  • In this paper, we have developed bus load forecasting system (BUSLOF) based on Windows 95. It has been developed for the secure operation of electric power system. It forecasts regional load and bus load using regional distribution factor(RDF) and bus distribution factor (BDF) which are calculated from bus load in the past. It is equipped with graphic user interface(GUI) which enables a user to easily access to the system. The performance of the developed system is estimated in sample data.

  • This paper describes a fuzzy-based system for analyzing the stress intensity factors (SIFs) of three-dimensional (3D) cracks. A geometry model, i.e. a solid containing one or several 3D cracks is defined. Several distributions of local node density are chosen, and then automatically superposed on one another over the geometry model by using the fuzzy knowledge processing. Nodes are generated by the bucketing method, and ten-coded quadratic tetrahedral solid elements are generated by the Delaunay triangulation techniques. The singular elements such that the mid-point nodes near crack front are shifted at the quarter-points, and these are automatically placed along the 3D crack front. The complete finite element(FE) model is generated, and a stress analysis is performed. The SIFs are calculated using the displacement extrapolation method. To demonstrate practical performances of the present system, semi-elliptical surface cracks in a inhomogeneous plate subjected to uniform tension are solved.

  • The germline stem cells of the Drosophila ovary continuously produce eggs throughout the life-span. Intricate regulation of stemness and differentiation is critical to this continuous production. The translational regulator Nos is an intrinsic factor that is required for maintenance of stemness in germline stem cells. Nos expression is reduced in differentiating cells at the post-transcriptional level by diverse translational regulators. However, molecular mechanisms underlying Nos repression are not completely understood. Through three distinct protein-protein interaction experiments, we identified specific molecular interactions between translational regulators involved in Nos repression. Our findings suggest a model in which protein complexes assemble on the 3' untranslated region of Nos mRNA in order to regulate Nos expression at the post-transcriptional level.

  • The balance shaft housing in the recent engines tends to have the high cycle fatigue crack caused by increased engine power. In this paper, a CAE procedure is introduced to predict the durability of the balance shaft housing. The procedure is performed through two analysis steps. In the first step, the multibody dynamic simulation is used to obtain more accurate loading boundary conditions applied to the finite element model for the following step. Next, the finite element analysis is performed to predict the durability of the balance shaft housing through the calculation of the safety factor. Through this CAE procedure, the revised balance shaft housing was developed to improve the durability. And the durability of the housing was confirmed experimentally.

  • In this paper, a new design using a simulation method was proposed. And to estimate its validity, various electronic and optical data were measured after making a 150[W] electronic ballast for high pressure sodium lamps. Using PSpice 9.1, the best solutions of various parameters such as the resonant frequency, the lamp output voltage, and the current of the electronic ballast were obtained. The power factor of the system was 99.8[%], the crest factor 1.44, the THD 4.99[%], and the weight 0.5[kg]. These are very good characteristics compared with a conventional HPS Lamp ballast.

  • Currently, a life cycle cost estimates(LCCE) is the most important factor in weapon system acquisition process. However, operation and maintenance(O&M) cost related studies are insufficient from the previous literature survey. O&M cost consists of various cost factors such a man power, maintenance and direct & indirect support costs. We have known that spare-parts cost is a key factor in the O&M cost. In this paper, we developed the spare-parts cost estimating relationships(CERs) of fixed-wing aircraft and armored vehicle weapon systems which include 4 historical cost drivers ; system acquisition cost, deterioration rate, localization rate, mission characteristic. Furthermore, we proposed the application methodologies that O&M cost estimating, total life cycle cost estimating and determination of the economic life using the spare-parts CERs.

  • Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is an extremely rare and life-threatening disorder. Typical HUS is often caused by Shiga toxin-positive Escherichia coli, while aHUS is caused by dysregulation of the alternative pathway of the complement system in association with genetic abnormalities or development of autoantibodies. Eculizumab, a humanized anti-complement 5 monoclonal antibody, is recommended for the treatment of aHUS, but its long-term safety and efficacy in pediatric patients remain under review. In this paper, we report a pediatric case of aHUS with anti-complement factor H autoantibodies, who was treated successfully with eculizumab.

  • This paper presents the development of methodologies using Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM) for cracked unstiffened and concentric stiffened panels subjected to constant amplitude tensile fatigue loading. XFEM formulations such as level set representation of crack, element stiffness matrix formulation and numerical integration are presented and implemented in MATLAB software. Stiffeners of the stiffened panels are modelled using truss elements such that nodes of the panel and nodes of the stiffener coincide. Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) is computed from the solutions of XFEM using domain form of interaction integral. Paris's crack growth law is used to compute the number of fatigue cycles up to failure. Numerical investigations are carried out to model the crack growth, estimate the remaining life and generate damage tolerant curves. From the studies, it is observed that (i) there is a considerable increase in fatigue life of stiffened panels compared to unstiffened panels and (ii) as the external applied stress is decreasing number of fatigue life cycles taken by the component is increasing.

  • The amplitude error of phase modulator used in closed-loop fiber optic gyroscope has occurred by the temperature dependency of the electro-optic coefficient, and also can be due to the square-wave dither signal which is generally applied for eliminating the deadzone. This error can cause bias drift and scale factor error. This paper analyzes the temperature dependency of the modulation amplitude and the relationship with the scale factor of the gyroscope, and deals with an amplitude control method. The error calculation logic considering the dither signal is implemented on the signal processing module. The result of experiments from a prototype gyroscope shows the effect of the modulation amplitude control and a considerable improvement on performances.
