  • The biosorption of Pb and Cr by Sargassum thunbergii was investigated in a batch conditions. The Pb and Cr uptake capacity of Sargassum thunbergii was 232.5 mg Pb/g biomass and 91.6 mg Cr/g biomass, respectively. An adsorption equilibria was reached within about 0.5 hr for both the Pb and the Cr. The adsorption parameters for both the Pb and the Cr were determined according to the Langmuir and Freundlich model. With increasing pH values, more negative sites are becoming available for the adsorption of Pb and Cr. The selectivity of mixture solution showed an uptake order of Pb>Cu>Cr>Cd. Pb and Cr adsorbed by S. thunbergii could be recovered ken 0.1 M HCl, 0.1 M $HNO_3$ and 0.1M EDTA by a desorption process, and the efficiency of Pb desorption was above $95.8\%$, whereas the efficiency of the Cr desorption was below $50.7\%$.

  • An electric swing adsorption (ESA) process for recovering highly pure $CO_2$ from the mixed gases was tested. In this study, activated carbon fibers were used as an adsorbent. The activated carbon fibers showed fast adsorption rate and the high adsorption capacity for $CO_2$ adsorption under the condition of the ambient pressure. Activated carbon fiber with higher specific surface area was suitable to repeated adsorption-desorption cycle process, showing consistent breakthrough curve. Especially, the regeneration method by vacuum combined with ESA improved the performance of desorption process by an additional 17% regeneration efficiency compared to a vacuum only method, and showed the high regeneration efficiency at comparatively low 7-8 Wh energy.

  • This study deals with the removal of mercury species using a packed-bed column with spherical aminated chitosan material. These adsorbents revealed a high adsorption capacity for mercury species. Experiments with feed solutions of 10 ppm Hg dissolved in distilled water showed an excellent removal with a sharp increase of the filter effluent concentration after a total throughput of 900 bed volumes of feed water. Up to $95\%$ desorption was reached by using 3 bed volumes of 0.01 N EDTA solution. EDTA could be recovered by means of sulfuric acid with about $75\%$ efficiency. Almost the same results were obtained in repeated sorption and desorption experiments at identical conditions. The experiments demonstrated that the sorbents possessed practically no sorption capacity for alkaline earth ions ($Ca^{2+}\;and\;Mg^{2+}$). Their influence on the sorption of mercury was negligible. In experiments with spiked tap water of the Karlsruhe Research Centre and a feed mercury concentration of 0.01 mg/l, the breakthrough of Hg was observed only after a total throughput of about 6,000 bed volumes of feed water.

  • This study is to develop of an adsorbent for the removing of human body harmful benzene, toluene, and p-xylene as VOCs. Thus, this study researched the adsorption efficiency of the commercial ACF and the reactivated ACF by KOH/ACF to molar 1: 1. As the results, the effects have shown to enlarge with the increasing of VOCs concentration for adsorptive breakthrough time and breakthrough percentage on each substance. Also, the study have investigated as a similar tendency in case of desorption efficiency for toluene and p-xylene at constant concentration as 125PPM and 0.5$\ell$/min volume flow rate. But in case of benzene, it has been investigated to have rather lower desorption efficiency re-activation ACF than commercial ACF.

  • Lead(II) removal efficiency by natural kaolinite was investigated through laboratory experiments. This study was conducted in two phases-sorption and desorption. In the adsorption study, the influence of sorption kinetics and sorption isotherm and various parameters such as pH, temperature, coexisting other heavy metal ions on the lead adsorption was investigated. And desorption study was carried out in order to find the re-usability of kaolinite as an adsorbent. The results of the study are as follows. 1. Sorption kinetics was investigated under the condition of 2.5 mg/l adsorbent concentration, pH 6.5$\pm$0.05, temperature $30\pm 0.5\circ$C, initial lead(II) concentration 25 mg/l. Adsorption rate was initially rapid and the extent of adsorption arrived at adsorption equilibrium with 73% adsorption efficiency in an hour. 2. The sorption isotherm experiment was made with different initial lead(II) concentration. A linearized Freundlich equation was used to fit the acquired experimental data. As a result, Freundlich constants, the sorption intensity (1/n) was 0.47 and the measure of sorption (k) was 2.44. So, it was concluded that sorption of lead(II) by kaolinite is effective. 3. The effect of pH on lead(II) sorption by kaolinite shows that at a pH of 3, only 6% of the total lead(II) was adsorbed and at a pH 9, 97% of the lead(II) was removed. And the effect of temperature on lead(II) sorption by kaolinite shows that as the temperature increased, the amount of lead(II) sorption per unit weight of kaolinite increased. But the effect was minor (p<0.05). 4. Sorption isotherm of lead coexisting cadmium (II) or zinc (II) was lower than that of lead itself. It was caused by the result of competitive sorption to adsorption site. And there was no difference between the sorption isotherm of cadmium and zinc. 5. In desorption studies, only 5.12% desorption took place in distilled water, while 52.08% in 0.1 N hydrochloric acid. Consequently used kaolinite could be regenerated by hydrochoric acid.

  • The adsorption capability of iron phthalocyanine derivatives were investigated by means of X-ray diffractometor (XRD), IR (infrared) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). According to TPD results, iron phthalocyanine derivatives showed two desorption peaks at low temperature ($100{\sim}150^{\circ}C$) and high temperature ($350{\sim}400^{\circ}C$) indicating that there were two kinds of acidities. Tetracarboxylic iron phthalocyanine (Fe-TCPC) have a stronger desorption peak (chemical adsorption) at the high temperature and a weaker desorption peak (physical adsorption) at the low temperature than iron phthalocyanine (Fe-PC). The specific surface areas of Fe-TCPC and Fe-PC were $26.46\;m^2/g\;and\;11.77\;m^2/g$, respectively. The pore volumes of Fe-TCPC and Fe-PC were $0.14\;cm^3/g\;and\;0.06\;cm^3/g$, respectively. The adsorption capability of triethyl amine calculated by breakthrough curve at 220 ppm of equilibrium concentration was 29.2 mmoL/g for Fe-TCPC and 0.8 mmoL/g for Fe-PC. The removal efficiency of dimethyl sulfide of Fe-TCPC and Fe-PC in batch experiment of 225 ppm of initial concentration were 44.9% and 28.9%, respectively. The removal efficiency of trimethyl amine of Fe-TCPC and Fe-PC in batch experiment of 118 ppm of initial concentration were approximately 100.0% and 33.9%, respectively.

  • Washing technique using solubilization and surfactant as a extractant was studied by removing contaminants from the cohesive soil contaminated with heavy metal. For this purpose, the laboratory desorption batch tests were peformed in the kaolinite contaminated with lead by using acetic acid as a solubilization and SDS as a anionic surfactant. In desorption batch tests, the effects of extractant concentration and mixing ratio were investigated and also the coupling effects of acetic acid added with surfactant were considered. Test results show that the removal efficiency of acetic acid as a extractant in the kaolinite contaminated with lead increased with increasing the concentration of acetic acid and the acetic acid was found to be more effective when adding CMC 2 or 3 of surfactant. Additionally, regardless of the initial concentration, the efficiency of lead removal from the contaminated soil increased with increasing shaking ratio.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the removal efficiency of volitile organic compounds in soil, and the mechanism of desorption by bench scale microwave heating, Silt soil used for experiment and was impregnated with toluene, tetrachloroethylene, o-xylene and p-dichlorobenzene and the microwave treatment was conducted in a modified domestic microwave oven : 2450MHz, 700W. According to the results of the research the removal efficiency was improved with increasing water contents and the soil temperature appeared to plateau period extending to 2-3minutes corresponds to the temperature a which steam distillation was expected. The value of removal rate constant (k) were calculated on dry and moisty silt soil, respectively, which showed linear with increasing microwave heating time. Therefore, addition of a certain amount of water to the contaminated soil can efficiently enhance the ability of the soil to absorb microwave energy and promote the evaporation of the volitile contaminants.

  • The adsorption characteristics of methyl iodide generated from the simulated off-gas stream on various adsorbents such as silver ion-exchanged zeolite (AgX), zeocarbon and activated carbon were investigated. An extensive evaluation was made on the optimal silver ion-exchanged level for the effective removal of methyl iodide at temperature up to 38$0^{\circ}C$. The degree of adsorption efficiency of methyl iodide on silver ion-exchanged zeolite is strongly dependent of silver ion-amount and process temperature. The influence of temperature, methyl iodide concentration and silver ion-exchanged level on the adsorption efficiency is closely related to the pore characteristics of adsorbents. It would be facts that the effective silver ion-exchanged level was about 10 wt%, based on the degree of silver utilization for the removal of methyl iodide.

  • This study presents the comparative filtration performance evaluation of automotive fuel filters based on the theory of Beta ratio. For the experiments, the fuel component's test stand incorporating the multi-pass filtration test circuit was developed. A mathematical description of filtration process in general was derived. And the theoretical basis of multi-pass test and the test procedure were described in detail. Experimental results revealed that domestic fuel filter tested could not maintain consistent Beta ratio, that is filtration efficiency, although it had the holding capacity of contaminants close to the specification at maximum pressure drop across the filter assembly. The results of experiments and simulations also showed that filtration system model could be refined including desorption ratio to estimate the variable Beta ratio in service life.
