  • This study identified the species-specific, frequency-dependent characteristics of broadband acoustic scattering that facilitate classifying fish species using the pulse compression (PC) technique. Controlled acoustic scattering laboratory experiments were conducted with nine commercially important fish species using linear chirp signals (95-220 kHz) over an orientation angle range of ${\pm}45^{\circ}$ in the dorsal plane at approximately $1^{\circ}$ increments. The results suggest that the angular-dependent characteristics of the broadband echoes and the frequency-dependent variability in target strength (TS) were useful for inferring the fish species of interest. The scattering patterns in the compressed pulse output were extremely complex due to morphological differences among fish species, but the x-ray images strongly suggested that spatial separation correlated well with scattering for the head, skeleton, bone, otoliths, and swim bladder within each specimen.

  • The effects of ginseng saponins, gypsophila saponin, sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS), and Triton X-100 on membrane $K^+-dependent$ phosphatase activity which is lipid dependent and represents dephosphorylation step of the complete Na+, $K^+-ATPase$ reaction were investigated in this study to elucidate whether the effects of ginseng saponins are due to the detergent action, using sarcolemma enriched preparation isolated from dog ventricle. $Na^+$, $K^+-ATPase$ and $K^+-dependent$ phosphatase activities of cardiac sarcolemma were about $143\;{\mu}mol$ Pi/mg protein/hr and $34\;{\mu}mol$ p-nitrophenol/mg protein/hr, respectively. While ginseng saponins (triol>total>diol) inhibited $K^+-dependent$ phosphatase activity, gypsophila saponin, and low dose of SDS($0.4\;{\mu}g/{\mu}g$ protein), and Triton X-100 ($0.6\;{\mu}g/{\mu}g$ protein) increased the enzyme activity, indicating disruptive effect of detergents on membrane barriers. The activating effect of low doses of Triton X-100 on membrane $K^+-dependent$ phosphatase appeared at concentration decreasing light scattering. However, the inhibitory effect of ginseng saponin appeared before a decrease in light scattering. These results suggest that low concentrations of ginseng saponins inhibit the membrane $K^+-dependent$ phosphatase by interacting directly with enzyme before membrane disruption.

  • The effect of the wavelength-dependent scattering on the change of the color chromaticity in the lightguide panel of a liquid crystal display is examined. The white light emitted from the white LEDs located at the edge of the lightguide propagates in the lightguide and is scattered by the patterned dots that are placed on the bottom of the lightguide. The scattered lights that are far from the LEDs showed reddish color compared to the bluish color that is scattered from the near area from the LEDs. The color difference was between 0.01 to 0.06 depending on the resin and the thickness of the lightguide.

  • The high-frequency analysis method of back-scattering cross section spectrum of rotating targets is established. The time history of the back-scattering cross section is calculated using a quasi-stationary approach, based on a physical optics and a physical theory of diffraction, combining an adaptive triangular beam method to consider the shadow effect. And the spectra of back-scattering cross section by the Doppler effect are analyzed applying a simple fast Fourier transform method to its time history. The numerical calculation for rotating targets, such as rotating metal plates and underwater propeller, are carried out. The time history appears to be periodic with respect to the number of wings. The backscattering cross section spectrum level and its frequency shift are dependent on the rotating speed, direction, and the shape of the targets.

  • Phonon scattering and impact ionization models have been presented to analyze hot carrier transport in high energy region, using full band model and Fermi's golden rule. We have investigated temperature dependent properties for impact ionization process of Si using realistic energy band structures at 77K and look. The realistic full band model, obtained from the empirical pseudopotential method with local from factors, is used to calculate scattering rate. The accurate calculation of impact ionization rate requires the use of a wavevector- and frequency-dependent dielectric function ξ ( q,$\omega$). The empirical phonon scattering rate P$\sub$ph/, is given by deriving from linear function for P$\sub$ph/ versus D(E) since the phonon scattering rate is linearly depended on density of states D(E). Impact ionization rate p,, is calculated from the first principle's theory. and fitted by modified Keldysh formula having power of above 2.

  • A new method for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of vitro-cultured bacteria on an ordinary fluorescence spectrometer was developed. The viable bacteria reduced 3-(4,5 dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) to produce insoluble particles that displayed intense resonance scattering light. The assay showed a linear relationship between the number of viable bacteria and the intensity of resonance scattering light. Dead bacteria were unable to reduce MTT. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus exposed to flavonoids from Marchantia convoluta showed a flavonoids concentration-dependent inhibition of the ability to reduce MTT. In the assay, less than 12 h was required to attain susceptibility results and fewer bacteria were utilized than in traditional methods. The RLS technique could, in combination with the MTT assay, be a rapid and sensitive measuring method to determine the in vitro activity of new antimicrobials.

  • The electric field-induced modifications of magnetic anisotropy in CoFeB/MgO systems are studied using X-ray resonant magnetic scattering and magneto-optical Kerr effect. Voltage dependent changes of the magnetic anisotropy of -12.7 fJ/Vm and -8.32 fJ/Vm are observed for Ta/CoFeB/MgO and Hf/CoFeB/MgO systems, respectively. This implies that the interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is reduced (enhanced) when electron density is increased (decreased). X-ray resonant magnetic scattering measurements reveal that the small in-plane magnetic component of the remanent state of CoFeB/MgO systems with weak magnetic anisotropy changes depending on the applied voltage leading to modification of the magnetic anisotropy at the CoFeB/MgO interface.

  • In this study, we set a boundary value problem (BVP) consisting of a discrete Sturm-Liouville equation with transmission condition and boundary conditions depending on generalized eigenvalue parameter. Discussing the Jost and scattering solutions of this BVP, we present scattering function and find some properties of this function. Furthermore, we obtain resolvent operator, continuous and discrete spectrum of this problem and we give an valuable asymptotic equation to get the properties of eigenvalues. Finally, we give an example to compare our results with other studies.

  • Scattering fields of two dimensional acoustic waves by a circular cylinder are investigated. The present numerical approach for the acoustic scattering problem has difficulties of numerical robustness, long-time stability and suitability of far-field boundary treatments. The time-dependent periodic acoustic source is used to analyze Interference patterns between incident waves and waves reflected by the cylinder. Characteristic boundary algorithms coupled with 4th order Modified-Flux-Approach ENO(essentially non-oscillatory) schemes are employed in generalized coordinates to examine the effect of the wane frequency on the interference patterns. Non-reflecting boundary conditions, which is crustal for accurate computations of aeroacoustic problems, are used not to contaminate scattering fields by reflected waves at the outer boundary. Computed scattering fields show the circumferential acoustic modes generated by interacting between acoustic sources and scattered waves. At a lower frequency, the wave passes almost straight through the cylinder without Interacting with circular cylinder. Simulation results are presented and compared with the analytic solution. Computed RMS-pressure distribution on the cylinder wall is good agreement with exact solution.
