Mixed Flow and Oxygen Transfer Characteristics of Vertical Orifice Ejector (수직 오리피스 이젝터의 혼합유동 및 산소전달 특성)

  • The objective of this study is to experimentally investigate the mixed flow behaviors and oxygen transfer characteristics of a vertical orifice ejector. The experimental apparatus consisted of an electric motor-pump, an orifice ejector, a circulation water tank, an air compressor, a high speed camera unit and control or measurement accessories. The mass ratio was calculated using the measured primary flow rate and suction air flow rate with experimental parameters. The visualization images of vertically injected mixed jet issuing from the orifice ejector were qualitatively analyzed. The volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient was calculated using the measured dissolved oxygen concentration. At a constant primary flow rate, the mass ratio and oxygen transfer coefficient increase with the air pressure of compressor. At a constant air pressure of the compressor, the mass ratio decreases and the oxygen transfer coefficient increases as the primary flow rate increases. The residence time and dispersion of fine air bubbles and the penetration of mixed flow were found to be important parameters for the oxygen transfer rate owing to the contact area and time of two phases.

Transonic buffet alleviation on 3D wings: wind tunnel tests and closed-loop control investigations

  • The presented paper gives an overview of several projects addressing the experimental characterization and control of the buffet phenomenon on 3D turbulent wings in transonic flow conditions. This aerodynamic instability induces strong wall pressure fluctuations and therefore limits flight domain. Consequently, to enlarge the latter but also to provide more flexibility during the design phase, it is interesting to try to delay the buffet onset. This paper summarizes the main investigations leading to the achievement of open and closed-loop buffet control and its experimental demonstration. Several wind tunnel tests campaigns, performed on a 3D half wing/fuselage body, enabled to characterize the buffet aerodynamic instability and to study the efficiency of innovative fluidic control devices designed and manufactured by ONERA. The analysis of the open-loop databases demonstrated the effects on the usual buffet characteristics, especially on the shock location and the separation areas on the wing suction side. Using these results, a closed-loop control methodology based on a quasi-steady approach was defined and several architectures were tested for various parameters such as the input signal, the objective function, the tuning of the feedback gain. All closed-loop methods were implemented on a dSPACE device able to estimate in real time the fluidic actuators command calculated mainly from the unsteady pressure sensors data. The efficiency of delaying the buffet onset or limiting its effects was demonstrated using the quasi-steady closed-loop approach and tested in both research and industrial wind tunnel environments.

Low Speed Design of Rear Rotor in Contra-Rotating Axial Flow Pump

  • The application of contra-rotating rotors for higher specific speed pump has been proposed in our studies, which is in principle effective for reducing the rotational speed and/or the pump size under the same specification of conventional axial flow pump. In the previous experiments of our prototype, the cavitation inception at the tip region of the rear rotor rather than that of the front rotor and the strong potential interaction from the suction surface of the rear rotor blade to the pressure surface of the front one were observed, indicating the possibility to further improve the pump performance by optimizing rotational speed combination between the two rotors. The present research aims at the design of rear rotor with lower rotational speed. Considering the fact that the incoming flow velocity defects at the tip region of the rear rotor, an integrated inflow model of 'forced vortex' and 'free vortex' is employed. The variation of maximum camber location from hub to tip as well as other related considerations are also taken into account for further performance improvement. The ideas cited above are separately or comprehensively applied in the design of three types of rear rotor, which are subsequently simulated in ANSYS CFX to evaluate the related pump performance and therefore the whole low speed design idea. Finally, the experimental validation is carried out on one type to offer further proofs for the availability of the whole design method.

Flow Characteristics of Central-Driven Ejector with Design Parameters (중앙구동 이젝터의 설계변수에 따른 유동특성)

  • The objective of this study is to experimentally investigate the effect of design parameter on the mass ratio of a central-driven ejector. The design parameters are the primary nozzle area and distance ratios, diffuser exit-area ratio and mixing-tube length ratio. The experimental setup was an open-loop continuous circulation system which has a movable nozzle ejector, an electric motor-pump, a water tank, a control panel and high-speed camera unit. We calculated the mass ratio using the measured primary and suction-flow rates with the experimental parameter of primary water-flow rate or pressure. The results showed that the mass ratio increased with the primary nozzle distance ratio and mixing tube length ratio, while the mass ratio decreased with the primary nozzle-area ratio and diffuser exit-area ratio.

  • We present a design methodology for horizontal-axis tidal turbine blades based on blade element momentum theory, which has been used for aerodynamic design and power-performance analysis in the wind-energy industry. We design a 2-blade-type 1 MW HATT blade, which consists of a single airfoil (S814), and we present the detailed design parameters in this paper. Tidal turbine blades can experience cavitation problems at the blade-tip region, and this should be seriously considered during the early design stage. We perform computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations considering the cavitation model to predict the power performance and to investigate the flow characteristics of the blade. The maximum power coefficient is shown to be about 47 under the condition where TSR = 7, and we observed cavitation on the suction and pressure sides of the blade.

  • The core design technology for the multi-effect desalination plant using the thermo compressor (MED-TVC) was investigated by the performance test of multi effect desalination plant in this paper. The final G.O.R (gain of output ratio) of MED-TVC type desalination plant is strongly affected by the performance of thermo-vapor compressor. The present experiments for the desalinating capacity and G.O.R were obtained for the range of the motive steam pressure, 266.0, 250.0, 230.0 and 200.0 kPa. And as a practical problem, to investigate the influence of the sea water temperature to the G.O.R, the inlet steam temperature of the suction water vapor was changed in the range of $311.2{\sim}324.2$ K in the present experiment. Through the experiments, the maximum value of G.O.R was 8.5 at the condition of the motive steam pressure, 136.0 kPa and the minimum value of G.O.R was 8.1 at the condition of the motive steam pressure, 266.0 kPa. And it was confirmed that the range of desalination capacity was $355.2{\sim}264.0$ ton/day in the normal operation condition.

  • A new cyclone system for the vacuum cleaner to collect dusts has been studied experimentally and numerically to meet the constant suction power, hygienic exhaust and a reduction of maintenance cost. The cyclone system of the vacuum cleaner consists of twin cyclones for improving dust collection efficiency. The first. cyclone catches large dust particles and the second one having two separated flows to decrease pressure drop collects small dust particles. The optimal design factors such as dust collection efficiency, pressure drop, and cut-size are investigated from the experimental results by the Taguchi method. Cyclone cleaner systems designed in this study has a good Performance taking into account the dust collection efficiency of 93% and the cut-size of $1.6{\mu}m$ in mass median diameter at the flow rate of 1 CMM. The cyclone vacuum cleaner showed the potential to be an effective method to collect dusts generated in the household.

Unsaturated Shear Strength Characteristics of Nakdong River Silty Sand (낙동강 실트질 모래의 불포화 전단강도 특성)

  • There are many technical problems, which can not be resolved by the concept of saturated soil mechanics. Unsaturated soils show an apparent cohesion due to negative pore pressure and relatively lower permeability due to entrapped air compared to saturated soils. The determination of engineering properties of soils with various moisture content is very important to evaluate shear strength and stability of natural and engineered soils. So various researches should be made on unsaturated soils. Especially, sandy soils are widely distributed near Nakdong river, one of the four rivers where Restoration Projects were carried out. Many structures such as dams, flood control facilities, detention facilities and reservoirs have been built in this area. In this study, unsaturated triaxial compressive tests were conducted on sands or silty sands at Nakdong river in order to provide their fundamental characteristics for design and construction of geotechnical structures. As a result of the tests, the maximum deviator stress increased as the confining stress and matric suction increased. The cohesion increased non-linearly as the matric suction increased, but the angle of internal friction was marginally changed.

  • Performance tests of a turbopump for the developing 7-tonf liquid rocket engine were conducted. The performance of turbopump components and their power matching were measured and examined firstly under the LN2 and water environment. In the real propellant(LOX and kerosene) environment tests, design and off-design performances of turbopump were fully verified. During the off-design tests, turbopump running time was set the same as engine operating time and pump inlet pressure were set lower than nominal operating value in order to investigate pump suction capability. It have been verified that subject turbopump satisfies required performance - flow rate, head, suction performance and operational time - in the operating regime of developing liquid rocket engine.

Reliable Assessment of Rainfall-Induced Slope Instability (강우로 인한 사면의 불안정성에 대한 신뢰성 있는 평가)

  • Many slope failures are induced by rainfall infiltration. A lot of recent researches are therefore focused on rainfall-induced slope instability and the rainfall infiltration is recognized as the important triggering factor. The rainfall infiltrates into the soil slope and makes the matric suction lost in the slope and even the positive pore water pressure develops near the surface of the slope. They decrease the resisting shear strength. In Korea, a few public institutions suggested conservative slope design guidelines that assume a fully saturated soil condition. However, this assumption is irrelevant and sometimes soil properties are misused in the slope design method to fulfill the requirement. In this study, a more relevant slope stability evaluation method is suggested to take into account the real rainfall infiltration phenomenon. Unsaturated soil properties such as shear strength, soil-water characteristic curve and permeability for Korean weathered soils were obtained by laboratory tests and also estimated by artificial neural network models. For real-time assessment of slope instability, failure warning criteria of slope based on deterministic and probabilistic analyses were introduced to complement uncertainties of field measurement data. The slope stability evaluation technique can be combined with field measurement data of important factors, such as matric suction and water content, to develop an early warning system for probably unstable slopes due to the rainfall.
