The concept of performance based seismic design has been gradually accepted by the earthquake engineering profession recently, in which the cost-effectiveness criterion is one of the most important principles and more attention is paid to the structural performance at the inelastic stage. Since there are many uncertainties in seismic design, reliability analysis is a major task in performance based seismic design. However, structural reliability analysis may be very costly and time consuming because the limit state function is usually a highly nonlinear implicit function with respect to the basic design variables, especially for the complex large-scale structures for dynamic and nonlinear analysis. Understanding statistical properties of the structural inelastic deformation, which is the aim of the present paper, is helpful to develop an efficient approximate approach of reliability analysis. The present paper studies the statistical properties of the maximum elastoplastic story drift of steel frames subjected to earthquake load. The randomness of earthquake load, dead load, live load, steel elastic modulus, yield strength and structural member dimensions are considered. Possible probability distributions for the maximum story are evaluated using K-S test. The results show that the choice of the probability distribution for the maximum elastoplastic story drift of steel frames is related to the mean value of the maximum elastoplastic story drift. When the mean drift is small (less than 0.3%), an extreme value type I distribution is the best choice. However, for large drifts (more than 0.35%), an extreme value type II distribution is best.

As the concern for a global energy conservation and environmental protection are increasing, it has been more important thing to correspond with CFC depletion. Alternate refrigerants have merit such as lower global warming effect, but also have demerits such as lower efficiency, miscibility, increasing noise and poor reliability problems. Then we have to develop more efficient, silent and robust compressors to satisfying world-wide demand. In this paper, parametric study on rotary compressor muffler for a room air-conditioner was carried out to investigate the effect of important design variables on noise by using Taguchi robust design method with signal-to-noise(S/N) ratio. Taguchi method seems to be helpful for finding optimum value of design variables for noise level. We also applied neural network to find optimal value of design variables.

The asymptotic extreme value distributions of maxima are a natural choice when designing against future extreme events like flood peaks or wave heights, given a stationary time series. The generalized extreme value distribution (GEV) is often utilised in this context because it is seen as a convenient single expression for extreme event analysis. However, the GEV has a drawback because the location of the distribution bound relative to the data is a discontinuous function of the GEV shape parameter. That is, for annual maxima approximated by the Gumbel distribution, the data is also consistent with a GEV distribution with an upper bound (no lower bound) or a GEV distribution with a lower bound (no upper bound). A more consistent single extreme value expression for design purposes is proposed as the Weibull distribution of smallest extremes, as applied to transformed annual maxima. The Weibull distribution limit holds here for sufficiently large sample sizes, irrespective of the extreme value domain of attraction applicable to the untransformed maxima. The Gumbel, Type 2, and Type 3 extreme value distributions thus become redundant, together with the GEV, because in reality there is only a single asymptotic extreme value distribution required for design purposes - the Weibull distribution of minima as applied to transformed maxima. An illustrative synthetic example is given showing transformed maxima from the normal distribution approaching the Weibull limit much faster than the untransformed sample maxima approach the normal distribution Gumbel limit. Some New Zealand examples are given with the Weibull distribution being applied to reciprocal transformations of annual flood maxima, where the untransformed maxima follow apparently different extreme value distributions.
Purpose : The purpose of this study is to compare the RAM (reliability, availability and maintainability) value in the acquisition phase with operational period for air weapon systems. The objective is to determine if the value of RAM is sufficient in the field, and look for any difference from the target value to some extent. Methods : For a case study, the ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ training aircraft is selected. Data from the two acquisition sources are utilized. One is the operational data in domestic aircraft through research and development, and the other is the data from imported aircraft. The two different sources were collected independently and distinctly. Results : According to the analysis, the domestic aircraft shows high deviation in RAM value compare to the imported systems. This is due to the effort of continuous reliability improvement. In the aspect of maintainability, the result shows a slight deviation, and the availability meets the requirement. Conclusion : The results of this study can be used in finding a way that can be effectively applied to the sustainability in the weapon system. If the RAM performance is significantly lower than the target value, then it is necessary to improve the design activities so that they can achieve the RAM target value.
The objective of this paper is to evaluate the proposed design by the Value Engineering (VE) analysis for the gravel ballast and the concrete ballast track structures. However, reliabilities about the VE analysis results based on Life-Cycle Cost(LCC) has not been fully benefited from VE implementation due to disregard of basic principles and lack of systematic performance measurement systems. In this paper, the VE analysis using the Delphi survey of professional group is proposed to decide reasonable determinants for investment and alternative design in construction project of railway tracks. Moreover, the efficiency of VE analysis is invested by an application of the developed methodology to track structures.
Viewed as a more systematic approach of creating high quality products and bringing them into market at a lower cost and in significantly less time, it attracts the attention of quality designers to quality function deployment (QFD) approach. In attempt to reduce the design cycle, the industry has responded with concurrent design effort. In a sense, concurrent engineering refers to the integration of various activities within the broad scope of the product life cycle [17]. Over the last ten years, much has been written about QFD but little has been available in terms of the underlying guide methodology. The methodology of QFD is quite simple and many will say that they have done it in the past but just have not formalized it into the form that this discipline requires. QFD ties the product, user, value, and manufacturing viewpoints together in a continuous process of defining the product design and manufacturing requirements. The value viewpoint recognizes the cost to obtain certain functionality, and the manufacturing viewpoint addresses conformance to requirements, but in a broader sense, the variability in production. In this paper, the QFD system acquisitions are described, and two heuristic approaches solving for the complex design process, especially the size reduction of design process and precedence-constrained relationship in QFD are proposed, and the empirical example is illustrated.
This paper presents a conceptual approach to convert customer requirements expressed in ordinary language into a form of qualitative and quantitative functions for developing new products. This approach attempts to combine the concepts of the value engineering and the Kansei engineering. It emphasizes that customer require- ments should be interpreted and reflected on the design of new product. Specific are discussed for extracting subjective requirements and transforming them into qualitative and quantitative functions for product design. This approach is expected to provide the product designer with a systematic efficient tool for incorporating subjective requirements into a product design.

SLSV (single loop single vector) method is to solve the excessive computational cost problem in RBDO (reliability-based design optimization) by decoupling the nested iteration loops. However, the practical use of SLSV method to RBDO case is limited by the instability or inaccuracy of the method since it often diverges or converges to a wrong solution. Thus, in this paper, a new modified SLSV method is proposed. This method improves its convergence capability effectively by utilizing Inactive Design and Active MPP Design together with modified HMV (hybrid mean value) method. The usefulness of the proposed method is also verified through numerical examples.
In this paper, induction machine operation efficiency and torque is improved using Machine Learning based Gene Optimization (ML-GO) Technique is introduced. Optimized Genetic Algorithm (OGA) is used to select the optimal induction machine data. In OGA, selection, crossover and mutation process is carried out to find the optimal electrical machine data for induction machine design. Initially, many number of induction machine data are given as input for OGA. Then, fitness value is calculated for all induction machine data to find whether the criterion is satisfied or not through fitness function (i.e., objective function such as starting to full load torque ratio, rotor current, power factor and maximum flux density of stator and rotor teeth). When the criterion is not satisfied, annealed selection approach in OGA is used to move the selection criteria from exploration to exploitation to attain the optimal solution (i.e., efficient machine data). After the selection process, two point crossovers is carried out to select two crossover points within a chromosomes (i.e., design variables) and then swaps two parent's chromosomes for producing two new offspring. Finally, Adaptive Levy Mutation is used in OGA to select any value in random manner and gets mutated to obtain the optimal value. This process gets iterated till finding the optimal value for induction machine design. Experimental evaluation of ML-GO technique is carried out with performance metrics such as torque, rotor current, induction machine operation efficiency and rotor power factor compared to the state-of-the-art works.

In recent years, LEED-NC (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for New Construction) has become one of the most widely adopted environmental certification systems in the United States. However, according to some researchers, the adoption of the LEED-NC is perceived to add to construction cost and duration compared to conventional building standards. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the economic benefits of LEED-NC to consider how it can be applied worldwide. This study focuses on the impact of LEED-NC on the appraised unit value of parcels in San Francisco County based on the number of LEED-NC Public Transportation Access (PTA) qualified buses, light rail and commuter rail stops, distance to the closest bus, light rail and commuter rail stops, zoning class and parcel size. As a population of interest, San Francisco County was chosen since it is known as a region with well-organized transportation systems including bus, light rail and commuter rail systems. According to the correlation results, this study shows that the appraised land value is significantly affected by LEED-NC PTA, and is correlated to a higher appraised unit value of land parcels.
