In general, conventional analysis and design of reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures overlook the role of beam-column (RCBC) joints. Nowadays, the rigid joint model is one of the most common for RCBC joints: the joint is assumed to be rigid (unable to deform) and stronger than the adjacent beams and columns (does not fail before them). This model is popular because (i) the application of the capacity design principles excludes the possibility of the joint failing before the adjacent beams and (ii) many believe that the actual behaviour of RCBC joints designed according to the seismic codes produced mainly after the 1980s can be assumed to be nominally rigid. This study investigates the relevance of the deformation of RCBC joints in a standard pushover analysis at several levels: frame, storey, element and cross-section. Accordingly, a RC frame designed according to preliminary versions of EN 1992-1-1 and EN 1998-1 was analysed, considering the nonlinear behaviour of beams and columns by means of a standard sectional fibre model. Two alternative models were used for the RCBC joints: the rigid model and an explicit component based nonlinear model. The effect of RCBC joints modelling was found to be twofold: (i) the flexibility of the joints substantially increases the frame lateral deformation for a given load (30 to 50%), and (ii) in terms of seismic performance, it was found that joint flexibility (ii-1) appears to have a minor effect on the force and displacement corresponding to the performance point (seismic demand assessed at frame level), but (ii-2) has a major influence on the seismic demand when assessed at storey, element and cross-section levels.
Aggregate Production Planning determines levels of production, human resources, inventory to maximize company's profits and fulfill customer's demands based on demand forecasts. Since performance of aggregate production planning heavily depends on accuracy of given forecasting demands, choosing an accurate forecasting method should be antecedent for achieving a good aggregate production planning. Generally, typical forecasting error metrics such as MSE (Mean Squared Error), MAD (Mean Absolute Deviation), MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error), and CFE (Cumulated Forecast Error) are utilized to choose a proper forecasting method for an aggregate production planning. However, these metrics are designed only to measure a difference between real and forecast demands and they are not able to consider any results such as increasing cost or decreasing profit caused by forecasting error. Consequently, the traditional metrics fail to give enough explanation to select a good forecasting method in aggregate production planning. To overcome this limitation of typical metrics for forecasting method this study suggests a new metric, WACFE (Weighted Absolute and Cumulative Forecast Error), to evaluate forecasting methods. Basically, the WACFE is designed to consider not only forecasting errors but also costs which the errors might cause in for Aggregate Production Planning. The WACFE is a product sum of cumulative forecasting error and weight factors for backorder and inventory costs. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed metric by conducting intensive experiments with demand data sets from M3-competition. Finally, we showed that the WACFE provides a higher correlation with the total cost than other metrics and, consequently, is a better performance in selection of forecasting methods for aggregate production planning.

Background: Despite workplaces having policies on fire evacuation, many employees still fail to evacuate when there is a fire alarm. The Reasoned Action Approach is designed to reveal the beliefs underlying people's behavioral decisions and thus suggests causal determinants to be addressed with interventions designed to facilitate behavior. This study is a uses a Reasoned Action Approach salient belief elicitation to identify university employees' perceived advantages/disadvantages, approvers/disapprovers, and facilitators/barriers toward them leaving the office building immediately the next time they hear a fire alarm at work. Methods: Employees at a large public United States Midwestern university completed an online cross-sectional survey. A descriptive analysis of the demographic and background variables was completed, and a six-step inductive content analysis of the open-ended responses was conducted to identify beliefs about leaving during a fire alarm. Results: Regarding consequence, participants perceived that immediately leaving during a fire alarm at work had more disadvantages than advantages, such as low risk perception. Regarding referents, supervisors and coworkers were significant approvers with intention to leave immediately. None of the perceived advantages were significant with intention. Participants listed access and risk perception as significant circumstances with the intention to evacuate immediately. Conclusion: Norms and risk perceptions are key determinants that may influence employees to evacuate immediately during a fire alarm at work. Normative-based and attitude-based interventions may prove effective in increasing the fire safety practices of employees.
Pick-and-place systems using suction cups have been being widely used and continuously developed in production automation. There are, however, some drawbacks in constructing such systems. One of them is that it generates high level noise due to air compressors. And the system must have complex constitutions of mechanical component such as air compressors, air tubes, air valves, etc. Moreover, it needs continuous air supply to maintain vacuum in suction cups. If there is a failure in any suction cup, the total suction system may fail owing to air leakage. To overcome these drawbacks, we propose PMS (Permanent Magnet Suction) mechanism which has permanent magnets for vacuuming suction cups with no air compressor. The basic concept of PMS mechanism is to rotate permanent magnets with fixed angle. Simple rotation of permanent magnets changes the direction of the magnetic force applied at the suction cups. Since each suction cup has no direct connection with any of the others, the air leakage at one suction cup is not critical. The proposed suction mechanism was designed and fabricated. With some experiments, the feasibility and performance of the PMS mechanism was shown. The strong points of the PMS mechanism are in its simple structure, generating low noise, high energy efficiency, and no need of continuous energy supply.
This research focuses on producing a cheap polymer, and also experiments for marking with the high strength polymer concrete structures. At present only a few tests on shear behavior in polymer reinforced concrete beams(PRC) have been reported. In the current experiments, the reinforced concrete beams with polymer fraction are investigated. The beams in this study are supported by conventional stirrups at appropriate intervals and they are designed to take static loads. The strength of beams are measured and the behavior of beams under each loading are oh served in order to determine some advantages of adding polymer to reinforced concrete beams. The static testing data consist of load, displacement, and strain at specified reinforcement locations, and the support displacement In the static tests, it has been observed that the beams fail in the same way as RC. However, it is observed to he rather weak in impact, hut it can he said that its increase of strength and excellency of repairing are verified. Consequently this work strongly suggests that the steam-curing or the air-curing or the air-curing must be performed to increase the strength.
EMB is considered as the next generation braking mechanism because it has simple structure and is environment friendly. However, as other brake mechanisms, EMB should be operated reliably for any operating conditions. EMB should be designed with fail-safe and fault-tolerant control concepts which require robust fault detection algorithms for various possible faults. In the design of fault detection algorithms, it is very difficult to construct faulty conditions in real EMB and thus, simulations are often used to emulate the faulty conditions. In this paper, a simulation tool is developed using the commercial software to emulate gear faults in the EMB mechanism. A backlash compensation algorithm is introduced based on contact point detection because screw backlash causes a delay in clamping force response time.
The present study was designed to investigate the effects of green tea extract (CUMC6335) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on secretion of catecholamines (CA) in the isolated perfused rat adrenal gland. ill the presence of CUMC6335 (100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL) into an adrenal vein for 60 min, CA secretory responses evoked by ACh(5.32 mM), high $K^+$ (56 mM) and Bay-K-8644 (10$\mu$M for 4 min) from the isolated perfused rat adrenal glands were greatly inhibited in a time-dependent fashion. However, EGCG (8 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL) did not affect CA release evoked by ACh, high $K^+$ and Bay-K-8644. CUMC6335 itself did fail to affect basal catecholamine output. Taken together, these results demonstrate that CUMC6335 inhibits greatly CA secretion evoked by stimulation of cholinergic nicotinic receptors as well as by the direct membrane deplarization from the isolated perfused rat adrenal gland. It is felt that this inhibitory effect of CUMC6335 may be due to blocking action of the L-type dihydropyridine calcium channels in the rat adrenal medullary chromaffin cells, which is relevant to the cholinergic nicotinic blockade. It seems that there is a big difference in mode of action between CUMC6335 and EGCG.
This paper presents a study on the behaviour of the joints of segmental concrete bridges with external prestressing, focusing on the structural response of dry non-epoxied joints with shear keys. A Finite Element joint model to study such structures is validated modelling eight concrete panel tests. The most important feature of this model is that it has been validated with experimental tests on concrete panels which were specifically designed to fail in shear. Interface elements are used to reproduce the non linear behaviour of the joint and parameters deduced from the tests are used to define the constitutive law of these elements. This joint model is of great importance because it will permit the development of a structural model that faithfully reproduces the behaviour of these structures under combined flexure and shear and the study of its global behaviour after the opening of the joints. Interesting conclusions about the behaviour of the dry joints, about the contribution of the different mechanisms transferring shear (friction and cohesion) and about the shear stress distribution in the joint have been reached.
