  • Distance Education is a non-traditional mode of training and can take many forms, one of which is the use of Computer Based Training (CBT). This paper reviews various quality assurance models for designing the delivery of programmes at the universities and other training institutions. It presents the findings of a CBT research that is currently being carried out at the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, University of the West Indies, Trinidad. The significance of the research is discussed with particular emphasis on the influence of curricula sequencing on knowledge acquisition in learners of varying cognitive styles. The paper concludes that adherence to quality assurance principles could result in the enhanced performance of users of the CBT.

  • This paper presents a model for designing cellular manufacturing systems (CMS) by integrating system cost, machine reliability, and preventive maintenance (PM) planning. In a CMS, a part is processed using alternative process routes, each consisting of a sequence of visits to machines. Thus, a level of 'system reliability' is associated with the machines along the process route assigned to a part type. Assuming machine reliabilities to follow the Weibull distribution, the model assigns the machines to cells, and selects, for each part type, a process route which maximizes the overall system reliability and minimizes the total costs of manufacturing operations, machine underutilization, and inter-cell material handling. The model also incorporates a reliability based PM plan and an algorithm to implement the plan. The algorithm determines effective PM intervals for the CMS machines based on a group maintenance policy and thus minimizes the maintenance costs subject to acceptable machine reliability thresholds. The model is a large mixed integer linear program, and is solved using LINGO. The results point out that integrating PM in the CMS design improves the overall system reliability markedly, and reduces the total costs significantly.

  • Recently, A manufacturing formula centered of the customer is one of the most important parts for the company competition. Especially, it is the matters of weight and importance that Make to Order(MTO) and Make to stock(MTS) is considered at the same time for designing manufacturing system based the order effectly. This paper suggests a alternative Available to promise(ATP) and capable to promise(CTP) to confirm the delivery time to customer, how to link mid-long term production plan with short term daily based scheduling, how to relate middle processes of device based industry to mid-long term plan through the example of S company in a manufacturing formula mixed MTO and MTS

  • This paper is to model a 30-shape product applying mathematically the data acquired from a 3D scanner and using an Automatic Design Program. The research studied in th reverse engineering up to now has been developed continuously and surprisingly. However, forming 3D-shape solid models in CAE and CAM, based on the research, the study leaves much to be desired. Especially, analyses and studies reverse-designing automatically using measured data after manufacturing. Consequently, we are going to acquire geometric data using an 3D scanner in this study with which we will open a new field of reverse engineering by a program which can design a 3D-shape solid model in a CAD-based program automatically.

  • This Paper deals with the weight-lowering and the traits of NVH(Noise, Vibration and Harshness) by the development of tubular shaft replacing the existing solid Drive Shaft for the lighter and less-noisy automobiles. By the review of Swaging Process this study reveals the various forming traits of Swaging, one of the forming methods for tubular shafts. Furthermore, it showed the possibility of Drive Shaft manufacturing through designing & manufacturing of Swaging machine for tubular shaft, and the production ar analysis of the tubular shaft with the relevant process and tools. This study also shows that the forming by swaging not only makes the mass production of tubular Drive Shaft possible but also may be widely applied to other products with many advantages in review of dimensional precision, thickness change, hardness increase and surface roughness of the swaged products.

  • This paper describes a task level cell programming environment that deals with difficulties in programming Flexible Manufacturing Cells (FMCs), and consists of the cell programming editor and the automatic generation module. In the cell programming editor, cell programs can be developed with task- oriented cell specifications that reduces the amount of details to be considered by cell programmers. The automatic generation module transforms task specifications into executable programs used by cell constituents. The development tool in designing the environment is an object-oriented approach which provides a simple to use and intuitive user interface, and allows for an easy development of object models associated with the environment. Test results are illustrated in order to demonstrate the applicability of the developed envifonment.

  • This paper presents a design guidance of jig/fixture for flexible manufacturing system based on the verification of a base assembly motion instability. In flexible assembly system, the base assembly needs to be maintained in its assembled state without being taken apart. This requires stability in motion while the base assembly is handled or tilted. Therefore, the instability of the base assembly motion should be considered when determining the guide line of designing jig/fixture by evaluating a degree of the motion instability of the base assembly. To derive the instability, first we inference collision free assembly directions by extracting separable directions for the mating parts and calculate the separability which gives informations as to how the parts can be easily separated. Using these results, we determine the instability evaluated by summing all the modified separabilities of each component part within base assembly.

  • A methodology to design symmetrically laminated fibre-reinforced structures under transverse loads for minimum weight, with manufacturing uncertainty in the ply angle, is described. The ply angle and the ply thickness are the design variables, and the Tsai-Wu failure criteria is the design constraint implemented. It is assumed that the probability of any tolerance value occurring within the tolerance band, compared with any other, is equal, and thus the approach is a worst-case scenario approach. The finite element method, based on Mindlin plate and shell theory, is implemented, and thus effects like bending-twisting coupling are accounted for. The Golden Section method is used as the search algorithm, but the methodology is flexible enough to allow any appropriate finite element formulation, search algorithm and failure criterion to be substituted. In order to demonstrate the procedure, laminated plates with varying aspect ratios and boundary conditions are optimally designed and compared.

  • Recently, a quite large number of investigation is published on the subject of Flexible Manufacturing System which can cope with the volatile market demand and the variety of product. Minimum requirement of designing FMS is depicted and by investigating the communication system between the machine tool and the cell control computer, ana between the central computer and the cell control computer, when it is formed as a sub-system of an FEM, the software can be evolved to the control software of the total Flexible Manufacturing System. It is developed the communication system between the central computer and the cell control computer which is the basic structure of the control architecture of FMS under the concept of DNC (Direct Numerical Control). It is used CYBER 180-830 as the central computer, and GMC-1100 computer as the cell control computer, and the main basic program is developed and tested, thus forming a DNC system which can be used in educational environment.

  • Recently, High accuracy and precision are required in various industrial field especially, semiconductor manufacturing apparatus, Ultra precision positioning apparatus, Information field and so on. Positioning technology is a very important one among them. As such technology has been rapidly developed, this field needs the positioning accuracy as high as submicron. It is expected that the accuracy of 10nm and 1nm is required in precision work and ultra precision work field, respectively by the beginning of 2000s. High speed and low vibration are also needed. This work deals with the design method and control system of Ultra precision positioning apparatus. Control performance and stability analysis were performed in advance by modeling and designing the controller with Simulink.
