  • PSC-Edge Rahmen Bridge makes low thickness and long span by introducing prestressed force to the edge girder and reducing positive moment. In the bridge, diagonal tension cracks occurred in the direction of $45^{\circ}$ to outer side of the girder after the temporary bent supported on the lower part of the upper slab and the secondary strand is tensioned on the girder. Researches on stress distribution and burst crack behavior of pre-stress anchorage has been conducted, it is difficult to analyze an obvious cause due to difference between actual shape and boundary condition. This study performed 3D frame analysis with additional boundary condition of temporary bent, the maximum compression stress occurred in the girder and there was a limit to identify the cause. It performed 3D Solid analysis with LUSAS 16.1 and the maximum principal tensile stress occurred at the boundary between the girder and the slab. As analyzing required reinforcement quantity at obtuse angle of the girder with the maximum principal tensile stress and directional cosine, reinforcement quantity was insufficient. Additional bridges have increased reinforcement quantity and extended area and crack was not occurred. It is expected that cracks on the girder during construction could be controlled by applying the proposed method to PSC-Edge Rahmen Bridge.

  • Investigations of low-rice unbounded reinforced concrete shear walls with or without openings are performed with comparison of analytical and experimental results. Theoretical analysis is based on nonlinear finite element algorithm, which incorporates concrete failure criterion and nonlinear constitutive relationships. Studios focus on the effects of height-to-length ratio of shear walls, opening ratio, horizontal and vertical reinforcement radios, and diagonal reinforcement. Analytical solutions conform well with experimental results. Equations for cracking, yielding and ultimate loads with corresponding lateral displacements are derived by regression using analytical results and experimental data. Also, failure modes of low-rise unbounded shear walls are theoretically investigated. An explanation of change in failure mode is ascertained by comparing analytical results and ACI code equations. Shear-flexural failure can be obtained with additional flexural reinforcement to increase a wall's capacity. This concept leads to a design method of reducing flexural reinforcement in low-rise bounded solid shear wall's. Avoidance of shear failure as well as less reinforcement congestion leer these walls is expected.

  • This paper presents a preliminary study on the influence of material ductility on diagonal tension behavior of shear-wall panels. There have been a number of previous studies, which suggest that the use of high ductile material such as ECC (Engineered Cementitious Composite) significantly enhanced shear capacity of structural elements even without shear reinforcements involved. The present study emphasizes increased shear capacity of shear-wall panels by employing a unique strain-hardening ECC reinforced with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) short random fibers. Normal concrete was adopted as the reference material. Experimental investigation was performed to assess the failure mode of shear-wall panels subjected to knife-edge loading. The results from experiments show that ECC panels exhibit a more ductile failure mode and higher shear capacity when compared to ordinary concrete panels. The superior ductility of ECC was clearly reflected by micro-crack development, suppressing the localized drastic fracture typically observed in concrete specimen. This enhanced structural performance indicates that the application of ECC for a in-filled frame panel can be effective in enhancing seismic resistance of an existing frame in service.

  • The KCI-12 and ACI 318-14 design codes limit the maximum yield strength of shear reinforcement to prevent concrete compressive crushing before the yielding of shear reinforcement. The maximum yield strength of shear reinforcement is limited to 420 MPa in the ACI 318-14 design code, while limited to 500 MPa in the KCI-12 design code. A total of eight post-tensioning prestressed concrete beams with high strength shear reinforcement were tested to observe the shear behavior of PSC beams and the applicability of the high strength reinforcement was thus assessed. In the all PSC beam specimens that used stirrups greater than maximum yield strength of shear reinforcement required by the ACI 318-14 design code, the shear reinforcement reached their yield strains. The observed shear strength of tested eight PSC beams was greater than the calculated ones by the KCI-12 design codes. In addition, the diagonal crack width of all specimens at the service load was smaller than the crack width required by the ACI 224 committee. The experimental and analytical results indicate that the limitation on the yield strength of shear reinforcement in the ACI 318-14 design code is somewhat under-estimated and needs to be increased for high strength concrete. Also the application of high strength materials to PSC is available with respect to strength and serviceability.

  • The Suljeongri east three-story stone pagoda in Changnyeong (National Treasure No. 34) has been damaged mainly by lots of cracks. The stones used for this pagoda are medium-granied equigranular pinkish biotite granite. Measured magnetic susceptibility values are of from 2 to 9 (${\times}10^{-3}$ SI unit). From the ${\gamma}$-ray spectrometer mesurement K, eU, and eTh contents of the stones are 3 to 7%, 8 to 19 ppm, and 11 to 35 ppm, respectively. Comparing the petrographical and chemical characteristics between the stones of the pagoda and the country rocks near Suljeongri, it is suggested that the most similar rock could be equigranular biotite granite in the western slope of the Mt. Hwawangsan. Vertical, horizontal and diagonal cracks are intensely developed at the lower part of the stone pagoda. Biotite granite has intrinsic microcracks defined as rift and grain rock cleavages. Both rock cleavages are assumed to have led to the crack growth and consequent mechanical damage of the pagoda. It seems that vertical cracks have been grown parallel to the principal compressional stress, and that horizontal cracks to the reacting tensional stress. Diagonal cracks seems likely to have been resulted from conjugate rift and grain rock cleavages.

  • With the increasing tendency to construct high rise reinforced concrete building~i, it is required to use high strength materIals, smaller member sections, and larger reinforcing bars, I t is generally recognized that under severe seismic loads beam column jomts may become more critical structural components than other structural elements. In a ductile momentresistmg reinforced concrete frame, the connection of bearncolumn must be capable of resistll1g the large lateral forces caused by seismic actions, The purpose of this experimental study is to evaluate and ll1vestigate the earthquake resistant perform ance of beam-colurrm subassemblies constructed with high-strength concrete cast by the concrete of com¬pressive strength of 700kg / cm2 subjected to reversed cyclic loadings. New approaches for moving the plastic hinging zone away from the column face and preventing the di¬agonal crack in the joint region are adopted to advance the earthquake-resistant performance of beam-column subassemblies using high-strengh concrete under severe earthquake-type loading. Exper¬imental results indicate that the modified new details which are introduced by intermediate reinforcement in the beam over a specific beam length adjacent to the joint are able to attain the stable hysteretic behavior and the enhancement of earthquake-resistant performance. • This study reports the details of the finite element analysis of eleven shear critical partially prestressed concrete T-beams having steel fibers over partial or full depth. Prestressed concrete T-beams having a shear span to depth ratio of 2.65 and 1.59 and failing in the shear have been analyzed using 'ANSYS'. The 'ANSYS' model accounts for the nonlinear phenomenon, such as, bond-slip of longitudinal reinforcements, post-cracking tensile stiffness of the concrete, stress transfer across the cracked blocks of the concrete and load sustenance through the bridging of steel fibers at crack interface. The concrete is modeled using 'SOLID65'-eight-node brick element, which is capable of simulating the cracking and crushing behavior of brittle materials. The reinforcements such as deformed bars, prestressing wires and steel fibers have been modeled discretely using 'LINK8' - 3D spar element. The slip between the reinforcement (rebar, fibers) and the concrete has been modeled using a 'COMBIN39'-non-linear spring element connecting the nodes of the 'LINK8' element representing the reinforcement and nodes of the 'SOLID65' elements representing the concrete. The 'ANSYS' model correctly predicted the diagonal tension failure and shear compression failure of prestressed concrete beams observed in the experiment. The capability of the model to capture the critical crack regions, loads and deflections for various types of shear failures in prestressed concrete beam has been illustrated.

  • In seismic design, hollow section concrete columns offer advantages by reducing the weight and seismic mass compared to concrete section RC bridge columns. However, the flexure-shear behavior and spirals strain of hollow section concrete columns are not well-understood. Octagonal RC bridge columns of a small-scale model were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. The volumetric ratio of the transverse spiral hoop of all specimens is 0.00206. The test results showed that the structural performance of the hollow specimen, such as the initial crack pattern, initial stiffness, and diagonal crack pattern, was comparable to that of the solid specimen. However, the lateral strength and ultimate displacement of the hollow specimen noticeably decreased after the drift ratio of 3%. The columns showed flexure-shear failure at the final stage. Analytical and experimental investigations are presented in this study to understand a correlation confinement steel ratio with neutral axis and a correlation between the strain of spirals and the shear resistance capacity of steel in hollow and solid section concrete columns. Furthermore, shear strength components (Vc, V, Vp) and concrete stress were investigated.

  • The acoustic emission(AE) behavior of reinforced concrete slab under flexural loading was investigated to assess the integrity. This study was aimed at identifying the characteristics of AE response associated with damage development. By applying cyclic loading in various load steps, it was able to differentiate each AE source such as distributed micro crack initiation, friction, flexural crack and localized diagonal tension crack. The secondary peak and the change of AE hit rate gave valuable criteria fur assessment. From the analysis of the felicity ratio, furthermore, it was shown that this values can be used for evaluating the degree of concrete damage. Based on the experimental results, this approach for practical AE application may provide a promising method for estimating the level of damage and distress in concrete structures.
