A pilot application study of densitometric image analysis as a potential comparative evaluation method for visualized fingerprints

  • The current comparison methods with scoring systems that are used to compare visualized latent fingerprints (LF) have disadvantages. Evaluators using these methods are prone to make errors and fail to discriminate LFs correctly to notice the differences among those LFs. Therefore, a comparative and quantitative evaluation method that is capable of obtaining more objective and quantitative results is needed. Densitometric image analysis (DIA) is used in other fields as a reliable semi-quantitative comparison method. To apply DIA to LFs, the potential variables that can occur during the DIA process were tested. The visualized ridges of LFs can be compared using the concentration of dots against the background to make it possible to analyze the ridges with DIA. The variables that can be present during the DIA process include the thickness of the analysis line, the number of ridges to be taken, the number of divided zones within each of the fingerprints, and the angles of the analysis line against the ridge lines that were selected. From the analysis of the inked fingerprints and circular lines that are similar to fingerprints, the angle of the analysis lines with the ridge line was the most significant variable. The preliminary test result was applied to the comparison of LFs that were developed with the powder method and then compared with the AFIS analysis. A similar trend was found, and a more detailed and semi-quantitative comparison of the visualized LFs was possible. In the future, it is necessary to check the evaluative ability of the DIA method by analyzing the visualized LFs with other various development methods. However, DIA is currently an option that can be used as an objective comparative evaluation method during fingerprint studies with supplementary role.

  • The accident statistics use the data from police accident reports and statistics. Although the official accident statistics are useful, they provide very limited information about how accidents occur, the cause of the accident and the injury mechanisms. This limitations could be overcome by carrying out the in-depth accident study and analysing investigations, collecting more detailed information. Meanwhile a net of in-depth investigation teams are operating worldwide, such as NASS (National Accident Sampling System) and CIREN (Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network) in US, OTS (On the spot investigation) in UK. In this study, the database structure and variables of Korea in-depth accidents investigation system would be proposed through considering the database structure of GIDAS (Germany In-Depth Accidents Study). GIDAS is one of the best system on the in-depth accident study system in the world. GIDAS was established in 1999 as a cooperation project between Federal Highway Research Institute of Germany (BASt) and research association on automotive engineering of German Car Industry(FAT). The iGLAD (Initiative for the Global Harmonization of Accident Data) was also considered to introduce into the database variables of Korea in-depth accident study. Current police reports were compared with GIDAS and iGLAD. To collaborate of the Worldwide in-depth accident data, this paper proposed that the database of Korea in-depth accident study would be introduced the structure of GIDAS and the core variables of iGLAD. Harmonization of the structures and core variables of Korea in-depth accident study will be better than the making unique ones. The database structure and core variables of KIDAS(Korea In-Depth Accident Study) introduced of GIDAS and iGLAD.

Analysis of Steganography and Countermeasures for Criminal Laws in National Security Offenses (안보사건에서 스테가노그라피 분석 및 형사법적 대응방안)

  • Steganography is being used as a means of secret communication for crimes that threaten national security such as terrorism and espionage. With the development of computers, steganography technologies develop and criminals produce and use their own programs. However, the research for steganography is not active because detailed information on national security cases is not disclosed. The development of investigation technologies and the responses of criminal law are insufficient. Therefore, in this paper, the detection and decoding process was examined for steganography investigation, and the method was analyzed for 'the spy case of Pastor Kim', who was convicted by the Supreme Court. Multiple security devices were prepared using symmetric steganography using the pre-promised stego key. Furthermore, the three criminal legal issues: (1) the relevance issue, (2) the right to participate, and (3) the public trial issue a countermeasure were considered in national security cases. Through this paper, we hope that the investigative agency will develop analysis techniques for steganography.

On the elastic stability and free vibration responses of functionally graded porous beams resting on Winkler-Pasternak foundations via finite element computation

  • In current investigation, a novel beam finite element model is formulated to analyze the buckling and free vibration responses of functionally graded porous beams resting on Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundations. The novelty lies in the formulation of a simplified finite element model with only three degrees of freedom per node, integrating both C0 and C1 continuity requirements according to Lagrange and Hermite interpolations, respectively, in isoparametric coordinate while emphasizing the impact of z-coordinate-dependent porosity on vibration and buckling responses. The proposed model has been validated and demonstrating high accuracy when compared to previously published solutions. A detailed parametric examination is performed, highlighting the influence of porosity distribution, foundation parameters, slenderness ratio, and boundary conditions. Unlike existing numerical techniques, the proposed element achieves a high rate of convergence with reduced computational complexity. Additionally, the model's adaptability to various mechanical problems and structural geometries is showcased through the numerical evaluation of elastic foundations, with results in strong agreement with the theoretical formulation. In light of the findings, porosity significantly affects the mechanical integrity of FGP beams on elastic foundations, with the advanced beam element offering a stable, efficient model for future research and this in-depth investigation enriches porous structure simulations in a field with limited current research, necessitating additional exploration and investigation.

Review of Site Characterization Methodology for Deep Geological Disposal of Radioactive Waste (방사성폐기물의 심층 처분을 위한 부지특성조사 방법론 해외 사례 연구)

  • In the process of site selection for a radioactive waste disposal, site characterization must be carried out to obtain input parameters to assess the safety and feasibility of deep geological repository. In this paper, methodologies of site characterization for radioactive waste disposal in Korea were suggested based on foreign cases of site characterization. The IAEA recommends that site characterization for radioactive waste disposal should be performed through stepwise processes, in which the site characterization period is divided into preliminary and detailed stages, in sequence. This methodology was followed by several foreign countries for their geological disposal programs. General properties related to geological environments were obtained at the preliminary site characterization stage; more detailed site characteristics were investigated during the detailed site characterization stage. The results of investigation of geology, hydro-geology, geochemistry, rock mechanics, solute transport and thermal properties at a site have to be combined and constructed in the form of a site descriptive model. Based on this site descriptive model, the site characteristics can be evaluated to assess suitability of site for radioactive waste disposal. According to foreign site characterization cases, 7 or 8 years are expected to be needed for site characterization; however, the time required may increase if the no proper national strategy is provided.

A Statistical Analysis of Results of Detailed Inspections on Aged Concrete Erosion Control Dams in Gyeongsangbuk-do (경상북도 지역 노후 콘크리트사방댐 정밀점검 결과의 통계적 분석)

  • We carried out this study to provide basic data necessary to establish a management plan for concrete erosion control dams in the future by analyzing results of detailed inspections of aged dams conducted in accordance with 「Guidelines for the Maintenance of the Erosion Control Facility」. We analyzed the results of a detailed inspection of 54 concrete erosion control dams which had been built over 20 years previously, located in private forests of Gyeongsangbuk-do using statistical methods. Having conducted exterior defect investigations, we found 18 dams (33.4%) in need of repair or follow-up measures and 15 dams in which the overall grade was changed due to investigator's corrections; we therefore considered that standardization of related standards and indicators would be necessary. After conducting concrete compression strength tests, we found 19 dams (35.2%) to be below the standard value of 21 MPa, and in particular, we included, in grade A, eight dams which we judged to be in good condition as a result of the exterior defect inspection. There was little clear correlation between the total score and the compressive strength of concrete, but there was a statistically significant difference in the compressive strength by overall grade. After analyzing the changes in the characteristics of the erosion control dams according to the elapsed years after construction, we detected no particular trend in the changes of total score and compressive strength over time. However, the cumulative ratio of the dams that required repair and follow-up measures and the dams below the compression strength standard had a strong positive linear relationship over time, suggesting that it would be possible to identify the aging characteristics of concrete erosion control dams.

POSSIBILITIES TO IMPROVE TRANSIENT GEAR SHIFT NOISE (SHIFT CLONK) IN A PASSENGER CAR

  • The presented investigation of shift clonk in a vehicle with front-wheel drive shows how a detailed analysis of the complete acoustic system with respect to excitation, transfer and radiation foremost enables possibilities of noise reduction to be worked out. One of the most important basics for the shift clonk analysis was a synchronous measurement of both, torsional vibrations in the drive train on the excitation side as well as airborne and structure-borne noise signals on the transfer and radiation side. Thus, root causes could be identified and improvement measures of the internal shift system could be worked out. An analysis of the transfer paths by means of airborne and structure borne noise measurements made evident that the side shafts were responsible for the disturbing frequencies in the transfer paths. With the help of the FE-simulation it was possible to develop measures of structure optimisation for the side shaft system. The realisation of these measures clearly reduced the shift-noises in the vehicle interior.

Investigation of the gas Dynamics in an Upflow OMVPE Reactor by Raman Spectroscopy

  • The gas dynamics in a stagnation point upflow OMVPE reactor were studied by Raman spectroscopy. The gas temperature was measured as a function of inlet gas velocity and aspect ratio for both H$_2$ and N$_2$ carrier gases. The centerline temperature gradient was latger at higher inlet velocities and with the use of N$_2$, and only weakly dependent on the aspect ratio. a tracer molecule, CH$_4$, was used to investigate the steady state behavior of reactants in the reactor, and the use of a sweeping flow was found to be a suitable method for preventing wall deposition. The transient switching response of the gas manifold was also investigated. Under certain conditions (low velocities, unmatched flows) recirculation flows were apparent. Numerical calculations of the reactor gas dynamics gave reasonable agreement with experimental results when detailed thermal boundary conditions were included.

  • The Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition(HCCI) combustion is currently under intensive investigation because of its potential to increase thermal efficiency while greatly decreasing NOx and p.M. In order to account for the thermal boundary layer effects, the two-zone model has been developed to analyze the combustion characteristics of HCCI engine. The detailed chemistry are represented by the GRI mechanism 3.0 involving 53 species and 325reactions. The present combustion model has been validated against the experimental results. Computations are also made for the wide-range operating conditions of HCCI engine.

ECONOMICS OF SINGLE ANIMAL PLOUGHING IN BANGLADESH : PRESENTATION OF SURVEY RESULTS

  • In this study attempts were made to identify the areas of single animal ploughing (SAP) in Bangladesh, causes of its localization and the socio-economic constraints hindering the expansion of the system. To determine the areas of single animal ploughing, 123 upazilas of 15 districts were surveyed. Of them, 16 upazilas were found heavily engaged with this system. A detailed investigation of 469 SAP and 439 double animal ploughing (DAP) farmers revealed that there was significant difference between the two systems in respect of cost of production and yield per unit of land. The benefit/cost (B/C) ratio was higher in SAP system. However, no significant difference was observed in respect of time required for ploughing, intensity of cropping, cost of implements, and cost of repairing implements (except yoke). The study recommends for expansion of SAP system in areas where buffaloes are concentrated. Fro this purpose, logistic and institutional supports need to be made available.
