The aim of this study was comparison of effectiveness of surface treatment methods in reducing the oxygen-inhibited layer of a commercially available freshly polymerized, light cured dental sealant($concise^{TM}$, 3M, St Paul, USA). Surface treatment groups were consisted of no treatment(negative control group) and 3 experimental groups according to surface treatment of light-cured sealant. Experimental group I was 10 seconds' exposure to distilled water syringe, group II was 10 seconds' manual application using a cotton pellet wetted with 75% alcohol and group III was 10 seconds' prophylaxis with pumice/water slurry using rubber cup on a slow-speed handpiece. All specimens were immersed in 5ml distilled water and stored at 37c water bath for 10 minutes. All eluates were analyzed by HLPC for identification and quantitive analysis of monomers. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. None of the chromatograms of the tested sealant displayed peaks with the same retention time as that of the standard solution, except for TEGDMA. 2. All surface treatment group had a statistically significant decrease of monomer release in comparison with no treatment group. 3. Removal effects of unreacted monomer in group III was statistically significant in comparison with group I and group II. These results revealed that mechanical method using pumice and rubber cup is the most effective in removing residual monomer and may be valuable to be used effectively in clinic.
This study intended to identify how our children are aware of dental health and motivate them to learn reasonable knowledge about dental health. Furthermore, it also aimed to induce them to change their awareness and behavioral style about dental health, so that they may keep good habits for dental health for their lifetime. Total 1,044 samples were collected from children who were all 12 years old and lived in Seongnam city. During six months (June to December 2002), they were asked to participate in questionnaire survey about consumer behavior, knowledge, attitude, activity and self-diagnosis for dental health. The results of questionnaire survey can be outlined as follows: (1) The results of investigating consumer behavior for dental health showed that 34.5% of total respondents ever visited dental clinics once or more within latest one year, 21.4% ever visited dental clinics for the sake of prevention, 70.6% were instructed in dental health program, 31.7% were treated with the fluorination, 36.9% were treated with dental sealant, and 17.1% were treated with scaling, respectively. (2) For 10 items asking reasonable knowledge about dental health, respondents answered to 5.06 items on average. (3) For 10 items asking reasonable attitude for dental health, respondents answered to 5.41 items on average. (4) For 10 items asking reasonable behavior, respondents answered to 4.53 items. (5) For 10 items asking reasonable self-diagnosis for dental health, respondents answered to 5.65 items.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to provide the basic data for the development of oral health education program and to make schoolchildren practice the right oral health care behaviors. Methods : Data were collected from 259 elementary school students including 134 boys and 125 girls in Busan from November 26 to December 20, 2012. The groups were tooth brushing group and dental clinic group. All statistical analyses were analyzed by frequency analysis and chi-square test using SPSS 18.0 program. Toothbrushing facility group showed higher awareness level of brushing tooth(p=0.011). School dental clinic group showed higher awareness level of fluoride toothpaste(p=0.000). Both school dental clinic group and toothbrushing facility group showed higher awareness level of oral health education(p=0.001). School dental clinic group showed higher awareness level for tooth brushing method after education(p=0.000). Both school dental clinic group and toothbrushing facility group showed higher level of education. Conclusions : School dental clinic group showed higher level for oral health knowledge and toothbushing facility group showed high level for oral health behavior. Both School dental clinic group and toothbrushing facility group showed higher level of oral health education and tooth brushing method after education. Both school dental clinic group and toothbrushing facility group proved to promote oral health. Activation of school toothbrushing facility is very important to change the oral health workforce.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between soft drink consumption and subjective oral symptoms in Korean adolescents. Methods: Data of 65,528 adolescents were derived from the twelfth Korea youth risk behavior web-based survey, which was conducted from 1st June 2016 to 30th June 2016. Sociodemographic factors, dietary habit, and oral health behavior were collected as independent variables. The subjective oral symptoms were used as a dependent variable. The chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were performed to identify the correlation between dental caries and the other variables. Results: A multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that subjective oral symptoms were correlated with sex, age, subjective economic status, soft drink consumption, sweet drink consumption, tooth brushing frequency and dental sealant experience. Conclusions: Since the intake of soft drink adversely effects subjectively perceived oral symptoms in Korean adolescents, oral health education should include information on the pH levels of food and beverages including carbonated drinks, the effects of sugar on the teeth, and precautions to preventing tooth damage.

This study describes the characteristics of patient receiving comprehensive dental treatment under general anesthesia at the pediatric dentistry of Chosun University dental hospital in Gwangju, between August 2004 and March 2008. The conclusion runs as follows : 1. Most patients(64.8%) were young (under 10 years of age) and mean age was 8.6 years. 2. The primary reason(31.1%) why they chose general anesthesia was lack of child's cooperation (normal but unmanageable). Following in order are mental retardation, Autism and cerebral palsy etc. 3. Resin restorations were performed most frequently(87.8%) followed by pulp treatment, preformed crown, extraction and sealant. 4. It takes 3 hours 10 minutes for general anesthesia on the average. The mean treatment time under general anesthesia was 2 hours 52 minutes. 5. 29 children(39.7%) visited again after general anesthesia for recall check.
Objectives: The aim of this study is to analyze the differences in factors related to the incidence of dental caries between children in fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas and compared the DMFT and DMFS scores to confirm the effect of water fluoridation program (WFP) in Geoje and Changwon. Methods: The oral health examination and questionnaire survey were conducted in fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas. The number of surveyed children aged 8, 10, and 12 years in the fluoridated and non-fluoridated area of two cities was 1,524 and 1,383, respectively. Self-recorded questionnaires included self-perception of their own dental health, daily toothbrushing frequency, intake frequency of cariogenic sweet snacks and beverages, experience of gingival bleeding, experience of unmet dental treatment, and use of oral hygiene device except for toothbrush and toothpaste. The prevalence of caries and fissure-sealant status were surveyed. The logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the difference in children's self-rated oral health status between the fluoridated and non-fluoridated area. The mean number of sealed teeth and surfaces, marginal means of the DMFT and DMFS scores adjusted for the difference in the samples' sex distribution, and region were compared between the fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas. Results: In the fluoridated area, the experience rate of unmet dental treatments was higher among children aged 10 years, intake frequency of cariogenic sweet snacks and beverages were higher among the whole sample, and experience rate of professional fluoride application were lower than in the non-fluoridated area. The DMFT score for permanent dentition adjusted for differences in sex, region, and mean number of fissure-sealed teeth in the fluoridated area was significantly lower among whole samples and 8-, 10-, and 12-year-olds alone than in the non-fluoridated area. Conclusions: WFP can alleviate oral health inequality because it is effective in reducing the incidence of caries among children is disadvantaged demographic, socioeconomic, and cultural contexts.
The aim of the study was to analyze the distribution of dental filling materials for carious permanent teeth of school children in a city. The study was designed as time-serial study, using the data of the dental survey for children aged 8-, 10- and 12-year children living in Gimhae city. The samples were selected by stratified clusters sampling. The number of surveyed samples in depth-analysis for types of dental filling materials were 567 in 2009 and 331 in 2013, respectively. They had dental restorations on one or more teeth. The changing pattern of used dental filling materials was analyzed between 2009 and 2013. Statistical analysis was conducted according to variables related to dental filling material type; DMFT and DMFS index, number of fissure sealed teeth and surface and surveyed year. Amalgam filling rate decreased from 27.9% in 2009 to 18.8% in 2013, while filling rate of tooth-colored materials increased from 56.1% in 2009 and 68.9% in 2013. Amalgam filling rate was a negative correlation with filling rate of tooth-colored materials or gold and number of fissure sealed teeth and a positive correlation with DMFT index. Filling rate of tooth-colored materials was a negative correlation with filling rate of amalgam or gold and DMFT index and a positive correlation with number of fissure sealed teeth. The light-curing composite resin should be included in the reimbursement range of National Health Insurance to solve an inequity of dental health care services.

Amalgam, though a widely used dental material, does not bond to the tooth substrate Therefore, retentive preparation of the cavity is necessary. Such amalgam restorations, until corrosion products form and plug the margin, will show significant marginal leakage. Unless this is prevented early on, saliva and bacteria may enter the cavity causing postoperative hypersensitivity, dissolution and collapse of the restoration, discoloration of the margin and secondary caries, leading to shortened life-span of the restoration and pulpal pathosis. Recently, a method of restoration has been introduced whereby tooth material can be preserved, cavity margin can be sealed and preventive treatment of pit and fissure can be administered while retaining all the advantages of conventional amalgam restorations. Such sealed amalgams involve removing the carious lesion without extending the cavity for prevention and using pit and fissure sealants to seal cavity margins and pit and fissures to reduce microleakage. In this study, finishing of the amalgam and sealant application were performed after different intervals following of amalgam restoration to compare the microleakage of sealed and conventional amalgam restorations. Thirty bicuspids were prepared with Class V cavity preparations on the buccal and lingual surfaces. After amalgam placement, they were divided into the following groups and treated accordingly. Group 1 : Polishing after 24 hours Group 2 : Immediate sealant application without polishing Group 3 : No polishing, but sealant applied after thermocycling 500 times After treatment, the samples were thermocycled 500 times between $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ with a dwell time of 30 seconds. After thermocycling, the samples were dipped into 1% methylene blue kept in a $37^{\circ}C$ incubator at 100% humidity for 24 hours. The teeth were then embedded in resin and cut bucco-lingually along the tooth axis and observed with a stereomicroscope to determine the degree of microleakage, The following results were obtained : 1. Group 2 showed the least microleakeage, while group 1 showed the greatest. 2. Group 1 showed significantly greater microleakage compared to group 2 (p<0.05). However, no significant differences were found between group 1 and 3(p>0.05). No significant differences in microleakage were also found between cup 2 and 3(p<0.05).
It has been suggested in research results thai dental hygienists have high risk of carpal tunnel syndrome, mainly caused by the repeated motion of extensor and flexor or the use of vibration tools, compared to other occupations. To find out the situation of the carpal tunnel syndrome of dental hygienists, who are exposed to work-related musculoskeletal disorders, this study used 132 questionnaires given on May 22, 2004, the period of continuing education of the first half year in the Gwangju Jeonnam area, and obtained the following results. 1. Subjects worked at a dental ciinic(32.6%), a hospital(31.8%), and a public health center(35.6%). Age by work was under 24 in a clinic(17.4%) and a hospital(15.9%), and over 30 in a public health center(35.6%). 2. In practice conducted over one time a day, a scaling accounted for 90.7% in a doctor's office; 595% in a hospital; and 3.0% in a public health center, suggesting significant difference(p<0.01). Pit and fissure sealant accounted for 53.5% in a clinic; 53.2% in a hospital; and 95% in a public health center, also suggesting significant difference(p0.01). 3. Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome appeared in a wrist(12.1%), a right hand(14.4%), and a left hand(5.3%). 4. In case of temporary crown practice, symptoms appeared in a wrist(22.0%), a right hand(14.0%), and a left hand(4.0%), suggesting significant difference(p<0.01). The above results showed that 12.1% of dental hygienists was exposed to carpal tunnel syndrome. Thus, it is considered very important that dental hygienists should be given education of the danger of continuous work in certain motions and prevention education of improving repeated position, and make efforts to reinforce self-control ability.
Objective : This study came to be carried out in order to develop oral health education program for maintaining adolescents' oral health and to be helpful for qualitative improvement in prevention program by surveying the awareness and behavior on preventive method of dental caries in adolescents. Method : The collected materials of totally 1,100 people who responded were carried out frequency analysis by using SPSS 12.0(Statistical Package for the Social Science). Results : 1. As for the results of awareness on fluoride effect and sealant effect, the students with response to 'effect of preventing decayed tooth' were indicated to be the highest. It was indicated to be the highest in girls as for gender and in the 2nd grade as for school year. (p<0.05). 2. As for the results of being created when eating sweet food and carbonated drink, the students with response as saying that 'a decayed tooth occurs well' were indicated to be the highest. 4. As for the results on the aim of visiting dental clinic, the students with response as saying of 'visiting for having treatment' when tooth is painful were indicated to be the highest. Conclusion : Synthesizing this study, the students' awareness on preventive method of dental caries was high. But the practice on regular check-up or diet was indicated to be low. Through oral health education, the adolescents should be not only delivered information or knowledge, but also changed habit and behavior.
