  • This work presents a virtual prototyping design approach for an area-based image stitching hardware. The virtual hardware obtained from virtual prototyping is equivalent to the conceptual algorithm, yet the conceptual blocks are linked to the actual circuit components including the memory, logic gates, and arithmetic units. Through the proposed method, the overall structure, size, and computation speed of the actual hardware can be estimated in the early design stage. As a result, the optimized virtual hardware facilitates the hardware implementation by eliminating trail design and redundant simulation steps to optimize the hardware performance. In order to verify the feasibility of the proposed method, the virtual hardware of an image stitching platform has been realized, where it required 10,522,368 clock cycles to stitch two $1280{\times}1024$ sized images. Furthermore, with a clock frequency of 250MHz, the estimated computation time of the proposed virtual hardware is 0.877sec, which is 10x faster than the software-based image stitch platform using MATLAB.

  • The compiler is the key of the prototyping framework for the new memory system. These compiler-centric prototyping tools have several components, including compiler, linker, assembler, and standard libraries. It takes a lot of cost and man power to develop it all at zero base. Therefore, developer usually use a development framework to develop these prototyping tools efficiently. These development frameworks should be free of licensing issues when considering the commercialization of development results. Thus, developer should investigate the development framework, which is free from licensing issues and that provides all of the development environment to enable actual execution. There are three representative compiler-centric development frameworks: GCC, Clang (LLVM), and MS visual studio. There are some differences depending on the release version among them. And, there are some limitations to the freeware and commercial use. We chose LLVM here to explain the development of prototyping tools. This information will help accelerate the development of prototyping tools and will help reduce system development costs.

  • Rapid prototyping technology has been widely applied to the design process in the industry. This technology made it easy to generate a prototype which acts like a real product in logic. However, this technology has not been validated sufficiently as a usability test method. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis : There was no significant difference between a real product and its prototype. An experiment was designed to test it statistically. a microwave oven was selected and its prototype was generated using a rapid prototyping tool. Six subjects used the microwave oven and another six subjects used the prototype to perform five scenario tasks. As a result, there was significant difference between the real product and prototype in success rate, task completion time, and number of buttons pressed. The prototype was more difficult to operate than the real product. Therefore we should be careful when we apply rapid prototyping. technology. In the discussions, the causes of the difference were identified and some guidelines were suggested for who wants to apply rapid prototyping tool to the usability test.

  • The functional behavior of a consumer electronic product is nearly all expressed with human-machine interaction (HMI) tasks. Although physical prototyping and computer aided design (CAD) software can show the appearance of the product, they cannot properly reflect its functional behavior. In this paper, we propose an approach to virtual prototyping (VP) that incorporates HMI functional simulation into virtual reality techniques in order to enables users to capture not only the realistic look of a consumer electronic product but also its functional behavior. We adopt state transition methodology to capture the HMI functional behavior of the product into a state transition chart, which is later used to construct a finite state machine (FSM) for the functional simulation of the product. The FSM plays an important role to control the transition between states of the product. We have developed a VP system based on the proposed approach. The system receives input events such as mouse clicks on buttons and switches of the virtual prototype model, and it reacts to the events based on the FSM by activating associated activities. The system provides the realistic visualization of the product and the vivid simulation of its functional behavior using head-mounted displays (HMD) and stereo speakers. It can easily allow users to perform functional evaluation and usability testing. A case study about the virtual prototyping of an MP3 player is given to show the usefulness of the proposed approach.

  • The Direct Metal Prototyping(DMP), one of the rapid prototyping technologies, allows the manufacturing of three-dimensional metallic parts using metal powders directly from the CAD data. Laser power and scanning speed are the most important variables of the process. The objective of this study is to obtain the design data for laser power and scanning speed to bond metal powders effectively using the finite element method. To obtain the design values, a numerical analysis considering two-dimensional heat transfer during the sintering of metal powder layers of the process was performed. The laser beam has been modeled to have directionality in its heat flux distribution, i. e., in the scanning direction a Gaussian beam mode distribution has been assumed and in the thickness direction a square beam mode distribution. The three-dimensional irregular distribution of metal powders of the powder layer is idealized as two-dimensional distribution in which metal powders are located regularly and periodically on the plate. In this study the design values of laser power vs scanning speed have been obtained. Temperature distribution and temperature variation of the powder layers with respect to time have been predicted. The commputed dsign data will be useful in determining the initial conditions of the process.

  • The kinetic façade system is an interactive building envelope which is adaptive to environmental condition by transforming the behaviour of its components. The design process of kinetic façade system calls for a novel approach. It needs to support designers to adopt technologies from multidisciplinary fields such as physical computing and robotics. In this paper, prototyping method is introduced as a useful technique for implementing kinetic façade systems. In order to incorporate prototyping method into architectural design process, two aspects are investigated in digital design studio: (1) The interactions between digital and analogue environments (2) The role of traditional design tools. Furthermore, the role of BIM is investigated by analyzing two aspects.

  • In this work, rapid prototyping and three dimensional finite element analysis are simltaneously applied to design metal forming processes. Rapid prototyping is a new prototyping technology which producess three dimensional part models directly from CAD data and has been extensively applied to various manufacturing processes. There are many types of rapid prototyping systems due to their building principles and materials. In this work, Stereolithography Apparatus (SLA) which is the most widely-used rapid prototyping system is introduced to manufacture the die set. To prepare STL file generally, mesh data which are in describing the die surface in finite element analysis are translated so that rapid prototyping and finite element analysis are effectively connected. The die sets are manufactured using SLA prototypes, and matal forming experiments are carried out using them. Comparing experiments results with analyses, the processes can be predicted and designed successfully.

  • Rapid prototyping becomes widely used in design and manufacturing of mechanical and aerospace engineering. Here a drag valve disk consisted of complicate configuration has designed by CAD, and prototyped by a stereolithography apparatus (SLA) to confirm the design configuration. Also the prototyped valve disk was used for checking if it could be applied for casting from the view point of accuracy, cost, and time. The rapid-prototyped disk by SLA was compared with a high-speed machined disk by MAKINO V55, and it is found that the prototyping of the disk by SLA appears more economical, more accurate and faster than by machining with MAKINO V55.

  • This paper introduces a new approach for saving build time of hybrid rapid prototyping by decomposing a part into minimum number of layers. In the hybrid rapid prototyping, a part of a complicated shape is realized by adding layers of a simpler shape, each of which is obtained by machining a sheet of constant thickness from its top and bottom surfaces. Thus it is desired to decompose a given part into the minimum number of layers while guaranteeing each layer to be fabricated from the given sheets using a 3-axis milling machine. To satisfy these requirements, a concave edge-based algorithm is proposed to decompose a part into layers by considering the tool accessibility, the total number of layers, and the allowable sheet thickness.
