Recently, forced ventilating air conditioning system has been widely used in modern buildings. However, It is obvious that this kind of system may affect on the response of fire detectors at real fire incidents, especially, on the ionization smoke detector, which is critically influenced by air stream. Therefore we studied to verify the response characteristics of air stream by ionization smoke detector for the design of facilities in practice. In this study, experiments were executed to examine the correlation between air velocity and the ionization detector's responses with var-ious air velocity and smoke densities in the simulated test room. As a result of experiments, ionization detector's operating time is in reverse proportion to air velocity. And the detector shows more sensitive reaction when the velocity of smoke stream increase over 60 cm/s. In addition, it was shown that ionization smoke detector is more sensitive to smoldering fires in paper than that in petro-chemicals.
It is necessary to detect the feature points existing simultaneously in both images and then find the corresponding relationship between the detected feature points. We propose a new feature detector based on geometric mean of two eigenvalues of gradient matrix which is able to measure the change of pixel intensities. The corner response of the proposed detector is proportional to the geometric mean and also the difference of two eigenvalues in the case of same geometric mean. We analyzed the localization error of the feature detection using aerial image and artificial image with various types of corners. The localization error of the proposed detector was smaller than that of the typical corner detector, Harris detector.
Wooden structures in Korea are usually damaged by some insects such as termites, wasps, cigarette beetles, powder-post beetles. Especially, the termites inhabiting in Korea are the subterranean termites, Reticulitermes speratus kyushuensis Morimoto, that make colonies in underground, therefore it is difficult to predict and control substantial infestations in advance. Accordingly, to enable inspectors to locate the termite infestations before the extensive damage occurs, the pest management industry has begun using several elaborate tools and making the various effect to inspect areas hard to access through a visual inspection. Recently detector dogs were adopted as one of those tools. Detector dogs are useful for locating subterranean termites because they use their acute olfaction rather than vision. We also have used detector dogs to locate termites and investigated 270 buildings from 31 sites since 2007. According to the results, while 144 buildings (53.4%) were in good condition with no damage by termites, 80 buildings (29.6%) were found out to be damaged by termites through visual inspection and detector dog. So it is expected to control termites according to the conservation status if detector dogs are well trained to discriminate live termites from fecal pellets by termites.

Multiple input multiple output architectures, known to provide high spectral efficiencies, can provide the best performance in terms of the block error rate when a maximum likelihood (ML) detector is employed. The complexity of the ML detector, however, increases exponentially with the numbers of transmit antennas and signals in the constellation. The zero forcing (ZF) detector has been suggested as a reduced-complexity detection method at the cost of performance degradation. In order to improve the performance of the ZF detector while reducing the complexity of the ML detector, we propose a novel multistage decision method. Numerical results show that, despite the proposed detector has a lower complexity than the ML detector, the performance difference between the ML and proposed detectors is negligibly small at high SNR.

Release of hazardous and flammable gas is a significant contributor to risk. The ignition of flammable gas clouds can lead to explosion accidents in the offshore installations. A gas detector, which is one of active protect systems, brings the module into a safe state through emergency shut down processes and reduces the damage by eliminating the dangerous releases. It is critical to understand the gas release, the wind field, and the complex geometry of installations to determine gas detector placement. In this paper, the Gas detector Location Index (GLI) which is a novel index for optimal detector location determination to efficiently prevent explosion accident using probabilistic approach.

In this paper, a new Silicon on Insulator (SOI)-based photodetector was proposed, and its basic operation principle was explained. Fabrication steps of the detector are compatible with those of conventional SOI CMOS technology. With the proposed structure, RGB (Read, Green, Blue) which are three primary colors of light can be realized without using any organic color filters. It was shown that the characteristics of the SOI-based detector are better than those of bulk-based detector. To see the response characteristics to the green (G) among RGB, SOI and bulk NMOSFETS were fabricated using $1.5\mu m$ CMOS technology and characterized. We obtained optimum optical response characteristics at $V_{GS}=0.35 V$ in NMOSFET with threshold voltage of 0.72 V. Drain bias should be less than about 1.5 V to avoid any problem from floating body effect, since the body of the SOI NMOSFET was floated. The SOI and the bulk NMOSFETS shown maximum drain currents at the wavelengths of incident light around 550 nm and 750 nm, respectively. Therefore the SOI detector is more suitable for the G color detector.
In this paper, we are suggested development of dual-mode detector for dual-energy digital radiography. Design of dual-energy radiography module for commercial BIS (Baggage Inspection System) is used in the spectrum of the X-ray generator and detector for dual-mode features and radiological characteristics were analyzed. BIS suggestl on the image detector module being used to target X-ray tube to simulate X-ray spectrum and simulated spectrum to offer through the new radiographic characteristics of the detector modules were investigated. Using X-ray experiments with an increase in the thickness of the copper filter low energy detector (LED) and high-energy detector (HED) as the difference between the output signal increases. HED, especially in the size of the output signal decreases with increasing thickness of the copper filter was found.

As a part of the next generation PET project, we have developed a depth of interaction detector which is consist of three-dimensional arrays of GSO crystal elements sized 2.9mm ${\times}$ 2.9mm ${\times}$ 7.5mm. The basic structure of a detector block is 4-stages in depth, one stage is composed of 2 by 2 array of the crystal elements. The blocks are optically coupled to a position sensitive photomultiplier tube. Each crystal element can be in different conditions; rough or chemical etching for the crystal surface. The effect of the difference of crystal surface condition on the detector performance was analyzed in one-dimensional crystal array as a basic study for the three-dimensional detector by a simple model which is considered only probabilities of transmission, reflect and absorption of photons are in a crystal. As the next step, we investigated the effect of different crystal surface condition in a "U shaped detector" which is an array of stacked crystals bending at the center.

In this paper, a low-complexity and low-power soft output multiple input multiple output (MIMO) symbol detector is proposed for mobile devices with two transmit and two receive antennas. The proposed symbol detector can support both the spatial multiplexing mode and spatial diversity mode in single hardware and shows the optimal maximum likelihood (ML) performance. By applying a multi-stage pipeline structure and using a complex multiplier based on the polar-coordinate, the complexity of the proposed architecture is dramatically decreased. Also, by applying a clock-gating scheme to the internal modules for MIMO modes, the power consumption is also reduced. The proposed symbol detector was designed using a hardware description language (HDL) and implemented using a 65nm CMOS standard cell library. With the proposed architecture, the proposed MIMO detector takes up an area of approximately $0.31mm^2$ with 183K equivalent gates and achieves a 150Mbps throughput. Also, the power estimation results show that the proposed MIMO detector can reduce the power consumption by a maximum of 85% for the various test cases.
This paper presents classification of domestic fire detector using response time index. Response time is measured using fire detector distributed in Korea, and the response time index is estimated. Plunge test prescribed by FM is conducted to measure response time of fire detector. The detector used to test is fixed temperature type(thermistor and bimetal type) and rate of rise temperature type(thermistor and pneumatic type). The nominal operation temperature of fixed temperature type detector is $70^{\circ}C$ and rate of rise temperature is $15^{\circ}C/min$. The fixed temperature type is measured 7 products, and the rate of rise temperature type is measured 5 products. The results show that in case of fixed temperature type(thermistor) is classified "Quick" or "Standard" and fixed temperature type(bimetal) is not classified. The rate of rise temperature type(thermistor) is classified "Fast" or "Ultra Fast" and the rate of rise temperature type(pneumatic) is classified "Very Fast" or "Ultra Fast". The pneumatic type shows more fast response than thermistor type. Also these results indicate the fixed temperature type(bimetal) is not suitable for early stage fire detection.
