employed to investigate the deformation behavior of materials during ECAP process. In particular, effects of process parameters such as die deformation and channel angles on the material behaviors have been investigated. Experimental studies have also been performed to verify the numerical results.

The controlling and prediction of spring back is one of the most important factors in sheet metal forming processes which require high dimensional precision. The relationship between effective parameters and spring back phenomenon is highly nonlinear and complicated. Moreover, the objective function is implicit with regard to the design variables. In this paper, first the influence of some effective factors on spring back in U-die bending process was studied through some experiments and then regarding the robustness of artificial neural network (ANN) approach in predicting objectives in mentioned kind of problems, ANN was used to estimate a prediction model of spring back. Eventually, the spring back angle was optimized using the Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA). The results showed that the employment of ANN provides us with less complicated and time-consuming analytical calculations as well as good results with reasonable accuracy.
Three-dimensional rigid-plastic finite element analysis has been performed to optimize open die forging process to make round bar. In the round bar forging, it is difficult to optimize process parameters in the operational environments. Therefore in this study, finite element method is used to analyze the practice of open die forging, focusing on the effects of reduction, feeding pitch and rotation angle for optimal forging pass designs. The soundness of forging process has been estimated by the smoothness and roundness of the bar at various combination of feeding pitches and rotation angles. From the test result, process conditions to make round bar having precise dimensional accuracy have been proposed.
Bi-2223/Ag superconducting wires have been mainly prepared by a powder-in-tube method. The drawing and the rolling are main processes to increase the core density and wire length. In the fabrication of long wire, especially, the drawing should be precisely controlled to assure the filament homogeneity. In this paper, the influences of drawing die angle, bearing length and reduction ratio on the sausaging and the critical current density of the wire are investigated. Single cored and multi-filamentary wires are fabricated by PIT method with different conditions. The core densities and sausaging in the wires are investigated and are discussed regarding their relationship to the I$_{c}$. It was made clear that the geometry of drawing die is sensitively dependent on the sausaging. The improvement of I$_{c}$ was achieved by reducing the die angle and high core density.ity.
The objective of this paper is to design stamping die of inner reinforcement panel with DL 950 advanced high strength steel as stamping materials through numerical analyses and experiments. The stamping process was designed as bending dominant process consisting of 1 step of notching and 4 steps of bending processes. In order to obtain a proper design of the stamping die, various three-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element analyses were performed using a commercial code AUTOFORM V4.2. Design parameter of stamping die was chosen as the corner radius of the stamping die for each step. From the results of the FE analysis, feasible corner radii of the stamping die, which can minimize the deviation of corner angle of the stamped part from design data, and forming load for each part were estimated. Stamping experiments were carried out using the manufactured stamping die according to the proposed die design. The results of experiments were shown that the stamping die can successfully manufacture the inner reinforcement panel with DL 950 advanced high strength steel as base stamping material.
Seamless pipes are fabricated by drilling a hole in a cylindrical material and drawing the material to the desired diameter. These pipes are used in environments where high reliability is required. In this study, the pipe drawing process was simulated using DEFORM, a commercial finite element method (FEM) analysis program. The outer diameter of the steel cylinder used herein before drawing was 70 mm, and the target outer diameter was 58 mm. The drawing process consisted of two stages. In this study, the effect of cross-sectional reduction rate on the pipe was investigated by varying the cross-sectional reduction rate in each step to achieve the target outer diameter. The results of this study showed that the first section reduction rate of 26% and the second section reduction rate of 13.9% caused the lowest damage to the material. Moreover, the FEM simulation results confirmed the influence of the drawing die angle on the pipe drawing process. The drawing die angles of 15° in the first step and 9° in the second step caused the least damage to the material.

The precision cold forging of helical gear for steering pinion has been studied. Because of the large helix angle, there are many difficult problems to control the material flow and part dimension. The die shape was proposed to improve the flow of workpiece. In order to improve the dimensional accuracy of forged part, a FE analysis was performed. The proposed die shape drives to flow amicably workpiece. The applied load was reduced up to 10 percent, compared to the conventional-shaped-die. The elastic deformation of die has been investigated quantitatively by the 3-dimensional FE analysis. The die-land has been expanded up to $10{\mu}m$ on loading stage, based on the FEM results. Therefore, the elastic deformation amounts should be taken into consideration to improve the dimensional accuracy of forged helical gear.
The twisting and extrusion process of the product with involute helical fin from the round billet is developed by the upper bound analysis. The twisting of extruded product is caused by the twisted die surface connecting the die entrance section and the die exit section linearly. In the analysis, the internal shear surface is defined as the curved twisted plane from the taisting of die surface and the shear work is calculated by the consumption of shear energy The increase rate of angular velocity is determined by the minimization of plastic work. The results of the analysis show that the angular velocity of the extruded product increases with the die twisting angle, the reduction of area, and decreases with the die length, the friction condition.
As in most metal forming processes, die and lubrication are of vital importance in hydrostatic extrusion. An efficient die design and lubrication system selection reduce the pressure required for a given reduction ratio by lowering friction at the billet-die interface. In contrast to the conventional macroscopic extrusion, fine-wire fabrication requires higher extrusion pressure and effect of friction is much more significant. Forming fine Au, Ag, and Cu wire with hydrostatic extrusion process in cold condition, the effect of extrusion die angle, lubrication and billet's initial diameter was studied.
The twisting and extrusion process of the product with trapezoidal helical fin from the round billet is developed by the upper bound analysis. The twisting of extruded product is caused by the twisted die surface connecting the die entrance section and the die exit section linearly. In the analysis, the rotational velocity in angular direction is assumed by the multiplication of radial distance and angular velocity. The angular velocity is increased linearly by axial distance from the die entrance. The increase rate of angular velocity is determined by the minimization of plastic work. The results of the analysis show that the angular velocity of the extruded product increases with the die twisting angle, the reduction of area, and decreases with the die length, the friction condition.
