The land treatment of sewage sludge is necessary because sewage sludge is increasing year by year. Therefore the research of sewage sludge solidification is underway as one of the land treatment methods. However, the problem with existing sewage sludge solidification is that the moisture content of sewage sludge is high and the dewaterability is low. Because of high drying cost the efficiency of energy production is low and the calorific value is insufficient. So the disposer is supplied with a filtration and caloric aid for improving dewaterability and calorific value. In this study, it is aimed to improve the fuel value of sewage sludge by confirming the feasibility of waste wood as a filtration and caloric aid. The dewaterability was measured by CST-test and the calorific value was measured by bomb calorimeter. As a result the dewaterability and calorific value are improved in all of the samples. The dewaterability was improved as the waste wood was added in the sewage sludge. By adjusting the waste wood adding rate into the sewage sludge the dewaterability and calorific value of sewage sludge will be improved. This study confirmed possibility of the waste wood used as filtration and caloric aid.

In this study, a series of experiment was carried to improve dewaterability of the sludge produced in a treatment plant, located in Hongcheon, Gangwondo, which has been treating municipal wastewater and livestock wastewater. Optimum sludge mixing ratio and the amount of sludge conditioner were determined. As sludge conditioners, alum and ferric salt were selected and tested. For the measurement of sludge dewaterability, capillary suction time(CST) and the specific resistance were measured, The specific resistance was detemined by running a series of Buchner Funnel Test. Mixing the two sludges at a 50:50 ratio with the addition of 20 mL alum gave the best results in terms of dewaterability. The moisture content decreased by 2% at this condition.
This study investigated improvement to sludge dewaterability and coagulation for sewage treatment plant sludge by using sodium hypochlorite solution (NaOCl), ferric sulfate [$Fe_2(SO_4)_3$] and zeolite. The specific resistance to filtration(SRF), chloride, pH and turbidity were used to evaluate the sludge dewatering behaviors. The results of study were as follows: By varying the amount of NaOCl added the optimum result in terms of enhancement for pretreatment occurred when 34 mg/l of NaOCl was injected. When the total solids concentration of the sludge was 10,000 mg/l, the optimum ferric sulfate dosage for the sludge dewaterability was 150 mg/l and the corresponding SRF was $1.7{\times}10^7sec^2/g$. It was observed that injecting zeolite into sludge was effective in improving the dewaterability of sludge.
Actually, about 45% of total costs for wastewater treatment in a papermaking mill is spent for sludge disposal and the cost of chemicals used to improve the dewaterability of sludge takes much part of it. In order to reduce sludge disposal cost and to improve the efficiency of sludge treatment, it is necessary to minimize the amount of water contained within the sludge and hence to improve the dewaterability of the sludge. The objective of this study was to elucidate the way of improving the dewaterability of sludge. Three types of wastewater from a tissue paper mill, a printing paper mill and a newsprint mill were used and two types of high molecular weight flocculants (anionic PAM and cationic PAM) were used to treat the wastewater. Dewaterability of sludge was evaluated by measuring floc strength.
Sludge minimization from wastewater treatment plant is becoming more important to save disposal costs and to contribute to sustainable development. For the reduction of sludge production, solubilization and dewaterability of sludge are important factors in sludge processing. Ultrasonic treatment has been used to enhance sludge solubility and dewaterability with anaerobic digestion sludge, primary sludge, and activated sludge. At the ultrasonic power of 0.2 kW/L for 1 hour, anaerobic sludge and activated sludge showed higher solubilization efficiency than the primary sludge in terms of COD, proteins, and suspended solids. Ultrasonic treatment decreased sludge dewaterability and sludge settling characteristics up to 720 kJ/L of ultrasonic energy. In conclusion, ultrasonic treatment was effective for sludge solubilization but it deteriorate dewaterability (specific resistance) and settling characteristics (SVI) of sludge at the experimental conditions.
Synthetic organic polyelectrolytes can be used to condition sludges to enhance their dewaterability. Intermittent aerobic digestion is an useful digestion technology and has many advantages like neutral pH, low installation cost and easiness to operation. The objectives of this study were to investigate the dewaterability of intemittent aerobic digestion sludge and to find the relationship between dewaterability and particle size distribution change under the conditioning of intermittent aerobic digestion sludge by cationic polyelectrolyte. Digested sludge from intermittent aerobic digestion was used and cationic polyacrylamide polymer was added as a conditioner. CST(capillary suction time), TTF(time-to-filtration) were tested as a dewaterability index and the number of particle distribution was analyzed using particle size analyzer. The results indicate that cationic polyelectrolytes is useful to enhance dewaterability of intermittent aerobic digestion sludge. Mean particle diameter was increased as polymer dosage increased and its value was reached up to 100 mm on the condition of optimal cationic polymer dosage. CST and TTF are well correlated with mean particle diameter when the weighting order is 1.7. By the optimal conditioning with cationic polymer, particles in the filtrate are also reduced significantly and this means that conditioning is helpful to main stream by reducing SS loading from return flow.
The effects on dewaterability and settlability of wastewater sludge according to acid and ultrasonic pretreatment which was expected to change ECP (exocellular polymers) compounds in the sludge and bulk solution was investigated. Though ECP which attached to the sludge could stimulate coagulation of sludge particles by bridging effect, but ECP in the bulk solution deteriorated dewaterability and settlability of the sludge on the contrary. That is as the pH of the solution was decreased to 3 gradually by acid treatment, proportionally ECP in the bulk solution was attached to the sludge flocs and resulted in improvement of dewaterability and settlability of the sludge. In case of ultrasonic pretreatment, with proportional to the intensity and duration of ultrasonic application, ECP was detached and extracted from sludge flocs and these phenomena deteriorated dewaterability and settlability. Also because of the increasement of minute sludge particles according to ultrasonic, dewaterability became so much the worse.
Industrial and municipal wastewater treatment plants produce large amounts of sludge cakes for final disposal. This problem is an inevitable drawback inherent to the activated sludge process. Both the reduction of the amount of sludge produced and improvement of its dewaterability are presently very important issue also in Korea. So many pre-treatment processes have been developed in order to improve sludge dewatering efficiency. In this study the effects of hydrogen peroxide and paper sludge mixing processes were considered as reasonable alternatives to enhance sludge dewaterability. The CST of sludge was significantly decreased, and dewaterability improved by hydrogen peroxide oxidation treatment. The optimum dosage of hydrogen peroxide was proved to be 10mg/g-TS (when TS of sludge was 2%) with the conditions of pH 4 and only 1~2 minutes of reaction time. The mixing of paper sludge with sewage sludge was turned out to be very effective in reduction of sludge cake; 30% of sludge cake reduction was accomplished. Optimum mixing ratio of paper sludge was about 30%(v/v). This process also could save 25% of polymer to be required. These two alternatives are somewhat realistic, but it was concluded that paper sludge mixing process will be the best choice.
Electro-flotation(EF), a novel sludge thickening method, could improve the dewaterability of activated sludge. The gas(microbubbles) generated during EF decreased the solid-liquid separation time below 1/5 of the time required for gravity sedimentation. In addition, over 90% of the sludge volume reduction could be achieved by EF although the settling characteristics of the sludge was very poor. The SRF(specific resistance to filtration) of the thickened sludge by EF was much lower than that of the sludge thickened by gravity sedimentation. The SRF of the thickened sludge decreased exponentially with increase of gas generation rate of the EF system. Gas generation rate could be controlled by varying the current density of the electrode. Degasing of the microbubbles by vigorous mixing of the thickened sludge layer deteriorated the dewaterability of the sludge. Therefore, it is obvious that the gas bubbles entrapped in the thickened sludge play a key role in the observed dewaterability improvement.
The dewaterability of a sludge can be characterized by two ways: the residual moisture content in the sludge cake after dewatering process, and the filtration of the sludge. Time to filter (TTF) represents filtration processes that are special cases of the flow through a solid matrix concept. TTF characterizes a resistance to filtration. The sludge resistance, in turn, can be subdivided into resistances associated with the solid phase and the liquid phase to evaluate the effect of each of the two phases on sludge dewaterability. In order to determine the dewatering characteristics of the water sludge samples, TTF and zeta potential were measured. For these studies cationic polymer was chosen for water sludge dewatering experiments. The zeta potential of thickener sludges neared from minus values to zero values till 4 days after sampling. The dewaterability of thickener sludges using cationic polymer was deteriorated according to the increase of detention time. As the detention time was increased from 4 to 10 days, the optimal dose of the polymer was increased from 4 to 8mg/L. Therefore, the optimal detention time plays an important part for the dewaterability of a sludge.
