This paper contains of descriptions of deterioration diagnosis of the surface and a coating layer for maintenance managements of large spatial structures with membrane structure. Membrane is a roofing material of the structures that its performance of durability including its performance of chemical resistance and corrosive resistance is considered to be highly important. In general, the items of diagnosis for maintenance managements such as membrane extensively include the diagnosis of deterioration of the membrane surface, of a coating layer of membrane, the diagnosis of deterioration between a coating layer and fiber, of overall surface of membrane, of the class of ropes, of reinforced belts, and of the cover of rubber. The object of this study that needs maintenance managements of the membrane with PVC and FIFE which are commonly used and shows the diagnosis results of deterioration of the surface and a coating layer.
Calcium carbonate stone deterioration has been intensified in urban area, mainly due to the action of atmospheric pollutant. Samples from the black surface layer were examined under petrographic and scanning electron microscope, coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analyser X-ray fluorescence and X-ray diffraction analysis was also carried out for chemical composition and mineral phase analysis, respectively. Moreover, sulphur isotope ratio was measured, in order to identify the origin of sulphate compounds in the black surface layer. Optical and electronic petrographic analysis indicated that gypsum and Quartz were contained in the black surface layer and led to microcracks. Microstructure and chemical composition analysis showed that the interface between black layer and original stone is not black but its characteristic is similar to black layer The results indicated that during deterioration process the black layer can be expanded gradually into the interface by adsorption of atmospheric pollutants. The sulphur isotope analysis demonstrates that there are different origins of the sulphur component in black surface layer.
The hydraulic deterioration of the drainage system in tunnel linings is one of the main factors governing long-term lining-ground interactions during the lifetime of tunnels. Thus, in the design procedure of a tunnel below the groundwater table, the possible detrimental effects associated with the hydraulic deterioration should be addressed. Hydraulic deterioration in double-lined tunnels can occur because of reasons such as clogging of the drainage layer and drain-pipe blockings. In this study, the coupled mechanical and hydraulic interactions between linings due to drain-pipe blockings are investigated using the finite-element method. A double-lined structural model incorporating hydraulic behavior is developed to represent the coupled structural and hydraulic behavior between the linings and drainage system. It is found that hydraulic deterioration hinders flow into the tunnel, causing asymmetric development of pore-water pressure and consequent detrimental effects to the secondary lining.
This paper has comparatively analyzed the characteristics of the machined surface of a specimen made by machining Die Steel STD11 and a specimen obtained by W-EDM steel. If a press die is manufactured through W-EDM, products of shapes that cannot easily be made through machining can be manufactured easily. However, the life of the press die is significantly reduced compared with the press die made through machining. This is believed to be caused by the deformed layer that has occurred on the surface of the press die that was made through W-EDM. The roughness of the 2 specimens was measured, and it was learned that the distribution of the roughness of the specimen made through the 1st W-EDM was rough.
In this study, both evaluations by visual imaging for exterior view of coating and by EIS were executed for epoxy primer coated specimens deteriorated by accelerated test, and comparison and analysis were carried out for 2 evaluation methods. In the comparison between total damaged area ratio acquired by image processing method and deterioration point, higher deterioration points were appeared for rusted specimens than for non-rusted specimens. It is attributed that deterioration point per unit area ratio given for rust is higher than for peeling. In the comparison between total damaged area ratio and EIS result, impedance of coating was largely decreased as about TEX>$10^4{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ or less when rust area ratio is more than about 0.1%, and blistering area ratio is more than about 3%. Charge transfer resistance ($R_{ct}$) and double layer capacitance ($C_{dl}$) values were appeared for all specimens except 2 ones, which shows that water is accumulated and steel substrate is corroded at coated film-steel interface. In the comparison between deterioration point and EIS result, more than 10 points as deterioration point were given for specimens of below $10^6{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ of impedance at low frequency. For specimens deteriorated by NORSOK cyclic test, impedance was lowest of all, though deterioration point was not high. It is thought to be attributed that coating system and accelerated deterioration condition of cyclic tested specimens were different from those of main specimens. From the result, it is thought that coating resistance can be relatively more decreased than deterioration degree estimated from exterior view under more severe corrosion environment or in the present of more complex deterioration factors.
This study aimed at verifying the effect of hydroxypropyl cellulose(HPC) treatment on polyethylene glycol(PEG)-treated waterlogged wood for surface stabilizing. This research investigated macroscopic and microscopic appearance, color change, weight change, and dimensional change. And effect of HPC was verified through variance analysis (ANOVA) and least significant difference test(LSD). HPC formed thin layer on the surface of wood specimen, and blocked the pore of tracheid and the gap between the crack. Specimens without deterioration showed no invisible change except HPC 1,000,000 treatment group. Whitening was appeared at the sound surface of HPC 1,000,000 treated wood. Specimens with deterioration showed a little color difference change by external moisture adsorption. Thin layer of HPC on the surface of wood specimen was maintained after the deterioration, and this HPC layer significantly suppressed the weight and dimensional change by moisture adsorption.
Six trails of Naesorak(west Sorak) district of Soraksan National Park were selected to investigate the use impacts on environmental edterioration of trail according to the different amount of use. The entire width, and slope of trail as the trail condition surveyed at the total of 132 points were significantly varied with the amount of use. Major deterioration types of trail were rock-exposure, root-exposure, deepening and divergence in order of frequency. Deteriorated points were significantly different in trail conditions from non-deteriorated points, and these latter generally appeared at the lowed altituede than the former on each trail. Naesorak district still seemed to have poorer use-impacts than Oesarak(east sorak) district. The dominant species in upper layer of trail edge vegetation differed from trail to trail, but in shrub layer Lespedeza maximowiczii, lindera obutsiloba for valley trail and Rhododendron schlipenbavhii for slope trail. The species diversity and coverage of shrub layer in trail edge were the highest on the Ose'am trail and each trail was dissimilar in species composition of shrub layer of edge vegetation.
The quality of the surface layer in concrete structures plays an important role in the durability of the concrete. The concrete factory products are made as they improve the appearance of the surface and compressive strength in need. A common criterion to judge the quality of concrete products frequently seen in our daily life appears to be "beauty" in terms of consistent shaping. However, as for most concrete curb in such areas where a large amount of anti-freezing agents(NaCl) and ice and snow melting agents(CaCl2) are spread over roads to ensure road safety during the winter season, since deterioration advances from the surface, scaling is seen on the surface concrete due to deterioration which combined freezing damage and salt damage. Especially, In cold northern districts, the spreading amount of deicing salts increases by regulation of studded tire use, and the scaling of the concrete products, the various parts of concrete structures for roads is increasing in recent years. In this study, L-shape concrete curb were targeted, the permeable form method with the commercial permeable sheet was applied to it and the improvements of the quality were examined. By the permeable form method, surface layers got strengthened, which prevented permeation of the deterioration factor from the outside, and the scaling resistance of the upper surface where the permeable sheet was applied improved exceedingly. It will be expected by applying the permeable form method to various concrete products that frost resistance improves and scaling damage decreases.
Ceramics from Taean shipwreck were studied to investigate the deterioration by soluble salts and desalination pattern according to each ceramic characterization. NaCl crystals were found as a crystal growth on the ceramic microstructure and deteriorated to push off the glaze layer of some Puncheong ware sample. As a result of monitoring the desalination pattern of ceramics for 74days, the earthenware sample with big pores and no glaze removed soluble salts so fast, but Puncheong ware and Whiteware samples removed lots of soluble salts slowly and continuously. Generally, it takes long time to remove soluble salts from porcelains, due to small pores and glaze, but the long-term desalination probably can cause the damage on the surface layer such like glaze. As some soluble salts still remains in the ceramic microstructures after desalination, it is very important to control and keep the relative humidity stable through the proper storage. There are various ceramic deterioration patterns by soluble salts. Therefore, it needs to select the desalination method of ceramics from shipwreck, considering the material characteristics and the production techniques.

PURPOSES : Bonded concrete overlay is a favorable maintenance method since the material properties are similar to existing concrete pavements. In addition, bonded concrete overlay has advantage of structural performance since the overlay layer and the existing pavement perform as a monolithic layer. It is important to have suitable bond strength criteria to secure the performance of bonded concrete overlay. This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing bond strength characteristics between existing concrete pavement and overlay material. METHODS: Bond strength between overlay and existing pavement are measured and analyzed for various conditions such as the type of overlay materials, compressive and flexure strength of overlay and existing pavement, and deterioration status of existing pavement. RESULTS: The strength of overlay material does not significantly influence the bond strength. The overlay of ultra-rapid hardening cement generally gives low bond strength. However, ultra rapid hardening polymer modified concrete gives robust bond strength. The deterioration of existing concrete significantly decrease the bond strength. CONCLUSIONS: Bond strength of bonded concrete overlay highly depends on condition of existing concrete pavement rather than overlay material.
