The strength of the connecting joint of boxthorn(Lycium chinense Mill) fruits to tree twigs was determined experimentally at several pulling angles(0$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$,45$^{\circ}$and 60$^{\circ}$) and at different harvesting seasons from August to November 1999 using an universal testing machine. The detachment force of mature fruits of boxthorn decreased as the pulling angle increased and varied with the harvesting season. The detachment force however did not gradually decreased as the harvesting season advanced due to difference of maturity of fruits from one harvesting season to another. Among three varieties of boxthron Cheongyang gugija Cheongyang native and Cheongyang #2, the maximum detachment force was 1.24 N at the pulling angle of zero degree. The highest detachment forve(1.29 N) of mature fruits of boxthorn appeared at the harvesting season of August, 1999.
Physical characteristics of stem (ile., length and diameter) and branch, and detachment force of mature and immature fruits of 12 species of the Lycium chinese Mill at a cultivar were determined. The number of stems and branches were counted after the first and second pruning of each plant. Length and diameter of the stem were average of 113.5 cm and 9.5 mm for 12 species of the Lycium chinese Mill, respectively. Average number of stem and number of branch after the first and second pruning in each plant were 5, 30, and 61, respectively. Diameter of major and minor axis of the fruit was average of 13.8mm and 8.3mm, respectively, and the sphericity of fruits was average of 0.7 for 12 species of Lycium chinese Mill. Detachment force of mature and immature fruits was average of 1 N and 2.7 N, respectively, for 12 species of the Lycium chinese Mill. The maximum and minimum detachment force of the mature fruits was 2.06 N and 0.39 N, respectively, and that of the immature fruits was 3.72 N and 1.27 N, respectively. The force-weight ratio showed a decreasing trend as the weight of fruit increasing for all samples.

An understanding of particle-particle interactions in filtration requires studying the detachment as well as the attachment of nanoparticles. Nanoparticles captured in a granular media filter can be released by changing the physicochemical factors. In this study, the detachment of captured silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in granular media filtration was examined under different ionic strengths, ion type, and the presence or absence of natural organic matter (NOM). Filtration velocity and ionic strength were chosen as the physical and chemical factors to cause the detachment. Increasing filtration velocity caused a negligible amount of AgNP detachment. On the other hand, lowering ionic strength showed different release amounts depending on the background ions, implying a population of loosely captured particles inside the filter bed. Overall detachment was affected by ionic strength and ion type, and to a lesser degree by NOM coating which resulted in slightly more detachment (in otherwise identical conditions) than in the absence of that coating, possibly by steric effects. The secondary energy minimum with Na ions was deeper and wider than with Ca ions, probably due to the lack of complexation with citrate and charge neutralization that would be caused by Ca ions. This result implies that the change in chemical force by reducing ionic strength of Na ions could significantly enhance the detachment compared to that caused by a change in physical force, due to a weak electrostatic deposition between nanoparticles and filter media. A modification of the 1-D filtration model to incorporate a detachment term showed good agreement with experimental data; estimating the detachment coefficients for that model suggested that the detachment rate could be similar regardless of the amount of previously captured AgNPs.
Objective: We evaluated the detachment force, amount of deformation, fracture mode, and pull-out force of 3 different wires used for bonded lingual retainer fabrication. Methods: We tested 0.0215-inch five-stranded wire (PentaOne, Masel; group I), $0.016{\times}0.022$-inch dead-soft eight-braided wire (Bond-A-Braid, Reliance; group II), and 0.0195-inch dead-soft coaxial wire (Respond, Ormco; group III). To test detachment force, deformation, and fracture mode, we embedded 94 lower incisor teeth in acrylic blocks in pairs. Retainer wires were bonded to the teeth and vertically directed force was applied to the wire. To test pull-out force, wires were embedded in composite that was placed in a hole at the center of an acrylic block. Tensile force was applied along the long axis of the wire. Results: Detachment force and mode of fracture were not different between groups. Deformation was significantly higher in groups II and III than in group I (p < 0.001). Mean pull-out force was significantly higher for group I compared to groups II and III (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Detachment force and fracture mode were similar for all wires, but greater deformations were seen in dead-soft wires. Wire pull-out force was significantly higher for five-stranded coaxial wire than for the other wires tested. Five-stranded coaxial wires are suggested for use in bonded lingual retainers.
Worldwide consumption of vegetable soybean bas been increasing recently, hence it is necessary to produce good quality of soybean in our farms. In the process of vegetable soybean production threshing and seperation work accounts for about 80% of overall labor. Therefore, developing of the vegetable soybean thresher is necessary to reduce the cost of labor. The purpose of this study is to acquire the basic informations to design of the vegetable soybeans-thresher. We make the experimental system which measure the physical properties and investigate the detachment forces. Also, We calculated the minimum speed of threshing cylinder. The result are as follows; 1. The average length of soybean stem is 68.2cm. 2. The length of soybean pods are seen as 61.3mm for 3 grain, 52.6mm fer 2 grains and 41.0mm fer 1 grain 3. The widths of soybean pods are seen as 14.1mm fer 3 grain, 13.8mm fer 2 grains and 13.4mm fer 1 grain. 4. The weights of soybean pods are seen as 4.1grams for 3 grains, 2.7grams for 2 grains and 1.4grams for 1 grain. 5. The average detachment forces of pods are seen as 1.5kgf for 3 grains, 1.2kgf for 2 grains and 0.8kgf for 1 grain respectively For 1 grain, the detachment force of pods ranges from 0.2kgf to 1.4kgf. For 2 grains, the minimum detachment force of pods is seen as 0.6kgf and the maximum one is seen as 2.5kgf. For 3 grains, the minimum detachment force of pods is seen as 0.7kgf and the maximum one is seen as 2.7kgf. 6. The minimum speed of threshing cylinder is shown 6.83m/s.
In order to prepare for the suitable surfaces of implants or medical devices, quantitative evaluation of adhesion between cells and biomaterials is essential. To better understand adhesion formation between cells and biomaterials, we used the cytodetachment technique which measures the adhesive force of a single cell through changing the, culture time and detachment speed. The results showed that the adhesive force could be affected by the culture time of cells on the surface of materials and the detachment speed. Moreover, there was a large discrepancy among the adhesion strength measured by similar techniques conducted on the different cells and substrates. It can be 'concluded that the variation of the force measurement technique can seriously alter the level of the force required to detach a cell on the surface of materials.

Adhesion phenomenon is more significant for smaller objects, because adhesional force is proportional to size of the objects while gravitational force is proportional to the third power of it. For the purpose of microassembly, theoretical understanding is required for the Adhesion phenomenon. Authors have developed a force measurement system in an ultra-high vacuum chamber of Auger electron spectroscopy. The force between arbitrary combination of materials can be measured at a pressure less than 100 nPa after and before Ar ion sputtering and chemical analysis for several atomic layers of the surface. The results are successfully interpreted with a theory of contact mechanics. Since surface energy is quite important in the interpretation, electronic theory is used to evaluate the surface energy. In the manipulation of small objects, the adhesional force is always attractive. Repulsive force is essential for the manipulation. It can be generated by Coulomb interaction. The voltage required for detachment is theoretically analyzed and the effect of boundary conditions on the detachment is obtained. The possibility and limitations of micro-manipulation using both the adhesion phenomenon and Coulomb interaction are theoretically clarified. Its applicability to nano-technology is found to be expected.
The mechanical and rheological properties of agricultural materials are important for engineering design and analysis of their mechanical harvesting, handling, transporting and processing systems. Agricultural materials, which composed of structural members and fluids do not react in a purely elastic manner, and their response when subjected to stress and strain is a combination of elastic and viscous behavior so called viscoelastic behavior. Many researchers have conducted studies on the mechanical and rheological properties of the various agricultural products, but a few researcher has studied those properties of rice plant, and also those data are available only for foreign varieties of rice plant. This study are conducted to experimentally determine the mechanical and the rheological properties such as axial compressive strength, tensile strength, bending and shear strength, stress relaxation and creep behavior of rice stems, and grain detachment strength. The rheological models for the rice stem were developed from the test data. The shearing characteristics were examined at some different levels of portion, cross-sectional area, moisture content of rice stem and shearing angle. The results obtained from this study were summarized as follows 1. The mechanical properties of the stems of the J aponica types were greater than those of the Indica ${\times}$ Japonica hybrid in compression, tension, bendingand shearing. 2. The mean value of the compressive force was 80.5 N in the Japonica types and 55.5 N in the Indica ${\times}$ Japonica hybrid which was about 70 percent to that of the Japonica types, and then the value increased progressively at the lower portion of the stems generally. 3. The average tensile force was about 226.6 N in the Japonica types and 123.6 N in the Indica ${\times}$ Japonica hybrid which was about 55 percent to that of the Japonica types. 4. The bending moment was $0.19N{\cdot}m$ in the Japonica types and $0.13N{\cdot}m$ in the Indica ${\times}$ Japonica hybrid which was 68 percent to that of the Japonica types and the bending strength was 7.7 MPa in the Japonica types and 6.5 MPa in the Indica ${\times}$ Japonica hybrid respectively. 5. The shearing force was 141.1 N in Jinju, the Japonica type and 101.4 N in Taebaeg, the Indica ${\times}$ Japonica hybrid which was 72 percent to that of Jinju, and the shearing strength of Taebaeg was 63 percent to that of Jinju. 6. The shearing force and the shearing energy along the stem portion in Jinju increased progressively together at the lower portions, meanwhile in Taebaeg the shearing force showed the maximum value at the intermediate portion and the shearing energy was the greatest at the portion of 21 cm from the ground level, and also the shearing strength and the shearing energy per unit cross-sectional area of the stem were the greater values at the intermediate portion than at any other portions. 7. The shearing force and the shearing energy increased with increase of the cross-sectional area of the rice stem and with decrease of the shearing angie from $90^{\circ}$ to $50^{\circ}$. 8. The shearing forces showed the minimum values of 110 N at Jinju and of 60 N at Taebaeg, the shearing energy at the moisture content decreased about 15 percent point from initial moisture content showed value of 50 mJ in Jinju and of 30 mJ in Taebaeg, respectively. 9. The stress relaxation behavior could be described by the generalized Maxwell model and also the compression creep behavior by Burger's model, respectively in the rice stem. 10. With increase of loading rate, the stress relaxation intensity increased, meanwhile the relaxation time and residual stress decreased. 11. In the compression creep test, the logarithmic creep occured at the stress less than 2.0 MPa and the steady-state creep at the stress larger than 2.0 MPa. 12. The stress level had not a significant effect on the relaxation time, while the relaxation intensity and residual stress increased with increase of the stress level. 13. In the compression creep test of the rice stem, the instantaneous elastic modulus of Burger's model showed the range of 60 to 80 MPa and the viscosities of the free dashpot were very large numerical value which was well explained that the rice stem was viscoelastic material. 14. The tensile detachment forces were about 1.7 to 2.3 N in the Japonica types while about 1.0 to 1.3 N in Indica ${\times}$ Japonica hybrid corresponding to 58 percent of Japonica types, and the bending detachment forces were about 0.6 to 1.1 N corresponding to 30 to 50 percent of the tensile detachment forces, and the bending detachment of the Indica ${\times}$ Japonica hybrid was 0.1 to 0.3 N which was 7 to 21 percent of Japonica types. 15. The detachment force of the lower portion was little bigger than that of the upper portion in a penicle and was not significantly affected by the harvesting period from September 28 to October 20. 16. The tensile and bending detachment forces decreased with decrease of the moisture content from 23 to 13 percent (w.b.) by the natural drying, and the decreasing rate of detachment forces along the moisture content was the greater in the bending detachment force than the tensile detachment force.
Objective: The aims of this study were to evaluate the relationship between the detachment force and bonding resin surface are and to determine the resin bonding surface area that would provide adequate bonding strength with minimum resin volume. Methods: One hundred and sixty human premolars were randomly divided into 4 groups of 40 teeth each. The diameter of the resin surface area in each group was as follows: group 1, 1.5 mm; group 2, 2.5 mm; group 3, 3.5 mm; and group 4, 4.5 mm. Respond Dead Soft straight (length 0.0175 inch) was used to fabricate the retainers, and $Transbond^{TM}$ XT was used to fix the retainers to the tooth surfaces. A pair of teeth was embedded in acrylic blocks for each specimen. Thus, each group comprised 20 samples. Fixed retainers were bonded to the teeth, and vertical force was applied at the middle of wire. The force was measured using a universal testing machine. Results: The mean value of detachment force was the highest for group 4 ($102.38{\pm}2.92N$), followed by group 3 ($63.54{\pm}2.21N$), group 2 ($51.95{\pm}1.61N$), and group 1 ($24.14{\pm}1.38N$). Conclusions: The detachment force of lingual fixed retainers was significantly affected as the area of the resin bonding surface increased. Considering the minimum bonding strength of brackets, a resin bonding surface area with a diameter of 3.5 mm would provide adequate bonding strength.
