Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluation the effect of shade on all ceramic restoration based zirconia according to cooling rate on Firing. Methods: 10 specimens applied to the dentin porcelain were made on the zirconia. After 5 specimens of the first group were burned in the furnace, these were put out rapidly. And after 5 specimens of the second group were burned in the furnace, these were put out slowly later 15 min. All specimens were measured $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ using spectrophotometer, there were calculated 10 mean(SD) of descriptive statistics with SPSS program. These data were used for ${\Delta}E^*$ with color difference equation. Independent t tests were performed between 2 groups. Results: $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ of 2 groups was statistically significant respectively (p<0.001), ${\Delta}E^*$ was 4.55 value. Conclusion: This study showed effect of shade on all ceramic restoration based zirconia according to cooling rate on Firing.
Zirconia($ZrO_2$) has attracted much attention in science and technology because of its high refractive index, high melting temperature, hardness, low thermal conductivity and corrosion barrier properties. And it is widely used as the dental restoration material because of its esthetic appearance. In this research, we analyzed the particle size and composition of the imported dental porcelain for zirconia. And the glass frit was produced. To decrease the glass transition temperature and softening temperature of the glass frit, $Li_2O$ was added into it and the effect of $Li_2O$ on the firing temperature was researched. Then the glass which contains leucite crystal with a high coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) was manufactured and it was mixed with the glass frit to control the CTE. The phase composition were analyzed using the X-ray diffraction. The morphologies of the samples were observed by the scanning electron microscope. The 4wt% $Li_2O$-added glass frit has the optimal glass transition temperature and softening temperature. And 6 wt% leucite crystal was mixed with the glass frit to control the CTE. From the experimental results of crystallization, the crystal phase was found only leucite crystal.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to compare the linear sintering behavior of presintered zirconia blocks of various densities. The mechanical properties of the resulting sintered zirconia blocks were then analyzed. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three experimental groups of dental zirconia blocks, with a different presintering density each, were designed in the present study. Kavo $Everest^{(R)}$ ZS blanks (Kavo, Biberach, Germany) were used as a control group. The experimental group blocks were fabricated from commercial yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia powder (KZ-3YF (SD) Type A, KCM. Corporation, Nagoya, Japan). The biaxial flexural strengths, microhardnesses, and microstructures of the sintered blocks were then investigated. The linear sintering shrinkages of blocks were calculated and compared. RESULTS. Despite their different presintered densities, the sintered blocks of the control and experimental groups showed similar mechanical properties. However, the sintered block had different linear sintering shrinkage rate depending on the density of the presintered block. As the density of the presintered block increased, the linear sintering shrinkage decreased. In the experimental blocks, the three sectioned pieces of each block showed the different linear shrinkage depending on the area. The tops of the experimental blocks showed the lowest linear sintering shrinkage, whereas the bottoms of the experimental blocks showed the highest linear sintering shrinkage. CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this study, the density difference of the presintered zirconia block did not affect the mechanical properties of the sintered zirconia block, but affected the linear sintering shrinkage of the zirconia block.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pre-treatment of core and hydrothermal treatment on the bond strength and flexural strength of ceramic veneered zirconia. Methods: 3Y-TZP specimens(KaVo Zr, $25mm{\times}3mm{\times}1mm$)were prepared by five pre-treatment methods and divided into seven groups including control two groups, subsequently the specimens veneered with the E-MAX ceram according to manufacturer's information(total specimen thickness 1.5mm). Two groups from ceramic-zirconia specimens(n=105, n=15 per group)were assigned into two experimental fatigue conditions, namely storage in an autoclave at $134^{\circ}C$ for 5h, thermo-cycling(3,000cycles, between 5 and $55^{\circ}C$, dwell time 45s, transfer time 2s). A flexural strength test was performed in a universal testing machine(crosshead speed: 0.5mm/min). Data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test(${\alpha}$=0.05). Results: The ceramic-zirconia bond strength value for liner application group(LLW, $27.3{\pm}3.8$) were significantly lower than those of the pre-treatment groups($30.72{\pm}5.3$). The ceramic-zirconia bond strength and zirconia flexural strength was not affected by thermo-cycling(p>0.05), whereas it was affected by storage in an autoclave at $134^{\circ}C$ for 5h(p<0.05). Conclusion: The results indicated that the ceramic-zirconia bond strength and zirconia flexural strength was affected by low temperature degradation.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the connector configuration on the fracture load in conventional and translucent zirconia of three-unit fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Six different three-unit FDPs were prepared (n = 6) from three types of zirconia (3Y-TZP (Katana ML®), 4Y-TZP (Katana STML®), and 5Y-TZP (Katana UTML®)) in combination with two connector configurations (4 × 2.25, 3 × 3 mm). The CoCr master models were scanned, and the FDPs were designed and fabricated using CAD-CAM. The FDPs were cemented on the metal model and then loaded with a UTM at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min until failure. Two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test were used for statistical analysis (α = .05). RESULTS. Fracture loads of 3Y-TZP (2740.6 ± 469.2 and 2718.7 ± 339.0 N for size 4 × 2.25 mm and 3 × 3 mm, respectively) were significantly higher than those of 4Y-TZP (1868.3 ± 281.6 and 1663.6 ± 372.7 N, respectively) and 5Y-TZP (1588.0 ± 255.0 and 1559.1 ± 110.0 N, respectively) (P < .05). No significant difference was found between fracture loads of 4Y-TZP and 5Y-TZP (P > .05). The connector configuration within 9 mm2 was found to have no effect on the fracture loads on all three types of zirconia (P > .05). CONCLUSION. Fracture loads of three-unit FDPs were affected by the type of zirconia. The fracture loads of conventional zirconia were higher than those of translucent zirconia. However, it was not affected by the connector configuration when the connector had a cross-sectional area of 9 mm2.

Since the end of the 1990s, zirconia, which has been applied to dental prostheses, has been used in the form of coping or framework. The prostheses made in this way have been successfully used in the anterior teeth because they have no metal components as a structure. But in the posterior teeth, its use was limited due to the fracture or chipping of the veneering porcelain during the function. Later, as a solution to this shortcoming, a monolithic zirconia restoration was proposed in which a strong coping material was used in the form of a complete prosthesis. But, this resulted in some unesthetic results due to the characteristics of zirconia, which has excellent resistance to strong forces but is very white and opaque. However, now, due to technological advances in increasing the translucency of zirconia, it is possible to produce strong and esthetic zirconia restorations not only in the posterior region but also in the anterior region. In this article, the structural characteristics of various types of zirconia materials that have been developed so far, were discussed, and where the zirconia products actually in use belong to was explained.
Purpose: Waste parts of zirconia blocks and powders were remained after CAD/CAM process. In order to make these residual zirconia fit for practical use, zirconia single cores were produced by drain casting process. Methods: Remained zirconia blocks were reduced to powders with zirconia mortar, and screened with 180 mesh sieve. Zirconia slip was prepared from waste parts of zirconia by ball milling. Plaster molds for forming cores by slip casting were also prepared. Formed cores were removed from mold after partial drying. Dried cores were biscuit fired at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 1hour. Biscuit fired cores were treated with tools to control the fitness and thickness. Finished cores were $2^{nd}$ fired at $1,500^{\circ}C$ for 1hour. Microstructure of cross section of core was observed by SEM. Results: When mill pot was filled with 100g of zirconia and alumina mixed powder, 300g of zirconia ball, and 180g of distilled water, the optimum slip for drain casting was obtained. Gypsum plaster for ceramic forming was more suitable then yellow stone plaster for casting process. SEM photograph showed the microstructure of fully dense with uniform grain size of zirconia and well dispersed alumina grains into the zirconia matrix. Conclusion: Zirconia single cores were produced by drain casting process. Drain casting is useful process to make these residual zirconia fit for practical use. Further study will be focused on the preparation of the bridge type cores by casting.

Clinical applications of translucent zirconia as well as traditional zirconia (3 mol% yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal, 3Y-TZP) are increasing. For this reason, studies on factors affecting the optical properties of dental zirconia have been continuously reported. The optical effect of dental zirconia may vary depending on the yttria content, the thickness of the prosthesis, the sintering process, polishing, glazing and cementation in laboratory and clinical procedures. Increasing the yttria concentration can reduce the masking effect. Translucency decreases as the thickness of the restoration increases, but the required thickness may vary depending on the properties of the zirconia block. The high-speed sintering method can shorten the manufacturing time, but in some cases, the translucency of the prosthesis may decrease. In addition, the optical properties can be affected by the surface roughness of zirconia and the polishing process. The use of an appropriate colored cement can help with the masking effect of zirconia and can be useful for color matching for more esthetic results.
PURPOSE. This study aims to clinically compare the fitness and trueness of zirconia crowns fabricated by different combinations of open CAD-CAM systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Total of 40 patients were enrolled in this study, and 9 different zirconia crowns were prepared per patient. Each crown was made through the cross-application of 3 different design software (EZIS VR, 3Shape Dental System, Exocad) with 3 different processing devices (Aegis HM, Trione Z, Motion 2). The marginal gap, absolute marginal discrepancy, internal gap(axial, line angle, occlusal) by a silicone replica technique were measured to compare the fit of the crown. The scanned inner and outer surfaces of the crowns were compared to CAD data using 3D metrology software to evaluate trueness. RESULTS. There were significant differences in the marginal gap, absolute marginal discrepancy, axial and line angle internal gap among the groups (P < .05) in the comparison of fit. There was no statistically significant difference among the groups in terms of occlusal internal gap. The trueness ranged from 36.19 to 43.78 ㎛ but there was no statistically significant difference within the groups (P > .05). CONCLUSION. All 9 groups showed clinically acceptable level of marginal gaps ranging from 74.26 to 112.20 ㎛ in terms of fit comparison. In the comparison of trueness, no significant difference within each group was spotted. Within the limitation of this study, open CAD-CAM systems used in this study can be assembled properly to fabricate zirconia crown.
Purpose: Generally dental technicians clinically decide the sintering temperature of zirconia artificial teeth to match the color of the teeth. However, the sintering temperature influence the microstructure and mechanical strength of ceramic body. In this study, to evaluate the free choice of sintering temperature which leads to color the problems in zirconia false teeth, the variation of microstructure, mechanical strength, and colortone of zirconia ceramics according to the change of sintering temperature was investigated. Methods: Bar type specimens were prepared from commercial zirconia blocks by cutting and polishing into $0.8cm(L){\times}1.0cm(W){\times}4.8cm(H)$. Specimens were fired from 1,400 to $1,700^{\circ}C$ at $50^{\circ}C$ intervals and held for 1hour at highest temperature. Apparent porosity, water absorption, firing shrinkage, bulk density, bend strength, whiteness were tested. Microstructures were observed by SEM. Results: When fired above $1450^{\circ}C$, all specimens showed 0% apparent porosity and water absorption, 20% firing shrinkage, and $6.1g/cm^3$ bulk density regardless of firing temperatures. SEM photomicrographs showed grain growth of zirconia occurred above $1,600^{\circ}C$. Whiteness was also largely changed above this temperature. Maximum bend strength of 1,05MPa was obtained at $1,550^{\circ}C$. Bend strength lowered slightly above this temperature and showed $950{\ss}\acute{A}$ at $1,700^{\circ}C$. Conclusion: In order to fit the colortone of zirconia artificial teeth, arbitrary choice of firing temperature higher than $1,500^{\circ}C$, up to $1,700^{\circ}C$ did not influence the mechanical strength.
