  • This paper proposes a new haptic cue vehicle accelerator pedal device using magnetorheological(MR) brake. As a first step, an MR fluid-based haptic cue device is devised to be capable of rotary motion of accelerator pedal. Under consideration of spatial limitation, design parameters are optimally determined to maximize control torque using finite element method. The proposed haptic cue device is then manufactured and integrated with accelerator pedal. Its field-dependant torque is experimentally evaluated. Vehicle system emulating gear shifting and engine speed is constructed in virtual environment and communicated with the haptic cue device. Haptic cue algorithm using the feed-forward control algorithm is formulated to achieve optimal gear shifting in driving. Control performances are experimentally evaluated via feed-forward control strategy and presented in time domain.

  • In this paper, analysis, design, control and prototype construction of a wearable wire-driven haptic interface called HapticPen is discussed. This device can be considered as a wire driven parallel mechanism which three wires are attached to a pen-tip. Wire tensions are provided utilizing three DC servo motors which are attached to a solid frame on the user's body. This device is designed as input as well as output device for a wearable PC. User can write letters or figures on a virtual plate in space. Pen-tip trajectory in space is calculated using motor encoders and force feedback resulting from contact between pen and virtual plate is provided for constraining the pen-tip motion onto the virtual plane that can be easily setup by arbitrary non-collinear three points in space. In this paper kinematic model, workspace analysis, application analysis, control and prototype construction of this device are presented. Preliminary experiments on handwriting in space show feasibility of the proposed device in wearable environments.

  • Five key items were used to create an economical and physically small impact test device for concrete panels subject to high speed collision: an air-compressive system, carbon steel pipe, solenoid valve, carrier and carrier-blocking, and velocity measurement device. The impact test device developed can launch a 20 mm steel spherical projectile at over 200 m/s with measured impact and/or residual velocity. Purpose for development was to conduct preliminary materials tests, prior to large-scale collision experiments. In this paper, the design process of the small impact test device was discussed in detail.

  • In the case of the flash memory, various kinds of transistors and the wide range of operation voltage are necessary to achieve the read/write operations. Therefore, the characteristics of transistors are measured in the silicon for the circuit design, and the test vehicle run must be processed. In this study, an efficient design flow is suggested using TCAD tools. The test vehicle is replaced with well-calibrated TCAD simulation. First, the calibration methodology is introduced and tested for flash memory device. The calibration errors are less than 5% of a full chip operation, which is accepted by the designers. The results of the calibration were used to predict I-V curves and model parameter of the various transistors for the design of flash device.

  • Studies to augment emotion and immersion in multimedia content through olfactory stimulation are being increasingly conducted in the past two decades, and a variety of scent devices have been developed. Most of the scent devices are very large and heavy; consequently, they are installed on a table rather than being attached to the Head-mounted Display (HMD). Even if such devices are mounted on the HMD, it is not possible to control the scent density because of the size limitation, and it is not easy to be immersed in the experience because of the noise caused by the scent device. In order for an actual virtual reality or an augmented reality system to work efficiently with the scent device, three conditions - noiseless, a compact design, and concentration control- must be satisfied. In this study, we design a scent device that satisfies these three conditions. By using a miniature piezoelectric pump, a small size scent device is designed so that it can be easily attached to the lower end of the HMD, and hardly any noise is generated. Moreover, it is possible to control the concentration of the scent by controlling the piezoelectric pump using amplitude and frequency.

  • This paper deals with a Capstone Design project which is a wearable haptic wrist massage device design carried out within the 'Designeer' education program. Following design thinking process is recommended throughout a year in order to ensure a desirable, feasible and viable product. Dealing with a real problem of the field requires open-minded and flexible attitudes both from students and professors. Integrating design in an engineering project does not mean always making better looking product. User experience design allows wider opportunity to engineers to deal with design. A case study of developing a wearable wrist massage device shown in this paper demonstrate haptic design and how haptic properties can be optimized to offer best user experience of hand massaging. This study identified that starting lateral pressure movements from the center in larger area using air tubes gives better feeling as self-massage using wrist wearing devices.

  • This study proposes an RCS composite damping device that can achieve seismic reinforcement of existing buildings by dissipating energy by inelastic deformation. A series of experiments assessing the performances of the rubber core pad, hysteretic steel slit damping device, and hybrid RCS damping device were conducted. The results showed that the ratios of the deviations to the mean values satisfied the domestic damping-device conformity condition for the load at maximum device displacement in each direction, at the maximum force and minimum force at zero displacement, as well as the hysteresis curve area. In addition, three analysis models based on load-displacement characteristics were proposed for application to seismic reinforcement design. In addition, the validity of the three proposed models was confirmed, as they simulated the experimental results well. Meanwhile, as the shear deformation of the rubber-core pad increased, the hysteretic behavior of super-elasticity greatly increased the horizontal force of the damping device. Therefore, limiting the allowable displacement during design is deemed to be necessary.

  • Wearable device, next generation smart device, is consistently growing. The flexible display will be a kind of display in the wearable device. The flexible display technology is now evolving with end-user requirement such as portability and easy installation. Previous wearable display products still have some difficulties in manufacturing and in flexibility whole device. But it can be a flexible display with LED device and utilized in commercial area. In this paper, we propose a driver to control the LED display and implement a flexible LED display system.
