  • A method for the determination of cobalt(Ⅱ) by differential pulse voltammetry using a carbon paste electrode constructed by incorporating 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol(PAN) into a conventional carbon paste mixture composed of graphite powder and Nujol oil has been developed. Several influencing factors for the determination of cobalt(Ⅱ) were studied in detail and the optimum analytical conditions were found to be as follows: pH, 4.6; composition of electrode, 20%; temperature of deposition, 43 ℃; time of preconcentration, 15 min. Regeneration of the electrode surface for the continuous uses of the electrode was achieved by exposing the carbon paste electrode to an acidic solution. Response of the electrode was reproducible for the uses of five times and the relative standard deviations were 6.7 and 4.6% for 2.0×10-5 M and 4.0×10-6 M cobalt(Ⅱ), respectively. The calibration curve for cobalt(Ⅱ) obtained by differential pulse voltammetry was divided into two linear ranges of 1.7× 10-6-1.3×10-4 M and 2.0×10-7-8.0×10-7 M. The detection limit was estimated to be 1.3×10-7 M. The effects of coexisting ions were also investigated to test the applicability of the proposed method to the determination of cobalt(Ⅱ) in real samples.

  • A new method of cobalt determination has been developed by employing ethylenediamine tetrabutyl acetate(EDTA-butyl ester) synthesized from EDTA and Butyl alcohol. The synthesized EDTA ester dissolved in butyl alcohol extracts various metal ions from aqueous solutions. Cobaltous ion extracted into organic phase containing EDTA ester to form Co (II)-EDTA butyl ester complex is back extracted into alkaline aqueous phase forming a stable pink colored complex of Co (III). The optimum condition for spectrophotometric determination of cobalt via the new complex has been established. The absorption peak occurs at 540$m{\mu}$ and Beer's law was obeyed over the concentration range of 0∼50 ${\mu}g/ml$ of cobalt.

  • A rapid, simple and sensitive spectrophotometric method was developed for the determination of cobalt(II) using 2-hydroxy-3-methoxy benzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (HMBATSC) as a analytical reagent. The metal ion in aqueous medium forms a brown coloured complex with HMBATSC at pH 6.0. The complex has two absorption maxima at 375 nm and 390 nm. At 375 nm, the reagent shows considerable absorbance, while at 390 nm the reagent does not shows appreciable absorbance. Hence, analytical studies were carried out at 390 nm. Beer's law is obeyed in the range of 0.059-2.357 μg ml-1 of Co(II). The molar absorptivity and Sandall's sensitivity of the method are 2.74×104 l mol-1 cm-1 and 0.0024 μg cm-2 respectively. The interference of various diverse ions has been studied. The complex has 1:2 [Co(II)- HMBATSC] stoichiometry. A method for the determination of cobalt(II) by second order derivative spectrophotometry has also been proposed. The proposed methods were applied for the determination of cobalt(II) in alloy steels, vitamin B12 and in some biological samples.

  • Determination of cobalt(III) ion with a perfluorinated sulfonated polymer-ethylenediamine (nafion-en) modified glassy carbon electrode is studied. It is based on the chemical reactivity of an immobilized layer, nafion-en, to yield complex $[Co(en)_3]^{3+}$. The reduction peak potential by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) is observed at $-0.437{\pm}0.047$ V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The linear calibration curve is obtained in cobalt(III) ion concentration range $1.0{\times}10^{-8}{\sim}1.0{\times}10^{-3}M$ ($5.893{\times}10^{-12}{\sim}5.893{\times}10^{-5}g/mL$).

  • Spectrophotometric determination of cobalt by flow injection method is described. 2-(5-Bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-(N-propyl-N-sulfopropylamino) aniline rapidly forms a water-soluble complex with cobalt in $NH_3-NH_4Cl$ buffer solution at pH 10.5. The absorption maxima of this complex is at 545 nm with molar absorptivity of $58000L\;mol^{-1}\;cm^{-1}$. The calibration curve of cobalt is linear over the range of 0.1 to 0.6ppm and the detection limit is 25ppb. The relative standard deviation is ${\pm}0.72%$ for 0.5ppm and the sampling rate is $60samples\;hr^{-1}$. The interfering effect of some cations and anions was investigated. Ni(II), Cu(II), Fe(III) and $CN^-$ interfered severely. The interfering effect of these matallic ions could be decreased by adding $1.0{\times}10^{-3}M$ EDTA solution to the carrier stream.

  • A determination method of trace nickel and cobalt in water samples was studied and developed by adsorbing their complexes on ion exchange resin suspension. The analytical ions were formed as complexes with a ligand of APDC (ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate) and adsorbed on anion exchange resin of Dowex 2-X8. After the suspension was filtered out with membrane filter, the complexes were dissolved in HCl solution by an ultrasonic vibrator for ET-AAS determination. Several conditions were optimized as followings. pH of sample solution: 5.0, amount of ligand APDC: more than 430 times in mole ratio, the type and concentration of acid: 0.1 M HCl, and vibration time: 7 minutes. The addition of palladium in the HCl solution could improve the reproducibility and sensitivity by a matrix modification in the absorbance measurement. This procedure was applied for the analysis of three kinds of real water samples. The detection limits equivalent to 3 times standard deviation of blank were Co 0.36 ng/mL and Ni 0.27 ng/mL and recoveries in spiked samples were 99-102% for cobalt and 100-105% for nickel.

  • Nuclear fusion may be among the strongest sustainable ways to replace fossil fuels because it does not contribute to acid rain or global warming. In this context, activated cobalt materials in corrosion products for fusion energy are significant in determination of dose levels during maintenance after a coolant leak in a nuclear fusion reactor. Therefore, cross-section studies on cobalt material are very important for fusion reactor design. In this article, the excitation functions of some nuclear reaction channels induced by proton particles on $^{59}Co$ structural material were predicted using different models. The nuclear level densities were calculated using different choices of available level density models in ALICE/ASH code. Finally, the newly calculated cross sections for the investigated nuclear reactions are compared with the experimental values and TENDL data based on TALYS nuclear code.

  • A method on the determination of Co(II) after adsorbing of Co(II) on 2-mercaptobenzothiazole-loaded silica gel was studied. The conditions on the separation of Co(II) such as pH of solution, the amount of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, the flow rate for adsorption, and the desorption solvent were optimized to 9.0, 0.05 g, $10mL\;min^{-1}$ and 1 M $HNO_3$ in ethanol, respectively. Under these optimum conditions, the calibration curve of Co(II) was obtained over concentration range of $2{\sim}120ng\;mL^{-1}$. The detection limit was $0.6ng\;mL^{-1}$. Recovery yields of Co(II) in various natural water samples were more than 90%.
