Tall Building Database-assisted Design: a Review of NIST Research

  • The purpose of this review paper is to briefly describe main the features of novel procedures developed by the National of Standards and Technology (NIST) for the design of tall buildings. Topics considered in the paper include: the division of tasks between wind and structural engineers; the determination of wind effects with specified mean recurrence intervals by accounting for wind directionality; the risk-consistent design of structures subjected to multiple wind hazards; iterative dynamic analyses and member sizing, including the use of modern optimization approaches; and commonalities of and differences between Database-assisted Design (DAD) and Equivalent Static Wind Loads procedures. An example of the application of the DAD procedure is presented for a reinforced concrete structure. Also included in the paper is an introduction to ongoing research on the estimation of wind load factors or of augmented design mean recurrence intervals commensurate with the uncertainties in the factors that determine the wind effects.

  • User-oriented Design is necessary in planning the interior design of Metropolitan Railroads trains, since this is a typical means of transportation in this modem society and all ages people with different body scale use this facility. However, there are little studies about facility panning and zoning of Metropolitan Railroads train considering users. Therefore, in this study, after completing the checklist based on the current legal standards of facility installation of South Korea and Japan, we examined user's facility and suggest several improvement of the opening 14 metropolitan railroad lines in Seoul. Then, we evaluated this facilities according to 41 standards; general facility(24 standards), safety facility(4 standards), guide facility(11 standards), other facility(4 standards). The result of this study may be summarized as follows. 1) General facility has to be designed to obtain lots of room for storage and this facility should be fixed up tightly with secure system. 2) Safety facility should be designed to minimize a difference of floor-level between threshold of train and ground. Also, using various color and material could help passengers to distinguish different space and facility. 3) Guide facility should be designed to guide passengers to the accurate direction with proper sign design in the pathway of Metropolitan railroad train. Also, more various color, which based on the research about physiological and psychological effect, should be used to guide people. 4) Other facility should equip more visual system using common good and informative contents. Through this study, we try to understand the current interior physical condition of Metropolitan Railroads trains. However, for future studies, it is expected to supplement evaluation standards considering aesthetic design, environmental improvement of indoor air quality and the satisfaction and demand of Metropolitan Railroads trains.

  • Several seismic design standards for fill dams adopted in Japan USA and Korea are reviewed in this study. The review on those standards is tried to provide a thinking way for a new seismic design standard which is urgently requested by the government I. e. the Ministry of Construction & Transportation and the Ministry of Science & Techniology. This study suggest that as a new seismic design standard of fill dam including concrete face rockfill dam(CFRD) the modified earthquake intensity method based on dynamic analysis be adopted in Korea while the dynamic analysis method should be used in evaluatiing the performance of fill dams precisely.

  • 대형선박의 충돌 혹은 좌초와 같은 많은 해양사고는 선박의 조종성능 부족으로 인하여 발생되고 있다. 따라서 IMO(국제해사기구)에서는 1994년 제18회 총회에서 결의서 A.751(18)로서 선박조종성에 대한 잠정기준을 채택하였고, 이 기준은 1994년 7월 1일 이후 건조된 길이 100m 이상의 선박 또는 길이에 관계없이 모든 케미컬탱커 및 개스운반선에 대하여 적용된다. IMO 조종성기준은 크게 설계단계에서의 선회성능과 보침성능 및 최단정지성능으로 대별된다. 이 논문에서는 몇 척의 대형선박에 대한 최초 설계단계에서의 자료를 이용하여 조종성능에 관한 계산 및 시뮬레이션을 행하고, 계산된 결과를 모형실험 결과와 비교, 검토하였으며, IMO 조종성 기준의 타당성에 관하여 검토 고찰하였다.

강재 액체저장탱크의 내진설계를 위한 설계기준 분석 (Comparison of Design Standards for Seismic Design of Steel Liquid Storage Tanks)

  • 본 논문은 강재 액체저장탱크의 내진설계를 위하여 이용되고 있는 Eurocode 8, API 650, NZSEE 등의 해외 설계기준들의 설계방법들을 비교, 분석함으로써, 강재 액체저장탱크의 내진설계를 위한 국내 설계기준을 수립하기 위하여 필요한 주요 사항들에 대한 자료를 제공하고자 하였다. 각 설계기준에서는 강재 액체저장탱크의 내진설계를 위하여 충격성분과 대류성분을 이용한 단순화된 형태의 역학적 모델을 제시하고 있다. Eurocode 8, API 650 등의 설계기준에서는 두 개의 질량을 가지는 역학적 모델을, NZSEE에서는 세 개의 질량을 가지는 역학적 모델을 사용하고 있다. 또한 Eurocode 8, NZSEE은 강도설계법을 사용하고 있으며, API 650은 허용응력설계법을 사용하고 있어 하중 등에 대한 직접적인 비교는 적절하지 않아 역학적 모델에 대한 주요 인자들을 위주로 비교, 검토하였다. 역학적 모델은 설계기준에 따라 차이는 있으나 충격성분 및 대류성분의 질량 및 진동수 등은 유사하게 나타났다. 강재 액체저장탱크에 대한 국내 내진설계기준은 허용응력설계법보다는 하중저항계수설계법을 사용하고, 국내의 실정에 맞는 하중 및 저항 특성을 고려하여 강재 액체저장탱크의 신뢰도 수준을 일정하게 유지하는 것이 필요할 것으로 판단된다.

  • This study investigated the typical standards of B kind of standard specification related to home and abroad forms design and compared them, and the results can be summarized as follows. In case of domestic standards, regulations on most forms design was described relatively in detail. and in case of CTEA among them, it included detailed contents of load conditions, lifting and subsidence. In case of abroad standards, the design regulations are only simply mentioned, not in detail, in ACI, CEB-FIP and BS, and JCI and JASS were similar to domestic KCI and KASS regulations. As to structural calculation in forms design regulations, most of domestic regulations included detailed matters on structural calculation, among them, CTEA shows the most detailed matters on it. On the other hand, it could be known that in case of abroad standards, most standards do not include matters on structural calculation except ACI, JCI and JASS.

Comparison of Fatigue Provisions in Various Codes and Standards -Part 1: Basic Design S-N Curves of Non-Tubular Steel Members

  • For the fatigue design of offshore structures, it is essential to understand and use the S-N curves specified in various industry standards and codes. This study compared the characteristics of the S-N curves for five major codes. The codes reviewed in this paper were DNV Classification Rules (DNV GL, 2016), ABS Classification Rules (ABS, 2003), British Standards (BSI, 2015), International Welding Association Standards (IIW, 2008), and European Standards (BSI, 2005). Types of stress, such as nominal stress, hot-spot stress, and effective notch stress, were analyzed according to the code. The basic shape of the S-N curve for each code was analyzed. A review of the survival probability of the basic design S-N curve for each code was performed. Finally, the impact on the conservatism of the design was analyzed by comparing the S-N curves of three grades D, E, and F by the five codes. The results presented in this paper are considered to be a good guideline for the fatigue design of offshore structures because the S-N curves of the five most-used codes were analyzed in depth.

철도 BIM의 룰 항목 도출을 위한 설계기준 검토 (A Review on Track Design Standards for Selection of Rule Items for Railway BIM)

  • Railway is compsed in various components, such as subgrade, track bed, sleeper, rail, and overhead line, on a linear space. Therefore, comprehensive work for various design standards and guidelines is required when designing a railway facility. For this reason, much time and effort are required to review the relevant design standards and guidelines. While, automatic legal check system for BIM models has been developed in the architectural engineering, it has not been developed in the railway engineering. This study reviews the korean design standard and the korean code for railway engineering, and suggests some rule items of logical information. Comparing the suggested rule items to the railway BIM library, items of logical information and additional attribute information are obtained. The analysis results of railway design standards and BIM library presented in this study would be utilized for defining rule-set items that is essential for development of the automatic legal check system for railway BIM models.

유니버설 디자인의 원리와 지침에 의한 노인복지시설 기준 분석: 법률 규정을 중심으로 (Analysis of Facility Standard for Elderly Welfare Facility by Universal Design Principle and Guideline: Focusing on Legal Regulations)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the facility standards of the elderly welfare facilities applying the seven principles of the universal design. The facility standards of the elderly welfare facilities were limited to the provisions of the "Enforcement Regulation of the Elderly Welfare Act". There are few legal regulations applying the universal design in the construction of the elderly welfare facilities. The facility standards are set only with the minimum requirements such as securing the safety of the user, securing the space area, functional convenience, and risk prevention. However, the contents of the regulations are limited to the minimum standards for functional convenience and safety required for living. In conclusion, in the elderly welfare facilities, the notion of universal design, which considers not only the elderly, but also service providers, employees, and general visitors, should be considered.
