Prediction of structural behavior of PVC sewer manhole (PVC 하수맨홀의 구조적 거동 및 예측)

  • Due to rapid urbanization and industrialization, water supply and sewer line systems are also developed relevantly. Manhole is an essential component structure of the pipeline system. Manhole is a structure constructed to accommodate the direction, dimension, differences in level, and easy of maintenance in the pipeline system. In this paper we present the result of investigations pertaining to the structural behavior of PVC sewer manhole buried underground. In the paper mechanical properties of PVC material are reported. In addition, by the finite element analysis (FEA), we confirmed that a PVC double-wall corrugated pipe manhole, when it is buried underground, is safe for the stress as well as buckling strength if the manhole is constructed within the suggested limit of buried depth.

  • The concrete structures designed and constructed by conventional design concept based on structural performance consideration show sometimes serious durability problem when the structures are exposed to aggressive environment. Because present design system focuses on the structure safety and considers durability indirectly by the concrete mix design and cover depth, the durability of concrete structure cannot be ensured. As the first step to develope the durability design for concrete structure, durability index which represents internal concrete resistance and environment index which represents external environmental exposure are derived quantitatively. In the next step, the durability design system is developed by checking durability limit state with computed two indexes under service life condition by considering of the reliability of structure. Finally, the proposed system is verified with a model problem.

  • Modeling creep of concrete has been one of the most challenging problems in concrete. Over the years, research has proven the significance of creep and its ability to influence structural behavior through loss of prestress, violation of serviceability limit states or stress redistribution. Because of this, interest in modeling and simulation of creep has grown significantly. A research program was planned to investigate the significance of different factors affecting creep of concrete. This research investigation is divided into two folds: first, an in-depth study of the RILEM creep database and development of a homogenous database that can be used for blind computational analysis. Second: developing a probabilistic Bayesian screening method that enables identifying the significance of the different factors affecting creep of concrete. The probabilistic analysis revealed a group of interacting parameters that seem to significantly influence creep of concrete.

Maximum Crack Width Control in Concrete Bridges Affected By Corrosion (부식을 고려한 콘크리트 교량의 최대 균열폭 제어)

  • As one of the serviceability limit states, the prediction and control of crack width in reinforced concrete bridges or PSC bridges are very important for the design of durable structures. However, the current bridge design specifications do not provide quantitative information for the prediction and control of crack width affected by the initiation and propagation of corrosion. Considering life span of concrete bridges, an improved control equation about the crack width affected by time-dependent general corrosion is proposed. The developed corrosion and crack width control models can be used for the design and the maintenance of prestressed and non-prestressed reinforcements by varying time, w/c, cover depth, and geometries of the sections. It can also help the rational criteria for the quantitative management and the prediction of remaining life of concrete structures.

Numerical Analysis on the Development of an Undularbore (Undular Bore의 발생과정에 관한 수치 해석)

  • A bore is a transition between different uniform flows of water. If a long wave of elevation travels in shallow water it steepens and forms a bore. The bore is undular if the change in surface elevation of the wave is less than 0.28 of the original depth of water. This paper describes the growth of an undular bore from a long wave which forms a gentle transition between a uniform flow and still water. A physical account of its development is followed by the results of numerical calculations. Finite-difference approximations are used in the partial differential equations of motion. For undular bores, numerical calculations show that (i) the relationship between relative elevation and relative velocity given by long wave theory is approached for an undular bore, (ii) the amplitude of first crest of an undular bore approaches a finite limit approximately at an exponential rate, and (iii) the distance between the first two crests increases without bound, approximately logarithmically.

  • SDP (Semidefinite Programming), as a sort of “cone-LP”, optimizes a linear function over the intersection of an affine space and a cone that has the origin as its apex. SDP, however, has been developed in the process of searching for better solution methods for NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems. We surveyed the basic theories necessary to understand SDP researches. First, We examined SDP duality, comparing it to LP duality, which is essential for the interior point method, Second, we showed that SDP can be optimized from an interior solution in polynomial time with a desired error limit. finally, we summarized several research papers that showed SDP can improve solution methods for some combinatorial optimization problems, and explained why SDP has become one of the most important research topics in optimization. We tried to integrate SDP theories. relatively diverse and complicated. to survey research papers with our own perspective, and thus to help researcher to pursue their SDP researches in depth.

Tests of concrete slabs reinforced with CFRP prestressed prisms

  • This paper reports the testing of concrete slabs reinforced with CFRP prestressed concrete prisms(PCP) on the flexural behavior. Four concrete slabs were tested, a reference slab reinforced with steel bars, and three slabs reinforced with CFRP prestressed concrete prisms (PCP). All slabs were made with dimensions of 600mm in width, 2200mm in length and 150 in depth. All concrete slabs reinforced with CFRP prestressed concrete prisms(PCP) exhibited CFRP bar rupture failure mode. It was shown that the application of the CFRP prestressed prisms can limit service load deflections and crack width, the increased level of prestress in the CFRP prestressed prism positively affected the maximum crack width. The deflection of concrete slabs reinforced with CFRP prestressed prisms decreased as prestress in the CFRP prestressed prism increased.

Stability of Unsaturated Soil Slopes considering the Effect of Wetting Front Suction Loss

  • This paper describes the rainfall-induced slope failures caused by infiltration due to prolonged rainfall. The emphasis was on quantifying the effect of fine-grained contents which are influencing on the infiltration rate in the wetting front of initially unsaturated slopes during rainfall. Suction tests by tensiometer were performed for five mixture specimens with varying fine-grained contents and then, numerical analyses for the stability of unsaturated slopes are carried out for different relative densities and mixture portions based on the soil water characteristic curves obtained by GCTS pressure plate. It is shown that the fines are highly influenced on wetting front suction of unsaturated soil slopes. Based on the results, it is found that until 15% fine content is the limit showing different wetting front suction, beyond which the wetting band depth do not affect considerably the stability of unsaturated slopes.

  • I-section prestressed concrete(I-PC) beam crack due to low tensile strength, may decrease rigidity and structural performance by excessive deflection. In an effort to this problem, in this research, I-section prestressed dual concrete(I-PDC) beam has been proposed, consisting of normal strength concrete in compression zone, and high performance steel fiber reinforced concrete(HPSFRC) with a bottom flange depth in tensile zone. Crack formation and its propagation are controlled by the HPSFRC in I-PDC beam. The initial cracking and service limit loads are increased along with the load carrying capacity and flexural stiffness.

Effect of Underground Cavity on Bearing Capacity of Strip Footing (지하공동 위에 설치된 기초의 지지력)

  • 본 논문에서는 지하공동 위에 설치된 띠 기초의 지지력에 대하여 upper bound theory를 이용하여 연구하였다. 기초 크기, 공동의 크기 및 위치, 그리고 지반의 물성치의 영향에 관하여 고찰하였으며 10개의 파괴 형상에 대하여 분석을 수행하였다. 각각의 파괴형상은 지반의 물성치 및 기하학적인 형상에 관한 함수로 표현되어 컴퓨터 해석을 통한 최소화를 시행하였다. 최소화를 위한 프로그램은 Boland C++ Builder를 이용하여 작성한 후 PC에서 수행되었다. 10개의 파괴형상 중 최소의 기초 지지력을 작성된 컴퓨터 프로그램을 통하여 구하였고 이를 해당 기초의 극한 지지력으로 추정되었다. 본 연구의 결과를 종합 정리하여 지하공동 위에 위치한 띠 기조의 극한 지지력을 구할 수 있는 간단한 식을 제시하였다.
