  • Local device-to-device (D2D) communication between two smart mobile devices is becoming increasingly popular. The first key step in starting a D2D communication is to discover and identify the remote target device to establish a link. However, existing device discovery mechanisms either require users to explicitly identify the ID of the target device or rely on inaccurate beamforming technology. This paper presents two novel device identification algorithms using a variety of embedded sensors. The algorithms only require that users to point two devices towards each other. This paper describes the algorithms, analyzes their accuracy using analytical models, and verifies the results using simulations.

  • Low Frequency Active Sonobuoy(hereinafter referred to as LFAS) are being developed in Korea in consideration of compatibility with existing overseas sonobuoys, and a communication device for acoustic signals receiving and operating control of LFAS has been developed. The communication device needs to verify compatibility with the existing Sonobuoy, and for this purpose, the standardized Sonobuoy communication protocol was applied. The communication device is designed/manufactured to transmit the acoustic signal received in real time from the Sonobuoy through VHF band RF communication to the data processing device, and transmit CFS/CSG commands for operation control to the Sonobuoy through UHF band RF communication. In order to verify the manufactured communication device, the communication status and performance were verified by interlocking test through Ultra Electronics' PASS-II equipment and domestically developed electronic device of Sonobuoy. In addition, operability was verified through environmental tests, water tanks, and marine operations. In the future, the communication device of sonobuoy can be used for verification of the Sonobuoy developed in Korea.

  • We developed a communication device for person with serious disability to use slight movement. This device is developed mainly for patients suffering from ALS or a cerebral infarction. They often have communication difficulty because of deterioration of muscle functions. A feature of this device is that slight movements of user's finger, eyes or lips can be detected by using a vision sensor. Due to the features of the vision sensor, it is quite easy even for person with serious disability to use a communication device. By the field test it is confirmed that the vision sensors have superior performances as an input device for communication device. Experiments to use an EMG (electromyography) sensor and a rotary sensor are also tested to compare the performances.

  • Device discovery for D2D (device-to-device) communication enables a device to discover other devices in order to initiate communication with them. Devices should perform the discovery phase using a small quantity of radio resource in a short time and be able to reduce the load of the base station. Legacy device discovery schemes have focused on discovering as many target devices as possible. However, it is not appropriate for peer-to-peer D2D communication scenario. Further, synchronization problems are an important issue for discovery signal transmission. This paper proposes a discovery method that one requesting device discovers a specific target for communication. Multiple antenna beamforming is employed for the synchronization between the base station and a target device. The proposal can reduce the load of the base station using the information that it already maintains and improve the reliability of the device discovery because two times of synchronizations using beamforming among the base station and devices can make the exact discovery of a target device with mobility possible.

  • Mobile communication technology is advancing forward to deliver more connected devices and richer content and applications. The number of subscriptions continues to grow along with an explosive increase in the mobile data traffic demand. Thereby, it creates a significant network capacity shortage concerns for mobile network operators. In order to address this problem, it is essential to increase the network capacity at a low additional cost. The device-to-device (D2D) communication based proximity service is believed to have a promising future mobile communication technology that is capable to create new mobile service opportunities and offload traffic to the eNB. In addition, it is also required to develop new mobile communication services and its business models not only to accommodate the increasing mobile traffic demand but also to foster profitability of mobile business service providers such as the network providers, contents providers and platform providers. In this article, we first analyze current mobile business eco-system in the context of CPNT based value chain. Then, propose service development framework and business model creation methodologies for the device-to-device communication based services in the beyond LTE/LTE-Advanced systems.

  • Recently the interest on device-to-device (D2D) communication has been increased due to the growing popularization of smart phones and tablet PCs. However, existing device identification mechanisms of D2D communication provide a text-based long list of possible devices, which leads the users to avoid to use D2D techniques. In this paper, we propose a location-based device identification technique for D2D communication. This paper describes the algorithm, analyzes its accuracy using analytical models, and verifies the results using computer simulations. The proposed algorithm is more user-friendly and intuitive way than existing D2D techniques.

  • To improve the throughput of Device-to-Device (D2D) communication, we focus on the scenario where D2D pair can reuse multi-channel of cellular communication. However, as sharing same channel with cellular communication can cause interference between D2D communication and cellular communication, a proper interference management is needed. In this paper, we propose interference-based channel allocation to select the channels to be used by D2D communication and a solution from game theory perspective to optimize the D2D communication throughput under multi-channel as well as guarantee the interference from it to cellular network. The simulation results verify the stability of the proposed method.

  • We studied a bilateral switching device for spin transfer torque (STT-MRAM) based on 3D device simulation. Metal/P/N+or Metal/N/P+ junction device with $30{\times}30nm2$ area which is composed of one side schottky junction at Metal/P/N+ and Metal/N/P+ provides sufficient bidirectional current flow to write data by a drain induced barrier lowering (DIBL). In this work, Junction device confirmed that write current is more than 30 uA at 2 V, It is also has high on-off ratio over 105 under read operation. Junction device has good process feasibility because metal material of junction device could have been replaced by bottom layer of MTJ. Therefore, additional process to fabricate two outer terminals is not need. so, it provides simple fabrication procedures. it is expected that Metal/P/N+ or Metal/N/P+ structure with one side schottky junction will be a promising switch device for beyond 30 nm STT-MRAM.
