In order to estimate the necessity of refrigerated storage of fresh seafood for short-term storage, and evaluate the effect of refrigerated storage on pen shell Atrina pectinata and clam Ruditapes philippinarum collected from Jang-su of Deukryang Bay and I-mok of Sunchen Bay in South Korea, the counts of coliform, Escherichia coli and total aerobic bacteria in A. pectinata and R. philippinarum under non-refrigerated $(28{\pm}1^{\circ}C)$ and refrigerated storage conditions $(4{\pm}1^{\circ}C)$ were determined. The results indicated that the storage at temperature of $4^{\circ}C$ possessed significant effects on inhibiting bacterial growth in live seafood. And refrigerated storage had different effect on A. pectinata and R. philippinarum. Different species and culture environments significantly influenced the initial and ultima bacteria counts. This study confirmed that refrigerated storage for short-term storage of live seafood was necessary, and indicated that the effect of refrigerated storage was influenced by comprehensive effectors.
It was studied the relationship between the red tide occurrence and the meteorological and oceanographic factors, the choice of potential area for red tide occurrence, and the satellite monitoring for red tide. From 1990 through 2001, the red tide continuously appeared and the number of red tide occurrence increased every year. Then, the red tide bloomed during the periods of July and August. An important meteorological factor governing the mechanisms of the increasing in number of red tide occurrence was heavy precipitation. Oceanographic factors of favorable marine environmental conditions for the red tide formation included warm water temperature, low salinity, high suspended solid, low phosphorus, low nitrogen. A common condition for the red tide occurrence was heavy precipitation 2∼4 days earlier, and the favorable conditions for the red tide formation were high air temperature, proper sunshine and light winds for the day in red tide occurrence. From satellite images, it was possible to monitor the spatial distributions and concentrations of red tide. It was founded the potential areas for red tide occurrence in August 2000 by CIS conception: Yeosu∼Dolsan coast, Gamak bay, Namhae coast, Marado coast, Goheung coast, Deukryang bay, respectively.
An investigation was conducted to determine limiting nutrients in the bay systems of the southern coastal area of Korea. The elemental composition of C, N, and P in suspended particulate matter was monitored nearly monthly in Chinhae and Koje Bays and seasonally in Deukryang Bay for 2 years. Atomic C:N ratio in particulate matter ranges from 4.3 to 9.6, typical of marine phytoplankton. C:P and N:P ratios vary from the Redfield ratio to 229 (C:P) and 37 (N:P). A constant C:N ratio of 6.87 from regression of particulate C and N concentrations demonstrates that the particulate matter in the systems originates from primary production. C:P and N:P ratios from regression of C on P and N on P are well associated with changes in salinity. The low N:P ratio of 13.1 implies N limitation in the environments of the systems. This seems to result from the low N:P ratio of nutrients released across sediment-water interface. Phytoplankton response, expressed here as the increase of chlorophyll a, to N addition also verifies N limitation for phytoplankton communities. In heavy rainfall season (from June to September), the addition of excessive N via streams into the stratified coastal water proliferates phytoplankton greatly. During the phytoplankton blooms, C:P and N:P ratios are much higher than the Redfield ratio, implying P limitation. This results from the high N:P ratio in nutrients supplied from stream waters. Strong stratification during the blooms also interrupts the supply of nutrients, particularly p, from bottom waters. Dependent upon precipitation, this tendency shows great inter-annual variation.

Despite the ecological importance of seagrass beds, their distributional information in Korean coastal waters is insufficient. Therefore, we used hydroacoustic system to collect accurate bathymetry and classification of seagrass, and Kompsat-2 (4 m spatial resolution) image for detection of seagrass beds at Deukryang Bay, Korea. The accuracy of Kompsat-2 image classification was evaluated using hydracoustic survey result using error matrix and Kappa value. The total area of seagrass beds from satellite image classification was underestimated compared to the hydroacoustic survey, estimated 3.9 and $4.5km^2$ from satellite image and hydroacoustic data, respectively. Nonetheless, the accuracy of Kompsat-2 image classification over hydroacoustic-based method showing 90% (Kappa=0.85) for the three class maps (seagrass, unvegetated seawater and aquaculture). The agreement between the satellite image classification and the hydroacoustic result was 77.1% (the seagrass presence/absence map). From our result of satellite image classification, Kompsat-2 image is suitable for mapping seagrass beds with high accuracy and non-destructive method. For more accurate information, more researches with a variety of high-resolution satellite image will be preceded.

On the relationship between the red tide occurrence and the oceanographic factors in the middle coastal area in the South Sea of Korea, the favorable oceanographic conditions for the red tide formation are considered as follows; the calm weather increases sea water temperature in summer and early-fall which the red tide occurs frequently, and the heavy precipitation brings some riverine water to ween: low salinity, high suspended solid, low phosphorus and high nitrogen, respectively. We decided the potential areas in the coastal zones vulnerable to the red tide occurrence based on the limited factors controlling the growth of phytoplankton. By using GIS through the overlap for three subject figures (phosphorus, nitrogen and suspended solids), it was founded that the potential areas are the Yeosu∼Dolsan coast, the Gamak bay, the Namhae coast, the Narodo coast, the Goheung and Deukryang bay. This result has very well coincided to the results of the satellite and in-situ data.
This study was conducted to survey the population of water birds wintering at the seven coastal wetlands of Jeollanam province including Suncheon Bay and Yeongsan Lake, from 2000 through 2003. The 90 species and 857,570 individuals in total were sighted at the seven survey sites. We classified the wintering water birds into seventeen groups of taxa based on the similar ecological attributes, among which, eight groups were found to inhabit the water surface or riparian areas. Classified groups that showed higher rate of using bay areas than that of lake areas were in the order of waders, gulls and swans. On the other hand, the groups that showed higher rate of using lake areas than that of using bay areas were revealed in the order of dabbling ducks, grebes and geese. In conclusion, there was a difference in the pattern between the two classified groups. As a result of the UPGMA cluster analysis using CCs ($S{\varnothing}rensen'a$ index of similarity and Ro (Horn's index of community overlap), the results showed that Suncheon Bay had the most unique species formation out of the seven areas. Bay and lake areas were different from each other in the formation of species and Individuals. As a result of combining the index rank according to the maximum aggregate count, the Suncheon Bay is ranked the highest in importance of the habitats for water birds, followed by the order of Boseong-Deukryang Bay, Gangjin Bay, Gocehongam Lake, Geumho Lake, Yeomam Lake, and Yeongsan Lake. Considered overall, the importance of the bay areas was relatively higher than that of reclaimed lake areas.

Salinity, DIN, DIP, DIN/DIP and indigenous algal assay were determined to estimate the limiting nutrient for phytoplankton growth in Gwangyang Bay, South Sea of Korea. Seawater samples were collected at surface and bot-tom water in 4 November 1999 (dry season) and 2 September 2000 (after heavy rain). In 4 November 1999, the salinity, DIN, DIP and DIN/DIP were 29.92 psu, 13.59 ${\mu}M$, 3.41 ${\mu}M$ and 4.14 respectively. In 2 September 2000, These values were 24.62 psu, 27.77 ${\mu}M$, 2.82 ${\mu}M$ and 9.79 respectively. The DIN and DIP concentrations in this study were higher than Deukryang, Yeoja and Gamak Bay, South Sea of Korea. Especially, DIP concentration was 8 times high compared to Deutryang, Yeoja and Gamak Bay. The main sources of nitrogen seem to be freshwater runoff from Somjin River and industrial wastewater. But, the main sources of phosphorus seem to be industrial wastewater around Gwangyang Bay. The limiting nutrient was nitrogen at all station in 4 November 1999. The limiting nutrient was also nitrogen in 2 September 2000 in spite of heavy rain observed because of relatively much volume of phosphorus sup-plied from point sources than nitrogen. In case of below 20 psu in salinity by heavy rain, the limiting nutrient willbe shift from nitrogen to phosphorus at some area of Somjin River estuary. But the limiting nutrient will be never shift to phosphorus throughout Gwangyang Bay, eastern coast of Yeoja and Dolsan because of much volume of phosphorus runoff from point source in coastal area of Gwangyang Bay.
Nutrients and trace metals of copper and nickel were investigated in the inner part of Deukryang Bay (southern coast of Korea) during 1980-81. This region is characterized as permanently well-mixed coastal waters. Because of this hydrographic condition, nutrients and trace metals showed interesting features in their seasonal cycles. The concentrations of dissolved nutrients and dissolved trace metals were higher in fall and winter than in spring and summer, while the concentrations of suspended particulates and particulate trace metals were much higher in winter than the rest of the year. Seasonal changes of nutrients suggest that the addition of nutrients via freshwater runoff during the late summer enhanced phytoplankton growth and subsequently caused phytoplankton blooms in winter. Depletion of nitrate seems to terminate phytoplankton bloom in this region, and copper and nickel appeared to be controlled by the in situ primary production.

This study deals with the relationship between the red tide occurrence and the meteorological and marine factors, the prediction of areas where the red tide is likely to occur based on the information, and the satellite monitoring for the red tide in mid-South Sea of Korea. From 1990 to 2001, the red tide was observed every year and the number of occurrences increased as well. The red tide mostly occurred in July, August, and September. The most important meteorological factor governing the mechanisms of the increase in the number of red tide occurrences is found to be a heavy precipitation. It was found that the favorable marine environmental conditions for the red tide formation are some of marine factors such as the warm water temperature, the low salinity, the high suspended solid, the low phosphorus, and the low nitrogen. The necessary conditions for the red tide occurrence are found to be the heavy precipitation (23.4-54.5 mm) for 2∼4 days, the warm temperature $(24.6∼25.9^{\circ}C)$, proper sunshine (2∼10.3 h), and light winds (2∼4.6 m/s & SW) for the day in red tide occurrence. It was possible to monitor the spatial distributions and concentration of the red tide using the satellite images. It was found that the likely areas for red tide occurrence in August 2000 were Yosu - Dolsan coast, Gamak bay, Namhae coast, Marado coast, Goheung coast, and Deukryang bay.
