Trends in the Isolation Rates and Species Distribution of Mycobacteria from 2014 to 2021 at Referral Clinical Laboratories in South Korea

  • We aimed to investigate the proportions of MTB- and NTM-positive tests and the distribution patterns of species isolated by contracted testing agencies in South Korea. Respiratory specimens submitted to contracted testing agencies in South Korea for AFB culture from January 2014 to December 2021 were included (533,713 specimens in total). Trends based on MTB and NTM detection, patient sex and age, culture medium type, and testing year were analyzed. MTB and NTM positive detection increased in the patients. The average ages of MTB- and NTM-positive patients increased in those aged ≥61 years. For solid culture, the MTB detection rate decreased from 5.9% in 2014 to 3.3% in 2018 and increased to 4.7% in 2021; the NTM detection rate increased from 2.1% in 2014 to 3.4% in 2018 and 3.7% in 2021. For liquid culture, the MTB detection rate decreased from 8.3% in 2014 to 5.5% in 2018 and increased to 6.0% in 2021; the NTM detection rate increased from 3.5% in 2014 to 5.5% in 2018 and decreased to 5.3% in 2021. An isolation ratio reversal between MTB and NTM was observed in 2018. In this study, we provide information on mycobacterial isolation rates and species distributions using AFB culture test results from Korea's referral laboratories. Increased MTB- and NTM-isolation rates were observed in individuals aged ≥60 years, indicating the need for regular testing and focused management for them. Expanding liquid culture applications, which show higher positivity rates than solid culture methods, is necessary.

A Real Time Scan Detection System against Attacks based on Port Scanning Techniques (포트 스캐닝 기법 기반의 공격을 탐지하기 위한 실시간 스캔 탐지 시스템 구현)

  • Port scanning detection systems should rather satisfy a certain level of the requirement for system performance like a low rate of “False Positive” and “False Negative”, and requirement for convenience for users to be easy to manage the system security with detection systems. However, public domain Real Time Scan Detection Systems have high rate of false detection and have difficulty in detecting various scanning techniques. In addition, as current real time scan detection systems are based on command interface, the systems are poor at user interface and thus it is difficult to apply them to the system security management. Hence, we propose TkRTSD(Tcl/Tk Real Time Scan Detection System) that is able to detect various scan attacks based on port scanning techniques by applying a set of new filter rules, and minimize the rate of False Positive by applying proposed ABP-Rules derived from attacker's behavioral patterns. Also a GUI environment for TkRTSD is implemented by using Tcl/Tk for user's convenience of managing network security.

Experimental Studies on Detection of Salmonellae in Animal-origin Foods by Means of Dirct Fluorescent Antibody Technique (직접형광항체법(直接螢光抗體法)에 의한 축산식품중(畜産食品中)의 Salmonella 균(菌) 검출(檢出)에 관한 실험적(實驗的) 연구(硏究))

  • The experiment was performed in order to investigate the applicability of the rapid detection of salmonellae in various animal-origin foods by means of the direct fluorescent antibody technique. Egg, sausage and chicken were inoculated with various concentrations of Sal.paratuphi A, Sal. paratyhi B and Sal. thompson, and the fluorescent antibody technique was applied and compared with the conventional cultura method for the sensitivity of detection of the organisms. Two methods were employed in the fluorescent antibody technique; the direct smear method in which the smear being made directly from the specimens, and the enrichment smear method in which the smear being made from the enrichment broth. The effect of various enrichment time (1,5,8,11 and 13 hours) in tetrathionate broth on the detection of salmonellae in the fluoresent antibody technique was also studied. The results obtained were summarized as followings; 1. Of the three methods, the enrichment smear method of fluorescedt antibody technique was highly effective as cultural method for the detection of salmonella organisms. 2. Direct smear method of fluorescent antibody technique was effective as two other methods $5{\times}10^4$ organisms presented in 50 g(ml) of specimens. This method may not be applicable when the specimens contained $5{\times}10^2$ or less organisms. 3. Of the three specimens, the recovery rate of Salmonella organisms from egg was slightly higher than that of sausage and chicken. 4. In fluorescent antibody technique and cultural method, the specimens inoculated with Sal. thompson were found to be higher detection rate than the specimens inoculated with Sal. paratyphi A, 5. The optimum enrichment time of Salmonella organisms in tetrathionate broth on the detection by fluorscent antibody technique was found to be 11 hours or longer when the specimens of egg, sausage and chicken were inoculated with approximately 500 organisms. The longer enrichment time was the higher detection rate up to 11 hours tested.

Egg Detection Rates of Enterobius uermiculuyis in Children (도시 및 농촌 아동의 요충란 양성율)

  • The cello·tape anal swab specimens from 936 primary school children in Seoul, 308 primary school children in a rural area and 92 children in Nanjido, were examined for Enterobius vermicularis eggs. Out of 936 specimens from a primary school in Seoul, E. vermicularis eggs were detected in 114 specimens, the egg detection rate being 12.2%. In 308 specimens from a primary school in a rural area,77 (25.0%) were positive for 5. vermicularis eggs. Among 92 specimens from Nanjido children in Seoul, egg Positive rate of E. vermicularis was 28.3%. The egg detection rate of primary school children in Seoul was significantly lower than that of primary school children in a rural area and of Nanjido children. The egg detection rate in boys was lower than that of girls. As the age of children increased, the egg detection rate decreased.

Development of Unmanned Remote Radiation Detection Module (무인 원격 방사선 검출 모듈 개발)

  • The designed drone-based unmanned remote radiation detection module was developed according to the needs of the nuclear power plant decommissioning workshop. Using the Geiger-Mueller tube sensitive to low-level radiation measurement, It was manufactured to measure the amount of radiation leaking into and out of the containment vessel. The drone-based radiation detection module weighs less than 200g, It can be operated inside and outside the containment vessel of a nuclear power plant. To check the performance of the designed equipment, a performance evaluation test was conducted with reference to the international standard (IEC-60864). The stability of the radiation detection module designed to meet the needs of the field the statistical rate of change by repeated measurements in the rate of change experiment to evaluate the measurement accuracy was ±4.6%. The accuracy ±7.3% in the linearity experiment to evaluate the dose rate dependence, the linear The figure satisfies the international performance evaluation standard of ±3.5%. The radiation detection module developed in this study is a customized equipment for a nuclear power plant dismantling workshop. It will be helpful for accurate measurement of space dose rate and safety management of radiation worksites in sites with a lot of radiation dust.

  • This paper investigates congestion detection and control strategies for multi-path traffic (CDCM) diss emination in lifetime-constrained wireless sensor networks. CDCM jointly exploits packet arrival rate, succ essful packet delivery rate and current buffer status of a node to measure the congestion level. Our objec tive is to develop adaptive traffic rate update policies that can increase the reliability and the network lif etime. Our simulation results show that the proposed CDCM scheme provides with good performance.

An Empirical Comparison Study on Attack Detection Mechanisms Using Data Mining (데이터 마이닝을 이용한 공격 탐지 메커니즘의 실험적 비교 연구)

  • In this paper, we introduce the creation methods of attack detection model using data mining technologies that can classify the latest attack types, and can detect the modification of existing attacks as well as the novel attacks. Also, we evaluate comparatively these attack detection models in the view of detection accuracy and detection time. As the important factors for creating detection models, there are data, attribute, and detection algorithm. Thus, we used NetFlow data gathered at the real network, and KDD Cup 1999 data for the experiment in large quantities. And for attribute selection, we used a heuristic method and a theoretical method using decision tree algorithm. We evaluate comparatively detection models using a single supervised/unsupervised data mining approach and a combined supervised data mining approach. As a result, although a combined supervised data mining approach required more modeling time, it had better detection rate. All models using data mining techniques could detect the attacks within 1 second, thus these approaches could prove the real-time detection. Also, our experimental results for anomaly detection showed that our approaches provided the detection possibility for novel attack, and especially SOM model provided the additional information about existing attack that is similar to novel attack.

An Enhanced Step Detection Algorithm with Threshold Function under Low Sampling Rate (낮은 샘플링 주파수에서 임계 함수를 사용한 개선된 걸음 검출 알고리즘)

  • At the case of peak threshold algorithm, 3-axes data should sample step data over 20 Hz to get sufficient accuracy. But most of the digital sensors like 3-axes accelerometer have very low sampling rate caused by low data communication speed on limited SPI or $I^2C$ bandwidth of the low-cost MPU for ubiquitous devices. If the data transfer rate of the 3-axes accelerometer is getting slow, the sampling rate also slows down and it finally degrades the data accuracy. In this study, we proved there is a distinct functional relation between the sampling rate and threshold on the peak threshold step detection algorithm under the 20Hz frequency, and made a threshold function through the experiments. As a result of experiments, when we apply threshold value from the threshold function instead of fixed threshold value, the step detection error rate can be lessen about 1.2% or under. Therefore, we can suggest a peak threshold based new step detection algorithm with threshold function and it can enhance the accuracy of step detection and step count. This algorithm not only can be applied on a digital step counter design, but also can be adopted any other low-cost ubiquitous sensor devices subjected on low sampling rate.

  • we analyzed simulation of the effectiveness for one or two DIRCM on a helicopter. The survival rate of helicopter followed increase of the deception rate of DIRCM. When the deception rate was over 70% at 100% detection rate, the survival rate was 10~30% when one DIRCM was installed and the survival rate was 70~80% when two DIRCMs were installed. When the detection rate was over 70% at 100% deception rate the survival rate was 10~30% case of one DIRCM was installed. survival rate was 20~30% when two were installed. Survival rate of 70~90% was observed with one DIRCM when the deception rate and detection rate were 100%, and 100% with two DIRCMs.

Dwell Time Optimization of Alert-Confirm Detection for Active Phased Array Radars

  • Alert-confirm detection is a highly efficient method to improve phased array radar search performance. It comprises sequential detection in two steps: alert detection, in which a target is detected at a low detection threshold, and confirm detection, which is triggered by alert detection with a longer dwell time to minimize false alarms. This paper provides a design method for applying the alert-confirm detection to multifunctional radars. We find optimum dwell times and false alarm probabilities for each alert detection and confirm detection under the dual constraints of total false alarm probability and maximum allowable dwell time per position. These optimum values are expressed as a function of the mean new target appearance rate. The proposed alert-confirm detection increases the maximum detection range even with a shorter frame time than that of uniform scanning.
