Faulkner's Narrative Strategies and the Nature of History in Absalom, Absalom!

  • Absalom, Absalom! is not only about family history but also about the nature of reconstructing history. Faulkner shows us what will happen if we give too much credit to the person having the authority; he first makes us listen to Rosa, so we just listen without doubt until we arrive at the question of the objectivity of her narration, when we get to know Sutpen's design. Meanings of "facts" change depending on who perceives the facts. The incremental repetition of the narrative in the novel resembles the process of our thinking mind and the process of history being constructed. Time is a significant element in determining the meaning of an event, not only because the event cannot be understood without its social, cultural context of the contemporary, but also because only the later events make it possible for the perceiver to categorize it in its proper place in history. Furthermore, through his narrative strategy, Faulkner suggests that imagination play a large part in recreating history. He blurs the distinction between facts and imagination, making us regard Shreve's and Quentin's conjectures as facts in several ways. The conversation between father and son, and the two brothers, which is an imagination constructed through the clues Mr Compson has offered, becomes a fact willingly accepted by the readers as well as Shreve and Quentin. The people in the past, present, and future may be very much unlikely to agree on the same event, because the gap in temporality will keep widening our perceptions. Faulkner demonstrates the nature of history in such a way that we can compare our understanding of the Sutpens' history in the earlier and later part of the novel through repetitions.

  • Domestic industry has a long history, but it has been suffering for a long time due to its poor competitiveness in management ability, supply of materials, technological development, sales marketing, and distribution networks. Moreover, the industry has not established its strong presence in the world market but is exposed to increasingly greater agonies because of inactive domestic demands, increase rate of import versus export, diversified government policies, and non-selective introduction of high-quality and low-priced foreign named brands of ceramics into the country. Theses factors have partly contributed to consumers' low or negative recognition.

과학사와 융합인재교육의 적용 실태와 과학사를 활용한 설계 기반의 융합인재교육 수업에 대한 초등교사들의 인식 (Analysis on the Utilization of History of Science and STEAM and Elementary School Teachers' Perceptions about Design-based STEAM Instruction Applying the History of Science in Science Class)

  • 이 연구는 과학 수업에서 과학사와 융합인재교육의 활용 실태와 과학사를 활용한 설계 기반의 융합인재교육 수업에 대한 초등교사들의 인식을 분석하는 것이다. 따라서 초등학교 과학 수업에서 과학사와 융합인재교육의 활용 실태와 과학사를 활용한 설계 기반의 융합인재교육 수업에 대한 교육적 가치를 알아보기 위해 설문지는 Shin & Han(2011)과 Lee & Shin(2014)의 연구와 Park et al.(2010)의 연구를 바탕으로 연구문제에 맞게 수정하여 총 20문항의 설문지를 개발하였다. 개발한 설문지는 D시와 G시 지역에 재직하고 있는 201명의 초등교사를 대상으로 설문을 실시하여 그 결과를 분석하였다. 이 연구의 결과 초등교사들은 과학 수업에서 과학사를 적극적으로 다루지 않으며, 주로 학생들에게 간단히 소개하면서 스스로 읽어보게 하였다. 초등교사들은 '충분하지 않은 시간'을 이유로 융합인재교육을 적극적으로 다루고 있지 않으며, '창의적 문제해결력' 에 지도 중점을 두고 있지만 이 단계를 매우 지도하기 어려워하고 있었다. 또한 초등교사은 과학사를 활용한 설계 기반의 융합인재교육수업의 교육적 가치에 대해서 매우 긍정적으로 인식하고 있었다. 특히 과학적 원리와 과거 과학자의 문제해결의 사례를 통해 학생들에게 창의적 설계와 문제해결의 아이디어와 실마리를 제공해 줄 수 있다고 인식하였다. 결론적으로 융합인재교육이 초등학교 현장에서 성공적으로 적용되기 위해서는 이와 같은 초등교사들의 과학사와 융합인재교육의 활용실태에 대한 인식과 과학사를 활용한 설계 기반의 융합인재교육 수업의 교육적 가치에 대한 긍정적인 인식을 바탕으로 향후 보다 구체적인 과학사를 활용한 설계 기반의 융합인재교육 프로그램을 개발하고 적용하여 학교 현장에 보급할 필요가 있겠다.

Direct displacement based seismic design for single storey steel concentrically braced frames

  • The direct displacement based design (DDBD) approach is spreading in the field of seismic design for many types of structures. This paper is carried out to present a robust approach for the DDBD procedure for single degree of freedom (SDOF) concentrically braced frames (CBFs). Special attention is paid to the choice of an equivalent viscous damping (EVD) model that represents the behaviour of a series of full scale shake table tests. The performance of the DDBD methodology of the CBFs is verified by two ways. Firstly, by comparing the DDBD results with a series of full-scale shake table tests. Secondly, by comparing the DDBD results with a quantified nonlinear time history analysis (NLTHA). It is found that the DDBD works relatively well and could predict the base shear forces ($F_b$) and the required brace cross sectional sizes of the actual values obtained from shake table tests and NLTHA. In other words, when comparing the ratio of $F_b$ estimated from the DDBD to the measured values in shake table tests, the mean and coefficient of variation ($C_V$) are found to be 1.09 and 0.12, respectively. Moreover, the mean and $C_V$ of the ratios of $F_b$ estimated from the DDBD to the values obtained from NLTHA are found to be 1.03 and 0.12, respectively. Thus, the DDBD methodology presented in this paper has been shown to give accurate and reliable results.

  • Fatigue life prediction of mechanical components is necessary to develop new products, which is very expensive and time-consuming. This paper reviews technologies proposed for computation of dynamic stress in mechanical components. The methods based on multibody dynamics are considering more real operational conditions than other methods. The technology for fatigue life prediction without the prototype for experiment results in cost and time saving. This technology can be applied to design of various mechanical components like carbody.

  • The dynamic inelastic analysis is now often performed for the safe structural design against the seismic events or explosions. Several powerful methods of dynamic inelastic analysis such as direct intergration methods and modal superposition methods were developed with the development of computers during the last three decades. This type of analysis generally adopts the step-by-step time-integration procedure and gives a complete time history of the evolution of the structure.(omitted)

  • The durability test, along with the crashworthiness test, requires the most time and expense in the vehicle development process. The durability design using CAE tools reduces the time required for both the durability test and actual vehicle production. Existing dynamic stress analyses designed fir the analysis of vehicle fatigue mainly calculate the dynamic stress history and fatigue after performing dynamic analysis and stress analysis with relevant software applications and then superpositioning the dynamic load history and stress influence coefficient at each joint. This approach is a complex process, taking into account the flexibility of the parts. It is, however, incapable of giving accurate consideration to the contacts between components, the non-linearity of materials, and tire-road surface interactions. This approach also requires that the analysts have an expertise in software applications of various kinds or an expert in each area must perform the analysis. This requires as a great deal of manpower and time. In order to complement the existing approaches for dynamic stress analysis, this study aims at the following: (1) to suggest the simple and accurate analysis technique which is capable of producing all the possible necessary results; (2) to reduce dramatically the time and manpower needed to construct a model designed to analyze dynamics, quasi-static stress, and fatigue; and (3) to enable an accurate analysis of fatigue by improving the accuracy of dynamic stress. we verify the presented analysis method through durability evaluation of the knuckle of passenger car.

Elasto-plastic time history analysis of an asymmetrical twin-tower rigid-connected structure

  • The structure analyzed in this paper has particular building style and special structural system. It is a rigid-connected twin-tower skyscraper with asymmetrical distribution of stiffness and masses in two towers. Because of the different stiffness between the north and the south towers, the torsion seismic vibration is significant. In this paper, in order to study the seismic response of the structure under both frequent low-intensity earthquakes as well as rare earthquakes at the levels of intensity 7, the analysis model is built and analyzed with NosaCAD. NosaCAD is an nonlinear structure analysis software based on second-development of AutoCAD with ObjectARX. It has convenient modeling function, high computational efficiency and diversity post-processing functions. The deformations, forces and damages of the structure are investigated based on the analysis. According to the analysis, there is no damage on the structure under frequent earthquakes, and the structure has sufficient capacity and ductility to resist rare earthquakes. Therefore the structure can reach the goal of no damage under frequent earthquakes and no collapse under rare earthquakes. The deformation of the structure is below the limit in Chinese code. The time sequence and distribution of damages on tubes are reasonable, which can dissipate some dynamic energy. At last, according to forces, load-carrying capacity and damage of elements, there are some suggestions on increasing the reinforcement in the core tube at base and in stiffened stories.

Generation of critical and compatible seismic ground acceleration time histories for high-tech facilities

  • High-tech facilities engaged in the production of semiconductors and optical microscopes are extremely expensive, which may require time-domain analysis for seismic resistant design in consideration of the most critical directions of seismic ground motions. This paper presents a framework for generating three-dimensional critical seismic ground acceleration time histories compatible with the response spectra specified in seismic design codes. The most critical directions of seismic ground motions associated with the maximum response of a high-tech facility are first identified. A new numerical method is then proposed to derive the power spectrum density functions of ground accelerations which are compatible with the response spectra specified in seismic design codes in critical directions. The ground acceleration time histories for the high-tech facility along the structural axes are generated by applying the spectral representation method to the power spectrum density function matrix and then multiplied by envelope functions to consider nonstationarity of ground motions. The proposed framework is finally applied to a typical three-story high-tech facility, and the numerical results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach.

The parameter of design variable is used for finite elemt modeling of a excavator.
